The new iPad (HD! 4G!)

The new iPad... Apple unveiled the 3rd generation of it's iPad today, with sales supposed to start on March 16th. That's pretty fast for a new machine from intro to hitting the stores. While everyone is talking about the HD resolution of the screen, in my take, the really big news is it will be a 4G machine. That will be the first Apple device to take advantage of the 4G speeds... I'm assuming another iPhone with 4G won't be too far behind (pure speculation).

We're still running with a first gen iPad and I don't see any big reason to get the newest, bestest, since we connect with ours via a 4G Droid and wifi. But, if you are wanting to show off photos or videos, that new screen resolution is going to be eye-popping, I would imagine.

Smart on Apple's part to not make their iPad2 "obsolete" while they sell off their remaining stock. I would guess that a price reduction on the iPad2 is also coming.

If you like your current iPad as chartplotter, this should only be crisper and better... and the opportunity to burn through data with 4G! Nice.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

How do you like the iPad for charting?

sorry if you already posted it as I dont read all of the CB postings

Hi Brent,

There are several threads in the archives regarding the iPad as a chartplotter, and most reviews are very favorable. We've had one since early on (haven't felt the need for the latest "shnizel", and are definitely in the "Like" camp.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

On edit: here's a link to our blog from a post over a year and a half ago. This particular page is still getting 30-40 hits a day. Our opinion of the iPad hasn't changed any since this review...

4 times the screen resolution of the Ipad 2. Quad core processor, New camera, HD Video, Iphoto. More pixels on the screen than a big screen tv. Mine a 64 gig and it's full. So where is the 128 gig version? I will probably get a new for more capacity. They are a handy gadget.

With the 4G and high resolution camera it appears that streaming vedio and picturestreaming activity can use a standard monthly AT&T data plan in 10 minutes and the higher Verizon data plan in 20 minutes. This certainly is past my recreation budget and will be interesting to see what they do with data plans.

I'm still on 3G and i can burn through 5GBs without even trying. Tethering & streaming.

No doubt the new iPad will be magnificent and I'm happy that folks are rapidly moving to 4G.

Hopefully, as time goes by, it will relieve some of the demand on 3G networks.

One thing's for sure, the proliferation of these data-intensive devices are going to tax the networks in ways we haven't seen yet.

One has to be aware of how and how much data you're consuming. I have a true unlimited plan (for now), due to being grandfathered in. Even so, our 1st gen iPad has never been connected directly to AT&T (the only carrier available for the iPad in 2010) - it has always been used with wifi... generally our own hotspot. The technology is available for those who choose to use it.

I was recently asked about downloading movies with our data connection... never tried it; doesn't seem like a reasonable use for us. That doesn't mean it's a bad usage for those who have a DSL line at home; just not for those of us who have cut all the land lines.

If you have a smaller data plan, does that mean you would be happier with a device that is slower to download? Frankly, I find slow data download to be frustrating.

Each person has to decide what works for their use - it's nice to have options; and nice if those options are as fast when you're out and about as compared to in your home or office.

I haven't been a big fan of PC based nav software because it has always felt clunky to me. I like the idea (and execution) of all the nav charts on a couple DVDs to replace paper. The iPad in the boat just works for us... as a back-up chartplotter and so much more.

That doesn't mean that those who don't use one are getting any less of an on-the-water experience. Faster, better resolution, faster data - what's not to like?

Best wishes,
Jim

With the lo res eyes that many of us have, the high res screen won't present much of an improvement. That having been said, we do not have an IPad at present and may have to get one, just to have one. Can't get 4G here at our house and 3G even is quite flaky! Ah, the boonies... OTOH, we have geese in our nest box, eagles overhead, ducks in the water and boats!!

Good choice on the priorities, Charlie! At our little house at the edge of the United States, we have had moderately crappy phone and data connectivity. And then, about mid-November... poof! We had 4G and a real phone signal. Verizon really is expanding their network, with over 200 million people in 4G coverage areas (AT&T has about 75 million, by comparison).

I didn't post this originally because I'm a "fan-bois" (a term some some use to describe those who brag on and on about their latest tech purchase, and generally used for those who like Apple products), but because there seems to be a LOT of interest in using the iPad on the boat.

I won't be one of those standing in line to get one, since our old 1st gen iPad still does what we need. BUT, if I didn't already have one, AND intended to use the device to connect to a data plan, this new model would be a great way to get into it for some folks.

Just mentioning it for discussion.

Data usage is a very valid consideration. For the past 6+ years, we have rarely used more than 5 gig in a month. Before getting 4G, I rarely looked at links when folks would post "check out this video"... I just knew it was going to be a lot of "start and stop" with a 3G connection. A whole different experience with 4G. I did make a nice upgrade this past month; not with any tech device, but with a new guitar. I watched a bunch of videos while in "search mode" and used nearly 10 gig of data. Nice to have an unlimited plan, and we haven't seen any of the "throttling" that is often discussed. Probably won't go that high again, 'cause I spend more time playing than researching. 8)

Best wishes,
Jim

This looks like a nice upgrade. Not enough for me to ditch my iPad 2, but for anyone on the fence about getting an iPad now is a great time.

I find the mobile data plans right now quite frustrating. I have an "unlimited" AT&T plan that has carried over since the original iPhone, but AT&T recently announced that unlimited plans are really limited to 3gb a month. I was out of town for three days last week with no wifi access, and even without streaming music or videos I still used more than 500mb of data. At that pace I'd use 5gb a month, for which I'd have to pay AT&T an extra $20. Luckily I have wifi most of the time...

What I'd really like to see is a data plan that allows you to buy x number of GB and use them on any device you'd like. I effectively do this now by tethering my jailbroken iPhone, but it'd be nice if it was more seamless. If I pay for 3gb of data, shouldn't I get to choose which devices I use that data on?

My daughter has unlimited data plan from Verizon and they throttle the speed when over the cap ...... just asked them.....
Yes Sir. we throttle but data is still unlimited

It is like going back to dial up connection

My hesitation all along is the size of the screen. I much prefer a 7 inch, as offered with the Galaxy or Kindle Fire.

From Verizon's web site:
"Mobile Hot Spot Support For The New iPad.
Verizon is the only carrier in the U.S. that allows the new iPad Wi-Fi + 4G to act as a personal mobile hotspot. This means you can share your Verizon 4G LTE network with up to 5 Wi-Fi enabled devices (such as a computer, gaming device or camera). And the best part? This personal hotspot is available at no extra charge and simply uses your data allowance."

A Good reason for you sell that old iPad and buy the new

I can trade up for $375 difference and drop my monthly by $35. Of course I will be limited to 5GB, but I can be ok with that I think.
