Have been using the ionearth map to check out the 1st leg of the Orca's journey down the Athabasca River from Ft McMurray to Athabasca Lake. In my opinion Chris is going to need all of his past river travelling experience to get the Orca through this stretch. I hope Chris has spent some time learning the handling characteristics of the Orca cause there is not much room for error going down river with a heavy boat even if its a CD. Generally navigating is easier and more forgiving going up river than down.
Having spent time on the Yukon and other far northern rivers in very remote areas, We have at least some comprehension of the magnitude of what He is up against in this undertaking. This really is a high risk exceptional undertaking by someone who knows and understands what He is up against and chooses to go for it. No matter what the outcome I greatly admire Chris. He has a spirit that compares favorably to other past adventurers who's exploits I have read about with fascination.
Its been quite a few years since we read River Horse during our wanna be a c-dory owner time period and like most others did enjoy the read, though I for one thought some of it was a little over blown on the adventure side. C Brats there will be nothing overblown on the Orca's Adventure. This undertaking by Chris in a 22 c-dory cruiser is way beyond the River Horse or any other c-dory that we are aware of other than the combined travels of El and Bill.
I know there is interest in this expedition. We are just surprised that it isn't at a higher level.
