Orca's Expedition

Thanks for posting that link to the photos, since I have not been able to access the expedition site from my Mac. Hope you will let us know when there are new photos.

Hi C-Brats

The reason for the high bill on the engine repair is the high wages in Fort MC Murray.130-160$ an hour !!!!
The other reason is that we did not expect to see old peases of an old impeller floating around the cooling system.
A dealer checked the engine and did not find
anything wrong, even when we test drive the Boat all was ok. The problem begun on the Athabasca.
I could not belive how mutch rubber was in the cooling system. A wonder that this engine ever worked in the first place....
But, after the repair it works grate.... :D

We are still in Fort Chip !
We are waiting on some equipment. The side scan sonar is from Hummingbird. Locking forward to install it on the boat.... :D

The people in Fort Chip are great, all are very, very friendly and helpful :thup

The ice is still thick on the lake. the first 30 Km are open and the Lake is splitting, so I think in 6-10 days we are able to go around the lake :D

The reason we go so slow is that we have to film a lot, this trip is no leisure it is work, but nice one :D :D :D
We also have to wait a few times to meat with my cousin and his cameraman, because they are doing the areal shoot of us on the boat...

ORCA is behaving very well, but I wish we had a 25 or the cat....

So as soon we have the Side Scan Sonar installed we are heading around the lake.... :thup :thup :thup

Regards from Fort Chip

I will really be interested to see how you like the Hummingbird side scan. For those who do not know about it, there is a owners group:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sideimaging/ There is a daily (sometimes more or less frequently) digest. There is a mixed response to this unit. So far we have not been impressed enough to spring for it, but for a dedicated fisherman, it might be worth while....Not the versitility of the true rotating or towed side scan units, but some very interesting photos.

Chris – are you going all the way to Stony Rapids or just to the first choke point at the east end of the lake?

If only 30 km of the lake is free, that leaves well over 250 km of the lake that has to clear up. The ice must be getting thin for that to happen in 6 to 10 days.

Thanks for the updates. I have enjoyed following your adventures.

Hi C-Brats

Yes, we are going to Stony Rapids. Finally the Lake is open :D
We had a lot of Wind and Thunder Showers the last days.

we just received the Hummingbird side Scan. In a few weeks I can tell you exactly how good it is....

We hope that we can start in 3 days, we have to get ORCA out of the water to mount the new Transducer for the Side Scan !

I AM EAGER TO GO ON...........

Hi C-Brats

Well, there is no way to get ORCA out of the water in Fort Chip, so no way to instal the tranducer, bummer... :o

We have to go arround the Lake Athabasca without the 997...

As soon as we refill our tanks we will go on...
There are some fires arround Fort Chip it is very smoky here...
(They cant be to big, I cant see the fires on the NOAA SAt ! )

I hope further down the Lake there are no fires...

How about log rollers to pull the boat out of the water? I have done it witih boats considerably larger and heavier than the 22. Also you might be able to just lift up the transom, with a sling (tow truck? or logging boom) and put on the Starboard block, so you can screw in the transducer.

Hi C-Brats

We are in Camsell Portage, very nice place :thup
Just 8 people living here, but they have pretty fast
W-Lan-Internet, AMAZING

We hade very big waves the last days. A lot of very big " TREE SISTERS " :o

Today is the first day without big waves :D :D

The Lake is just gorges, very very nice....

But a lot of reefs and shallow water, not easy to navigate...

We do soundings on the way, we already have " hundreds " :D
and we will do that over the entire trip...

Also we will take pictures and movies with the side scan sonar :D

We hope to get the transducer mounted in Fond Du Lac.

Regards Chris

Hi C-Brats
Well, we are thinking to mount an kicker on ORCA...

These Lakes are dangerous, without steering power

There are a many many shallows and reefs

Our concern is weight, because ORCA is already HEAVY

Any idea what engine with how mutch hp... :?

Any idea how to steer and give power with an kicker,
because there is no way to sit in the back and steer and give gas...

