Orca's Expedition

Have been using the ionearth map to check out the 1st leg of the Orca's journey down the Athabasca River from Ft McMurray to Athabasca Lake. In my opinion Chris is going to need all of his past river travelling experience to get the Orca through this stretch. I hope Chris has spent some time learning the handling characteristics of the Orca cause there is not much room for error going down river with a heavy boat even if its a CD. Generally navigating is easier and more forgiving going up river than down.

Having spent time on the Yukon and other far northern rivers in very remote areas, We have at least some comprehension of the magnitude of what He is up against in this undertaking. This really is a high risk exceptional undertaking by someone who knows and understands what He is up against and chooses to go for it. No matter what the outcome I greatly admire Chris. He has a spirit that compares favorably to other past adventurers who's exploits I have read about with fascination.

Its been quite a few years since we read River Horse during our wanna be a c-dory owner time period and like most others did enjoy the read, though I for one thought some of it was a little over blown on the adventure side. C Brats there will be nothing overblown on the Orca's Adventure. This undertaking by Chris in a 22 c-dory cruiser is way beyond the River Horse or any other c-dory that we are aware of other than the combined travels of El and Bill.

I know there is interest in this expedition. We are just surprised that it isn't at a higher level.

Hi Brats

Thanks Jay...

Yes it will be a very difficult expedition...

This is mutch more difficult than the yukon river, here we will deal with hard rock not with gravel or sand...

We will probably launch in Fort Mc Kay not in Fort Mc Murray, the locals warn us that the 50 miles to Mc Kay are the worst...

I think it would be wise to listen...

Regards Chris

I would suspect there are quite a large number of folks interested and following this adventure that we don't know about. (I would imagine quite a few C-Brats for sure!).

Dave---No doubt else where especially Germany there is a lot of interest. My comment is more directed to the C Brats and the number of hits on topics and threads related to this expedition compared to other subjects. Though I think before this summer is over the interest generated by this expedition will be near or at the top of anything so far. I believe it started out slow, but with the on spot mapping and continued updates by Chris it will become the INTEREST of the year.

I'd like to follow the expediton, but the link won't do anything.... just gives me a page full of the site name. I'm using Firefox... any ideas ?

John

DrJohn....go back to Windows XP with IE...it works fine. Or you could have to many "save me from myself" settings...set.

I agree that the interest level will rise as soon as they splash the Orca....we C-Brats like the feel of water under us much more then the road.

Chris, Don't listen to the local advice....find out in the first 50 miles if she and you are up to the trip.....Get..R...Done!

It's an Internet Exploder-specific site. :amgry

I for one view Orca's progress sevaral times a day. Probably many of you are doing the same. This is going to get very interesting. Thanks for the link.
A C-Dory owners prayer:
O Lord, Thy sea is so great and my boat is so small....

We went against the locals advice on taking our c-dory between Whitehorse and Carmacks on the the Yukon River and was glad we did. This is different. Like Chris said on the Yukon you have to deal mostly with sand and gravel bars. On the Athabasca Chris will be dealing with more hard jagged rock, a heavy fiberglass bottomed boat going down river doesn't like these conditions. Would be terrible to end the expedition in the 1st 50 miles and not worth the risk unless there is no other alternative. Massacre State Park on the Snake River in Idaho where we 1st tried out our Mokai has conditions like this and we were very Leary with the c-dory.

Double crap - have to first shut Ubuntu down and boot to Windoze and THEN run Internet Exploder - only way I can follow this at home...does NOT work on IE under Parallels. Here is what it just showed me (~5:10 p.m. 4-23-07), can this be right?

I have not run any rivers in a boat like the C Dory--only "tourist type stuff in "J" inflatable boats. I agree with Jay, that this is a very significant expedition with risks to the boat and crew. There are many types of adventures for outdoor people and those of us on this list have the specific interest in the C Dory. Others are interested in Kayaks, inflatables, jet boats etc. Some folks are into extreme sailing--such as the around the world races. There was another expedition over the last year which involved a 55 foot trawler type going part of the route which Chris is going and then thru the North West Passage and on around the world. http://www.idlewildexpedition.ca/theplan.htm
Each of these types of expeditions has it challanges and risks. I suspect many of us who own C Dories will follow this specific adventure with great interest.
This is not to take away from "River Horse" expedition--for that was a first and had its own adventures. All of these build upon the backbone of previous adventures.

