vaccination

Sequim has been in the news, local, state and national for getting shots done. Ya, not the easiest in some ways but at least, getting people shot, car by car. Long lines, long waits but I works. I got mine, after missing getting in line at the right times, by hours. (Go to get in line at 0930 - shots started at 0900 - and I was somewhere a few hundred cars past the last one in line that was going to get vaccinated. So. . . I did like many others, I got in line at 10PM Friday night, and yes, you had to stay in/with your car. About 0800 they started passing out paper work, and the line started moving from the staging area to the vaccination zone, a half mile drive into the park, and the waiting was nearly over. I got mine!!! at 0905, and my appointment for the second shot is on Feb 13, and maybe not have to wait all night in the car. . . .

One of the traffic control volunteers I talked with said we had 60, 70, 80 and 90 year old's that were spending all night in their cars -- first time since they were teen agers at the drive-in movies   8)

The good news is that we can make appointments for the second shot. Don't know how that will work, that website opens tomorrow. Will see how it goes. Really looking forward to getting that #2 Shot, and hoping that there are a huge majority of folks across the country that do the same.

I've not read through this thread, so apologies if I'm repeating information. Vaccination in Seattle via UWMC continues to be available but not intuitive to access. Go through E-Care and proceed to "appointments" and make an appointment. Following the COVID vaccine prompts leads you into a loop of frustration. Kaiser has issued temporary Kaiser ID's which allow eligible folks a chance to schedule vaccinations. Some pharmacies (incl. QFC/Kroger) are beginning to schedule via their websites. A kind service is to advocate and provide transportation for your elderly friends, family, and neighbors, who are at a distinct disadvantage.

My strong suggestion is to select an unappealing time slot when scheduling. The popular daytime slots fill very fast, even while you are signing up. (My MIL got hers last Saturday at 6AM, I got my first one at 10PM on a Saturday, but we got them). Also, less desirable locations are a more sure bet.

In summary: don't wait for the government to come to your rescue here. You'll need to advocate for yourself and your loved ones.

Be safe out there!!

Have a date to set my appointment for Shot #2 coming up soon. (2/13 for the shot date, now just need to narrow down the time -- but if I have to, I will spend another night in the car. Cheap price to pay for staying alive. Even better if/when everyone gets theirs.

I see the store down the road has that Modelo vaccine on sale for $19.50 for a 24 pack. I think I'll stick with that treatment until the other vaccine is more available.
Last January when I was enjoying chemo and radiation they couldn't figure out why I was running 105 temp and every joint in my body was ringing up a 9.5 on the Kaiser 1-10 pain scale, my ENT Doc now thinks it could have been the virus. I figure if that experience didn't kill me I'm not going to worry and hurry for a vaccination.
I do think it is important to get vaccinated but I don't understand the panicked rush

Ken: sure you didn’t have a neutropenic fever? Very common condition for CA patients 2/2 strong chemo.

Best wishes for continued recovery!!

thanks I'm doing most excellent now.. I don't know what the issue was but I do know the Docs threw about every test at me and they couldn't figure it out. My chemo schedule consisted of a lower dose over a longer period of time....things did go totally sideways on my last treatment though. I had three nurses a Pharmacist and a doctor frantically hovering around me and then they fired me from chemo, last winter pretty much sucked...2020 pretty much sucked

Just a comment, there have been a number of patients who may well have had the COVID 19, and were negative for the antibody tests--at least initially. Not sure what this is going to mean for immunity down the line...

Even though I had classic symptoms last March, we elected to get the vaccination.

Why vaccination "now"--less chance of dying or having prolonged morbidity from the COVID 19 infection...

We plan on social distancing and masking (with the N95 Filti Masks) for at least a year. It may become the normal indoors in our social group. We are mostly elderly (over 80) and have comorbidities.

Got my first on the 23rd. Had the chance for an appointment at Kaiser in Renton and took it. That's only a 20 minute drive for me. Site was very well organized. I had a 1:10 pm time, got there at 12:30 and walked right in to about 10 stations. Doc asked me a few questions. I had to wait 15 minutes but was still was out before 1 o'clock.

The only hitch came when the Doc put on the little bandage. He looked closer, chuckled, and told me that he had missed the spot. Darn needles are so thin that there isn't a trace left. Hope the second (2/13) goes as smoothly.

What, no lollypop? No wonder there is some hesitancy.

I got my first, via VA, Wednesday. They were well organized, no hassle. Even gave me a black mask. I think I could detect a little soreness in the arm a day later, but it was very minimal.

Things can change fast. We were up early to go to City Hall, where they were issuing vouchers for a vaccination the next day. When we got there, we saw a crowd of people waiting at the front door, no distancing, and some without masks. We looked at each other and said, "Forget this."

We later found out that they were NOT issuing vouchers just for showing up - so all those people put themselves at risk needlessly. Instead, they were giving information for how to go on-line to apply for a voucher. We did that and surprisingly got a call about 4:00 in the afternoon... "If you can be at City Hall before 5:00, you can pick up vouchers for each of you - they will be doing a large vaccination tomorrow at Los Fresnos (a town about 30 minutes from us), if you can drive there.

Absolutely.

This was their first shot at a mass vaccination, and we were waiting in our car (in line and parked at the fairgrounds) for almost 6 hours. We brought muffins, fruit, and plenty of water, so no problem there. Some skanky porta-potties were available. When the row of cars we were in (much like being in like for the Washington State Ferry) got the signal to move, it all happened fast: 6 bays in the fire station, each bay three cars deep, and a medical team giving the shots at each station. They had a two person team who came to each side of the car and we were done in about a minute, including giving them our vouches and paperwork.