The other problem is that orca has trim tabs, so the engine has to be behinde the tabs...

http://www.c-brats.com/modules.php?set_ ... _photo.php

We probaly have to do that in Yellowknife on the Great Slave Lake...

We would really appreciate any help... :thup

Hi Chris,

I'll give this a shot. You can always tie the kicker to your main via a connector rod. You can buy them thru West Marine, Cabelas and other online stores for under $75.

The problem with installing the kicker with trim tabs is clearance. We have Bennett M120's installed on ours. In order to clear the TT's we had installed a Mini-Jacker kicker bracket. See the pic below:
DSCF1420.thumb.jpg

Good luck in finding a solution.

We have a 15 hp Honda, on a Garlick bracket--it drops about 11 inches, and swings back about the same amount, clearing the tabs. (on a CD 25)
Probably a high thrust 8 hp would be appropiate for your boat.

Thanks for your help :thup :thup

We are in Stony Rapids. There are a lot of reefs on the way, and we where waiting for that, we hid one.
But just with 3 miles an hr. Our prop saver saved the prop and the lower unit :thup :thup

One screw broke and the prop saver slide a little bit up and took all the pressure :D :D

I went diving in the old uranium pit in Gunnar, man the shaft went down 600 feet, so I just went down
about 15m. Lot of old stuff down there. The filming went fine, our underwater camera worked great :thup

The radiation in gunner was about 4.50 micro sievert. The normal on lake Athabasca is 0.09.........

We visited some very nice fishing lodges on the way, man they have MONSTER trout and pike here :thup

We had a nice dinner with the local RCMP(Stony Rapids), great guys. The will loan us there trailer today, so we can mount
the transducer for our Side Scan Sonar :thup

Regards from beautiful Lake Athabasca

Chris,
Glad to see you are still moving and I'm glad to see your updates. You better get that kicker installed so you can use it in the skinny water instead of the main.
Cheers
Ron

Hi Ron

Yes, that would be way better

We finally installed the transducer for the Humminbird 997c Combo GPS / Side Scan Sonar.

The short test in the harbor was really exiting. we could see the rocks on the ground absolutely clear, even some old tires

We will start tomorrow to the Athabasca Sand Dunes, where we will meet my cousin and his cameraman.
They will do the areal shoots of ORCA at the Sand Dunes.
I hope the weather will be good, because there are not mutch bays to hide on the Sandy south shore of Lake Athabasca.
The locals warned us it can be VERY dangerous there if a high winds will approach :cry .
We would not be the first boat to be blown on the shores there.... :(

Thanks again to all for your help. :thup :thup

Regards from stony Rapids

Hi C-Brats

We are in Fort Smith and travel the Wood Buffalo Park for a few days.

I lost my Olympus digital camera in the Sand Dunes of the Athabasca, bummer. So for the next 3 weeks or so i cant post pictures

Lake Athabasca was not easy! This lake can be very, very rough...

We had a very bad trip out of Fond Du Lac, if we hadn't found a little cove and shoot trough some reefs, we had be on the ground f the lake..

This lake is full of reefs and shallow spots. Some of the reefs one can see only METERS bevor The south shore has no good shelters,
so if wind comes up there is a risk of getting washed on shore

The north shore is very nice, but has very ,very mutch reefs, we hit two...

The Slave River is worse, there are bolders everywhere, we where lucky because of the high water, but even than we had some problems...

Would I do the Lake Athabasca again in a C-Dory?????

ABSOLUTELY NO. !!!!!!

It is not a lake for Fiberglas Boats, this is a alu Boat lake.
What you need here is a small boat that you can beach and haul up the beach in bad weather...

Same for the Slave River.

In a kajak or Kanu it would be a nice but slow trip :D

Well, we see what the great slave lake is like...

We will spend some days here in the wood Buffalo Park and than head on down the Slave river in to the Great slave lake to Snowdrift and reliance in the east arm.
We have to watch, there is a flood warning because of all the rain south of here. Hope there will be just water and not trees coming....
