A name is nothing more than a label given you by someone else (see previous
post). To know "you" is to first know who "you" are not.
The real "you'' is not your name. "Your first name" isn't really yours since many
people are likely to have the same one. This may even apply to your complete name.
"You" are not what you look like. This changes dramatically over time.
"You" are not what your occupation is or what it used to be. It is temporary.
"You" are not what you have (sum of all your possessions including a CD,
the size and location of your home, even your favorite truck).
"You" are not who others may think you are or even who you think you are.
"You" are not your story.
All the above are nothing more than what ego says you are that does nothing to
bring us together; it divides us.
"You" simply just are*.

You *are an individual unique beautiful complex wonderous intelligent and
temporary creation of the universe, probably insignificant.

IMHO

Aye.

Grandma used to say, "We all are either Human Beings having some kind of
spiritual experience or Spiritual Beings having a human experience."

Foggy-

You're right in an intellectual sense, and a very interesting person I'm happy to know, but in an everyday sense, you're an enigma because I know so little about you other than what you write.

My common sense tells me I need (or at least WANT) to know more about you to make you more real, even if that information only "types" you into certain categories that make it easier for my mind to feel that I know you more wholly and feel that much more comfortable knowing you.

Just my personal limitations, I guess, but I may not be alone in that regard.

Cheers! Joe. :teeth :thup

Foggy-

What I'd really like to do is to meet you in person at a C-Brat get-together.

Some of those experiences I've had with other C-Brats have been very meaningful and endearing and have enabled me to enjoy this form even more as a result.

Take Care!

Your name may not yield much for help in the frame of reference, but many times I will look at the profile for that info (boat size, type, engine(s) or geographic reference) to help in understanding the point of view of a post, or to help in answering questions posted in a helpful orientation. Often the profile is left pretty blank, and as some others have mentioned too, I enjoy the personal approach, and see this site group as extended family, also enjoying the tech side as well, even though I'm less technical than many here.

I am not criticizing if one wants to maintain some level of anonymity for either person, place or timing, but as has been noted, if someone is really trying to delve, it is possible to get tons of info from the web, whether it is posted here on the C-BRATS or not.

Not so Anonymoose

I like the offer, however the mechanics may be something else given our
geography.

Are you asking me for "a date"? If so, I have to ask, "What's your intention"?
I am married but... Are you a "x" Navy man by chance? Grandpa told me stories
about them on shore leave... In our area (Lake Michigan), we solve dilemmas
like this on "Beaver Island". No joke. It's the real deal.

Anyway. Happens my eldest son lived in Redding, CA where I visited in '07. We drove
from MI to there and up the coast to Portland, OR. It was clear weather and gorgeous.
I see the attraction to this area. Did not visit Lk Shasta tho' I wanted to but not
enough time.

I'll pencil this offer in my calendar and see what develops.

Aye.

Harvey, I'm not so anonymoose either; and don't fear changing that.

Hence, when you see "Foggy", the one behind that name, for those
concerned, is Martin Strand III, Cedar, MI.

Do some feel better now?

Aye.

Look me up. Stop by. Whatever...

are initials OK? I like to go by JD, even though they're just my initials. People call me JD, and when I phone you, I'll say "this is JD". So is that OK?

As long as a person is not dyslexic, JD should be ok.

While my username is pretty much my name, that is not always the case on many other forums I frequent. You will find I most usually sign all my responses or posts with my name. Mostly because I think it makes it easier for others to address my posts/replies in a more personal manner. That being said, how do any of you feel when you get a "form" letter, or other response from some agency that you've written, and their letter comes with the simple signature at the end

Sincerely,

Billing Department

If you write it OWN IT! Midnight Flyer is a boat. Colbysmith is a User name. But Colby is a person!

Colby... :-)

Colby:

It's the sign of the times.

Less expensive for the sender (It's business you know)? Yes.
More impersonal? Definitely. Yet we often take it otherwise (#!@*&#!!).

Getting a computer generated notice or "letter" in the mail is not much different
than getting a phone call from computer generated voice.

Even a personally generated email to a friend may result in a computer generated
reply something like "Sorry. I'm out of town until xx/xx/15. If you need to
speak to someone now, call xxx.xxx.xxxx."

For laughs (my revenge), I often answer the phone in a computer simulated
monotone voice (not much different from my own) "Hello. This call is being
recorded for quality review. If you wish to speak with Foggy, push one....
pause..... Oooh, I'm sorry. Foggy is being given his bath by the nurse. Please
call back later."

That shows 'em.

Aye.

Foggy,

Check my tag line.

It is true

Martin, Could not agree with you more fervently. I feel it is respectful to those readers who would reply to a posting to identify yourself using both your proper given and surname.