The worst part of it, besides the wait, was not knowing if we would actually get the vaccines (people had been turned away in smaller vaccination events when they ran out). We later heard that they had 6,000 doses, had handed out that same number of vouchers, and they vaccinated 750 people in the hour we received ours.

We did not have to wait in the car overnight like some had done. The line to get into the fairgrounds was 2.4 miles long when we got there. Very little information was disseminated ahead of time. I have no doubt that many people 65+ did not know that the only way to get a voucher was to register on-line.

I'm sure they will get better at this with time. It was a certain sense of relief to get the shot, knowing that we will still be masking up, distancing, avoiding crowds, and thoroughly washing hands for months to come. The hope is the vaccine may prevent getting the virus, and less chance of dying from it if you do get it.

20 hours before getting the needle in our arms, we had no idea if or when we might be able to get the vaccination. We had registered with several entities, this was the first to pan out.

We go back in 4 weeks (Moderna vaccine) for the second shot... at least we'll know what to expect at that point.

The numbers in this part of the state have been awful. So many people that can't seem to wear a mask or understand what social distancing means. The culture is for big family gatherings, and it is killing people.

I am sure the experience will be different, location dependent. While there was a lot of time wasted, I would call this particular situation a good start.

I'm so glad you're all doing everything to get the vaccine despite some difficulties.

I'm hoping that in the future, I don't have to put husband and wife in the same room so that they will not be alone while waiting to take their last breath. Hoping I don't have to do zoom calls so families can see their love ones and say their goodbyes since no visitors are allowed. Hoping not to see multiple family members in ICU all trying to survive. Hoping not have to search the proper way of informing family member/s on the phone that your dad passed away... and by the way, your mom is also not doing well and might not make it in the next 24 hours.

Be safe and protect yourselves at all times.

On Monday At 9 a.m. the Fox Cities COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic (FCCVC)
scheduling system went live, and I managed to get vaccination tickets for
my wife and I. On Tuesday we got an email saying they had a glitch and
our tickets weren't valid. The first 1000 got valid tickets by 9:15, and even
though I'd been on their site at 9:01, my wife and I were among the 4,700
people who got invalid tickets.

With fights between a democratic governor and a republican congress, and
the indifference of big money health care providers it's no wonder only two
states have a worse record than Wisconsin for covid-19 vaccine
administration.

Where I live in CA it is a sh*&t show. Unless you are "in the know". :)

Tx actually seems to be doing very well, surprisingly.

Not sure what is going on with WI. Odd they are so low...

This does not surprise me at all, as a recovering Texan. The general media portrayal of Texas is usually one reflecting extreme conservativism, backwards ways of living, and the same general “dumb country people” image usually projected on the rest of the rural West gets painted across that entire state. That exists there. But alongside it is entire cities run on green energy, world class opera/museums/and universities, a thriving urban middle class, and a sense of pride in place that makes fascist dictators green with envy. I wont go into their politicians. That would violate the P-word policies and puncture the pervasive porticos of politeness so poignantly prepared as per cbrat protocols. I will do no such thing.

Happy to see so many getting vaccinated. Government runaround is always frustrating, but as a man told me recently “this is the biggest single event to occur to the human species in almost a generation.” It’s easy to lose sight of the fact that this is not an American problem, or a North American problem (howdy neighbors), but a world and species problem. We might drop the ball a few times on the way to the goal line, but we seem to be picking it up and moving forward.

After getting lucky and scoring an appointment for Merry, we arrived at the Forum SuperPod site two hours early, expecting long lines. To our pleasant surprise, it was well organized and our appointment time didn't matter. We pulled into the parking lot at 11:30 and Merry received her shot at 11:50 while we sat in the car.

I wish the organizers at the Forum were in charge instead of politicians and county health departments.

Partisan politics is starting to creep into this thread, pretty sad. Hope we can exert self-control. I did some research on the various states' vaccine rollout numbers, and discovered the results to be mixed between red and blue states, with no clear ideological correlates of effectiveness. Success and failure on both sides of the aisle.

Maybe this isn't a political issue so much as a public health and logistical issue?

I'm playing Pollyana this year, buying into the notion of us all cooperating for the common good. Please continue to share vaccine availability information, and do help your elderly friends/family/neighbors to gain access.

We're all in this together!!

The first several days scheduling and finding appointments mid January was chaos. At the recommendation of both Trump and Biden the age was reduced from 75 to 70 to 65 for group priority 1B(?, may differ by state). This really overwhelmed most medical groups, their web sites, and voice mail. Availability was seeing openings for most old people in late February or even late March. The computer illiterati were screwed!

A drastic improvement here in Washington State occurred by the middle of last week. The administrative enterprise (read headache) of scheduling 300+ million people is and needs to be huge. First appointments made, confirm eligibility. Records need to be pulled up, documentation, and scheduling second injection needs to be done at the time of first injection.

Washington State is now organizing injections for school personnel over age 50. They are not yet eligible, but they want people to be able to do this easily and without hassle. Kaiser Permanente has been appointed to take the lead.

Expect fairly rapid improvements in the whole process. Unused vaccines are becoming a thing of the past. I don't think the feds are quite ready to let states know more than a week or so, if that, when deliveries will be made. It is all complicated.

I think that the vaccine that needs deep cold storage is a big complicating factor. There are limited numbers of freezers and their distribution is uneven.

There are stories of freezers breaking down and they have to rush to give the vaccine to basically passersby so it won't be wasted. Not only is the vaccine consumed maybe where it wasn't intended, but the rush to distribute it probably screws up the record keeping system.
