iPhone 3g

Hang in there Marc, I have an HTC Touch and IE works pretty well - this site is very good looking on it.

Opera requires Java and I'm not sure it's robust enough yet for WM6.

The iPhone is one nice phone but it is unavailable (no AT&T presence) in Montana - where I live hence the WM 6 phone. Not trying to push this twoards the Nerd Shack but there are lot's of easy tweaks for the HTC and good software to get the most out of your HTC Touch. PM me, Marc, if you need some help.

Have a great day!

We have Verizon because of the good coverage with the wireless broadband card and the traveling we do. So, no iPhone for this Mac family. I got a different phone when I was due for the "new every 2" last year... it plays music, does video, has a snow-blower attachment, and is more complex than Chinese algebra. What it doesn't do worth a darn is make/receive phone calls. The numbers are small and hard to read and the buttons aren't intuitive. For my next phone, I will look for one that makes/receives phone calls. For my other handheld entertainment needs, Joan bought me an iPod Touch... the features of the iPhone without the phone. So, when I've about exhausted the battery by looking at the C-Brats, I can still get a phone call. I use my other iPod for downloading podcasts. Before MP3s, our CD collection was pretty minimal: all the Jimmy Buffett stuff, Eric Stone, some classic rock and R&B, and a few girly-singers that Joan likes.

Ain't technology grand?

Does the wi-fi work pretty good on the new iphone? I wish it could work like a gps unit for my car. I know it has a gps receiver in it but I dont' think it would work like a garmin ect.... Maybe the next iphone?

I have a question. I have a palm treo that I hate. I was suppost to use it as modem for my lap top but have never gotten it to work. That and all the other problems I have had with it, three replacement in one year. So will the iphone act as a modem for my lap top or is a card the only answer. I just dont want to pay for the internet twice, once for the phone and once for the card. also what is a wm6 or a htc. also is there a better program for my phone then the one it came with window moblie, hey I just anwered one of my own questions.

WM6 is windows mobile 6 ,a newer operating system that some of the treos use and the HTC phones use and http://www.htc.com/www/default.aspx and the Motorola and other smartphones use . You can easily "tether " thats geek speak for hook it up to your laptop for internet .That usually 10 $ per on top of per line data chg.
Your Treo is probably on the Palm software or WM5 which is more limited than the windows M6 product . If you sync to ms outlook the windows does a great job with that.

Unfortunately the iPhone will not function as a modem for a laptop. I know that BlackBerry's can, but (at least with ATT) additional fees apply. Despite the cost, I think an aircard may be your best bet.

I have internet both on the verizpn pocket pc and the USB720 modem. The phone based internet is much slower whether viewed on the phone or used as a modem.

The USB 720 air card is a screamer if you have good coverage in the area, and it works at phone modem speeds in poorly served areas.

My phone is pretty fast as a modem, its on the Alltel/Verizon [merging next year] system which is CDMA .ATT is GSM. I think it depends on you local system, coverage, and hardware . We have a Verizon Card for boat shows and travel. It works very well .

We have a laptop aboard (and ashore) with an aircard linked to AT&T. No fixed 'connection' in our condo, either -- get great coverage and use it most everywhere for internet. Fast enough for me (much faster than a phone modem). Then, for phone, we have a simple Nokia cell phone that is just that and no moe -- a phone. It is also linked through AT&T, and it works most everywhere. Simple and easy.

Bill and El: I am totally in the dark ages about wireless. How do you set up the Aircard Service? Both on the provider end and on the laptop end.

I did a little calling around today and found out that I have to pay another 50 buck on top of the money I already pay to use the trether. I already pay for internet service on the phone but to use that as a terther cost another 50. a air card would cost 50 plus tax as a seperate line, so add 25 to that. I fell like standing on the corner in heels. at lest that way I would be getting paid. I was told when I got the phone that I could hook up with out the extra cost.

Tom, at the risk of stretching the Just Be Nice rule, I gotta say I don't think you would be making that much.

Those phone outfits are just like everyone else who provides a "service". First they get you and then they know they got you. It doesn't matter what provider you have - they all cost about the same once you get what it is you thought you were getting at that great price they offered.

The TV cable, satellite, or whatever outfits are even worse. I finally did figure out how to get a decent break on something. My wired house phone was $30 a month for basic service with caller ID. No long distance. For $10 a month I got another cell phone line and have full, unlimited service that is really full service. I even kept the same number that I have had for many years when I canceled the wired phone. Guess what - the stupid Dish Network for the stupid TV started charging me $10 more a month because I don't have the receivers plugged into a phone line. I looked into cable and the other satellite outfit, but it would still cost as much or more to get what we got. I hate the Dish Network people, but I would be cutting off my nose to junk them.

Ya know, I've seen Tom in heels and it wasn't pretty. Given the choice, I'd pay money for an air card and service rather than see Tom in heels again. Maybe it was the mini-skirt? Come to think of it, the heels wouldn't have been so bad had he shaved his legs... but, I digress.

It's gonna cost your around $60 per month to have decent wireless broadband, no matter who you deal with. Cable or satellite TV will be around the same with 100 channels (no premium) of which you will watch 6 or 8. They will all tell us what a good deal we're getting and why they are cheaper than the others. Lies. We have gone for months with no TV while out on our boat, but I NEED the internet access. Man does not live by sunsets alone.

The minimalists here (and I won't mention Bill and El by name) will tell us that less is more. Not less internet speed and service, though. This thread started as a discussion about the iPhone, but from my perspective, the handheld items are more fun than function... when I want to surf or really BE on the internet, it is easier with a laptop than a small phone. Connectivity comes with a price. At this point, I'm still willing to pay to participate.

Lots of these handheld devices have a great "cool factor", but when it comes down to it, I like having a real keyboard and a big screen.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Sounds like some companies are starting to build software that will turn the iPhone into its own hotspot. In that case, you could have just a WiFi card in the laptop. See the following story.

Although it says it was pulled, the Nullriver website says its back up on App store.

Tom,

I have the Palm Treo 700w and have used it as a modem on several occasions. To do so I downloaded a program called PDANet. They have a program for both the Palm OS and the Windows Mobile OS.

I'm tired of my Treo, so I purchased a Blackberry Curve 8330. Well the Blackberry operating system drove me nuts so I returned it last night. I'm still on the hunt for a good Verizon (read no IPhone) phone to replace my 3 year old Treo.

I do like my HTC Touch.

Examples:
Today my wife and I were grocery shopping, she had a call from a client and needed to speak with the owners of a house we were at earlier in the day. We did not know the number. No phone book. No problem. I opened google on IE and typed in the person's name, city and street address. We got the phone number quickly and all went well.

Last week we had a freak storm blow in - 84 mph winds, 3" of rain and damaging hail. I went into the country to check out a friends cabin who lives in Georgia. The entry gate had been blown over. I snapped a few photos and emailed them to the owners on the spot. Spent the next 4 hours getting the gate (26' x 18') out of the driveway.

This runs on Windows Mobile 6.0. and can be used as a wireless modem for $10.00 a month extra - just let them know andd they will add the service on a month by month basis. The screen is not bright in direct sun, but I do not use it in direct sun. I do love my iPods, but the iPhone does not cut/copy/paste and I use that alot.

I hope this helps some of you understand the value of a smart phone - there are lot's of good ones out there.

My best
Ben
