I have always felt it a little frustrating (and I have been a C-Brat on this site for 3 plus years) that fellow Brats submit a message and do not enclose their name! Your 'handle' means nothing to me. But signing off as Fred, Joe, Jane, or whatever, adds to the family connection I feel here. Is it just me, or do others feel that a certain connection is missing?

Martin.

I kind of agree. I like names too. And if it is only in the signature block, I think that only shows the first time on a page. Yes it takes some extra time but it does help to follow the poster without having to slide back and forth much of the time.

It only takes a minute, and maybe part of "just be nice" concept. JMHO.

I use my initials. D.D. My name is David Dwight Deem. The Dwight came from Dwight Eisenhower who was the 34th president and a famous WWII general. I was born in 1948 a war baby/baby boomer sort of I guess. I would believe my father was quite enamored with Ike as a man. My mother switched my name to David Dwight Deem as she was against having my first name as Dwight. I sometimes use D3. I'm the third from the oldest and the oldest boy of 11 children eight girls three boys. Enough about me. Did anyone really want to know this much about me? I hope not.
I see no reason for people sign off using their names. Some people address me as Will or worse which I think is fine. Many people do not list there home town or real area they have residence. That in opinion is what makes this site great. Comes as you are and we will call you what you request. Where are you from? Don't really need that either. Since it really does not matter to me who knows my name or where I'm from since I not hiding from anyone. I just use D.D. because it's easy.
D.D.

I personally like real names, and I always use mine in internet forums (or is the plural "fora"?). On another forum I check regularly (The Ocarina Network) almost nobody except me and one or two others use real names. If I want to know somebody's name, I PM them and ask. If they tell me, fine. If not, fine - their choice! They get addressed as whatever their user name is, however odd that may be! Most people respond with their name.

I use my name in most forums but here I am start craft tom. I used that because as my first forum I was told that is what you do on a forum. It does not matter to me how you ID your self. Just do not get offended if I use your log on name when we meet, no matter how many times I meet you. :smiled

Patty still remembers when Tom called her in the hospital when she had kidney failure. He said "Hi, Patty, this is Tom." "Excuse me, who?" "Tom Elliott" "I'm sorry, do I know you?" "STARCRAFT TOM!" The light went on and the conversation continued!

Why show your name? Cyberspace blogs certainly are not personal. If you take
online information personally, you could be opening yourself up to trouble.

Your name isn't that personal either. You didn't even choose it. Your parents
did. And they probably didn't even tell you why they gave it to you. Maybe
your name was given to you because it was someone your parents knew or
liked, like "Uncle Tim" who died 27 years ago and they want to remember him
when they say his name they gave to you.

And, if you call someone by the wrong name, you can hurt their feelings. I've
had a lot of luck with, "Aye you....".

Of course, if you've had your name legally changed, then you have a name you
probably like and that means something. It also means you didn't like the
name you had changed.

For example, apparently your name is Martin. Where did that come from and
does it describe you as a person? Martin happens to mean "from Mars" - the
God of War - so are you "warlike"? I know this because my name happens to
be Martin too. I didn't get a middle name. I got the suffix III. Yup. I'm
Martin III with the family name in between. Maybe I'm the third Martin in
the family. Maybe they had me after their third try. It doesn't matter to me.

But maybe you know that and want to counter the idea of your name with your
boat's name, "Nomad". I get it! The driver is mad (angry, warlike) but not the
boat. Very good. I like balance.

I don't read blogs to learn names. I read blogs for the blog content, not the
name that might follow.

No, it doesn't make sense. So, I'll just sign off with "Aye".

Aye.

The greatest thing about the C-Brats is the personal connections we make. Personal connections require communications, and communications are greatly facilitate by knowing the name of the person you are communicating with. If you do not want anybody to know who you are, where you are, what you like and don't like, where you plan to cruise and so forth, what the heck are you doing here in the first place? In fact the greatest thing about being a C-Brat is all the events we have partipated in over the years and putting faces to names and boat names!

Though I agree that knowing a person's real name can give a greater sense of connection, I don't think making someone feel unwelcomed if they choose not is a very good idea.

I am on quite a few forums, moderator of a few, and there are some users that for what ever reason choose to stay anonymous to a greater degree, usually they have their reasons and I respect that.

We included our names to the left next to our vessel name. We also have an image of us as the first image in our photo album.

Vessel Name: Grace - Crew Kevin & Laura

Well, I've made comments on this topic before (just like everything else around here!), but here goes.

I do enjoy real names much more than handles, avatars, etc. It makes our friends here seem much more real to me, at least, and this extended family a little closer.

I also enjoy knowing something more about each of our members, such as where you live, your occupation (or former occupation), your interests, what you and your family look like, your boat and usual cruising grounds, your pets, and anything else you're willing to share.

It's amazing how different folks here are in those regards. Some show just about everything possible about themselves, and others nothing more than boat projects. Some, of course, don't even have albums, and some don't show anything but the bare minimum in their profile.

But that's there choice, of course, if they want to be anonymous, and I'll just have to assume they're in some sort of Witness Protection Program for the time being, at least..................!!!

No offense intended, JMHO!

That's a little scary.

I see two ways of looking at C brats:
A texhnical forum about these great boats.
An extended family, of folks who love these boats.

As for using your real name on the internet: For those who seem to be paranoid about this--Most give enough clues in their profile and in a few posts to give clues, and then a little search on google, will give their name, what property they own, their profession, what clubs they belong to and even when they may be gone from their home for a peroid of time......The list goes on.

I enjpy the technical aspects, but I can get that on The Hull Truth, Trawlers, Cruising, or even Saling Arnarchy...

It is the extended family which makes C Brats special.

As one visitor to our home voiced a nunumber of years ago: "Dad, you are goint to stay overnight in some dude's house, you met on the internet? How do you know he is not the chainsaw killer?"

My handle or user name is jennykatz which is what I called my boat 230 Seaswirl after my daughter Jennifer Kathryn . This is something I always will remember. I usually sign off with Jim

You two turned out to be OK. 8)

A name is nothing more than a label given you by someone else (see previous
post). To know "you" is to first know who "you" are not.
The real "you'' is not your name. "Your first name" isn't really yours since many
people are likely to have the same one. This may even apply to your complete name.
"You" are not what you look like. This changes dramatically over time.
"You" are not what your occupation is or what it used to be. It is temporary.
"You" are not what you have (sum of all your possessions including a CD,
the size and location of your home, even your favorite truck).
"You" are not who others may think you are or even who you think you are.
"You" are not your story.
All the above are nothing more than what ego says you are that does nothing to
bring us together; it divides us.
"You" simply just are*.

You *are an individual unique beautiful complex wonderous intelligent and
temporary creation of the universe, probably insignificant.

IMHO

Aye.

Grandma used to say, "We all are either Human Beings having some kind of
spiritual experience or Spiritual Beings having a human experience."