We wish them all the best of luck.

Chris – Good Luck with your expedition. It has been 20 days since I was on this site so I missed a lot, but will be following your progress closely. Have a great adventure and thank you for posting your progress.

It would be nice if you could make it to the Pacific Northwest and make one of our gatherings after your expedition.

No word. His boat is still at Fort McMurry. Probably hard at work on options. On a earlier post he mentioned wanting to be up there early enough to film the ice break up on the river, so there may be some waiting time there anyway.

Bob

You well expressed what I was trying to. Thanks for the link to the Idlewild expedition. Stayed up very late last night viewing that site. What a trip. Will be reading their complete log in the days ahead. We are extremely interested in the Orca's expedition for the reasons you stated, but also am interested in all expeditions and adventures of this type.

I was wondering if the weather/ice on the river was currently a factor.
There was a piece on the Weather Channel about rafting one of the Canadian Rivers where the rafters were caught under an ice shelf and almost lost their lives. Looking at the footage (possiably simulated) it looked as if this type of ice shelf could be a significant risk for even a C Dory.

Hi Brats

We are still in Fort Mc Murray and will be at least for the next week,
because Dan has to bring the Truck and the trailer to Hay River on the Great Slave Lake ...

There is still a lot of ice floating down the Athabasca River...

We talked to some very knowledgable Locals and they warned us to start in Fort Mc Murray.
EVERYBODY was telling us the same, start in Fort Mc Kay, 50 Miles down the River.

So that we will do now. One local brought us a bunch of old river maps on the Athabasca River

There are lot's of Rocks in the River from Mc Murray to Mc Kay, after that there will be still a lot Rocks but not as much as of the first stretch to Mc Kay.

In the next 2 days I will go through all the equipment again and repack the boat and organize it better

OK, the trip route can be viewed in either Foxpro or IE. However, if you want to see the GPS location you must have IE 7, which only works with W-XL, AND have Foxpro off. Even then I can't get it to work with the hybrid image. Will not work with W-2000, as far as have been able to find out.

Hi C-Brats

We are still in Fort Mc Murray. :(

We find a very nice campground near the Airport. :thup

The ice is gone, just some chunks on the rivers edge :thup :thup

We will launch ORCA in the Athabasca River on the weekend.

Dan will than drive the truck and the trailer to Hay River on the Great Slave lake. He will than catch the bus back to Mc Murray ...

So, we will start our Journey on monday the 2nd of May at the barge terminal in Mc Kay :D

To the problems with tracking ORCA :

Chris,

I'm sorry to hear your users are still having problems.

Regarding Macintosh users: The basic Virtual Earth features do work on most Mac browsers (Safari and Firefox). But, some of the advanced Virtual Earth features that we require, unfortunately do NOT work on Safari and Firefox (Mac, PC, or other platforms). The Virtual Earth development team is aware of these problems has attempted several fixes, none of which were entirely successful. I am monitoring the developer blogs, etc. in the hope that this will change.

Due to these Virtual Earth limitations, we only support IE ver 6 and 7 at this time, as is stated in our FAQ. Since (as far as I know) MS stopped offering IE for Mac after ver 5, this unfortunately means we can't offer support for Mac users.

Regarding the ORCA not showing up: After the map appears, users MUST hit the "Go Live" button (located on the left of their screen a little more than half-way down the page). If they plan to use the 3D map they should change into 3D mode and then hit the "Go Live" button.

Failure to hit the "Go Live" button is the only reason I can think of for why users might not see the Orca.

Your users are not the first to have issues with the "Go Live" button. Jerry has asked me to look into an alternative approach, I will email you in a couple of days when I know more.

As of course, if there is any way I can contact any of your users, I am happy to do that, please provide contact information for them.

I hope this helps.
