The new iPad (HD! 4G!)

Don't be too quick to jump on board to purchase one just yet because there are reports of significant overheating on the lower left quadrant of the unit in portrait position. In some cases people are reporting that the unit shuts down and they get an error message. People are using laser infrared devices like we use to measure hub temp to document the apparent overheating. This has yet to be confirmed but it is a bit of a concern and Apple has yet to comment.

We have an I-pad2 3G and are running the Navionics and TomTom programs on it and we are very happy with especially the Navionics. Cost in Canada for both programs was almost $100 not bad for a marine and land GPS. I see no need to upgrade until they put more memory and maybe an extra USB port into the next I-Pad.

Hello everybody.

Finally considering actually pulling the trigger and acquiring an iPad. Looking at the Apple website and their blurbs on the new iPad I see it refers to the two available models as "Wi-Fi" and "Wi-Fi + Cellular" - - they are NOT calling it either 3G or 4G. From previous C-Brats posts I always see folks saying make sure you buy the '3G' model..... I assume the "Wi-Fi + Cellular" is the equivalent but no longer called 3G since the 4G support is also there.... true?

Looking further at their Tech Specs 'Location' Data it states the "Wi-Fi + Cellular" model has the following:

Wi-Fi
Digital compass
Assisted GPS
Cellular

The term 'Assisted GPS' concerns me. I assume this is the model I would require to optimize usage of the various available navigation apps but I wanted to check w/ the experts out there since the 'assisted' term leaves me wondering.

The amount of memory also leaves me wondering. Is it worth paying for the max 64 GB model? What aspect of iPad usage seems to drive memory usage for those of you already using an iPad? Do most of you consuming large chunks of memory download movies or are you storing tons of photos or what else are you doing that would push one to go for the max memory available?

Also for those of you that follow Apple closely is their any seemingly likelihood of the rumored "Apple iPad Mini" coming out anytime soon? I assume such a device would also be offered in 3G/4G if it came out too.

Thanks for any insights you can provide to address these issues.

Take care,

Dan,

Having made the mistake of buying a wi-fi only IPad2 and then having to spend another $100 to get a stand alone gps receiver; I strongly suggest you buy the "wi-fi plus cellular". You do not have to sign up to a cellular provider to get gps availability on your boat.

The "wi-fi + cellular" means it has the 3G/4G. This model has a built in GPS.

The "wi-fi" only does not have the built in GPS.

To my mind the one for a boater to buy is the "wi-fi + cellular." They make external GPS's, but I think the only reason to get one of those is that you already have an iPad that is "wi-fi" only and don't want to buy another one (so have to retrofit with an external unit in order to get the GPS).

From what I understand this just means that *if* you have cell service available, the GPS might work even faster. The main thing is that the "wi-fi + cellular" model DOES have a perfectly good GPS even when it is not being "assisted." The "wi-fi" (only) model does not have a GPS.

Seems like the rumors are pointing to an October release for a new iPad/iPad mini. Not sure if the mini will have 3G/4G (but I hope so). It does seem like all the iPads will gain a new/different connector (called "lightning," and smaller/newer than the long-standard 30-pin; also may have additional functionality). I'm strongly considering an iPad (not sure if full sized or mini) and so I'm waiting for the new connector, since it's right around the corner, and also I want to see the smaller form factor before deciding. I'll definitely be getting "wi-fi + cellular" if I get one at all, although I may not actually hook it up via the phone company (you can still enjoy the benefits of the real GPS "offline" when you buy the "wi-fi + cellular" model).

Sunbeam :hot

PS: Take it away, JamesTXSD.... :wink

Thanks Barry, Sunbeam, and - the quick to respond to cue ("Take it away...") - Jim.

Appreciate the many insights and the tip on the likely timing for the upcoming iPad mini release. Perhaps I will wait a month or so too and see what's announced.

P.S. Barry.... I finally got my USCGA Crew qualification.

Tanks again gents,
