12/16 - Lake Washington/Locks Cruise - CANCELLED

Lloyd – I added a page to my web site with information about the marina I will be launching from. If you have not seen my itinerary, it is HERE. The additional information about the marina is available as a link at the bottom of the first text box labeled Launch. I will send you an email with my contact info, if you don’t have it.

I will be checking the weather on a daily basis, starting tomorrow and posting the likely weather we will encounter on the way. It will be posted to this thread.

Hey, that's great info. The maps really help. I have never been there, by land or water. This will be a good experience. Don't worry about dinner. If I could be positive about the time I might take you up on that but we sometimes don't keep a really tight schedule. I will call you when I get there however. Hope the weather works out.

Thanks for the update, Dave. So far so good. The cold isn't a problem but the wind could be. Well, I say the cold isn't a problem. In the 20's and it certainly would be. We'd have a 16' popcicle.

With what looks like lite wind on saturday moring is anyone intersted in run from everret down to seattle thru the locks?? We would have to leave early, about 7am from the dock. That would put us there about 10am or 11 am. The run back would have to be timed for just before sunset. I dont mind the dark as long as the water is clam. sun set is about 4:30pm or maybe come back in the morning.

We just made our reservations at Bell Harbor Marina right by Pike Place for the night of the 16th, (C-Cakes had to puff up and pretend to be a 25'), and more space is available if anyone is interested. There are locking gates and night time security. It should be fun to have dinner in Seattle and wander around some. We will go back through the locks on Sunday, sightsee on Lake Washington and head back up to Whidbey Is. Sunday afternoon. See you on the 16th.

All, sorry to say that I won't be able to make it this weekend. My wife and I are in the middle of a do-it-yourself remodel and are way off schedule. Have a great time and don't sweat the locks.

Sorry to learn that Chubby Bunny cant make it. Oldgrowth Dave of C-Voyager has agreed to be our designated Lockmaster in William's place. Dave is coming, by sea, from Olympia so there are some weather-related factors involved, but, he has graciously accepted the position on the condition that he is in fact present. What more can you ask for?. Dave will have just traversed the locks at 10:15 AM so his experience will be as current as it gets. Let's all give a cheer for Dave.and his 16 footer You know it is written "...and a little boat shall lead them.... I think I'm getting punchy.

Modified Weather forecast
It looks like the winds will be worse than I predicted. Thursday night winds will be closer to 30 mph and gradually decreasing the next couple of days. By Friday night they will be down around the 11 mph range and Saturday morning will be in the 6 to 8 mph range. The temperature will be around freezing Saturday night and in the low 40’s Sunday. There will be very little wind Sunday. So other than being cool it should be a nice trip back to Olympia.

Dave, any fall-back plan? If the winds actually diminish we should be okay saturday morning. But if they still hang around the 10-15 range it will be miserable going north. I haven't boated the southern end where we are starting so I don't know how much protection you get, but once you hit the narrows I know how bad that can be. The boats won't mind, but my back will.

It looks like Caryn & I won't be bringing C-Dancer down from Anacortes but we're still planning on showing up at Lake Union SeaRay. Is the schedule still the same where you folks plan on being there about 11:00am? Let us know if there are any changes to the plan.

The schedule:
Here again are the marks we're shooting for.
1000 Meet a Montlake cut
1100-1115 Arrive at Lake Union C-Dory Dealer
1200-1215 Leave dealer
1330 Arrive at Locks and turn around
1345 Leave locks on return trip, 8mph speed limit
1535 Arrive back at Montlake Cut
1615 Sunset

Great to see so much enthusiasm. Oldgrowth, that is one impressive flight plan. If you get decent water I bet you'll come dangerously close to perfection. Years ago we ran predicted log races out there with less precision.

I look forward to seeing everyone, but given our wild weather I think I'm going to leave my sweetheart at home and rendezvous with Saturday landlubbers.

Lloyd – our departure is right at the end of the windy period and small craft warnings. Eld inlet (Olympia) is somewhat protected and will be calmer than once we round Boston Harbor (Dana Passage) and the Tacoma Narrows. I will have my laptop with me and it has internet access so I will check the weather just before we launch. From launch to the Tacoma Narrows is just about 2 hours, so if we make it that far, then have to turn around we will miss the get together. The decision will have to be made based on what we think the weather will be like in the Narrows and north an hour and half to two hours after launch.

The predictions and weather pattern indicate we will be right on the edge. It could go either way but looks to be more in our favor than not.

I am not sure of Jim’s plan if we are not able to make it, but one alternative is to explore the south sound as a group Saturday. Jim is quite familiar with it and can probably show us some interesting places.

The timing on this one did us in again. :x Due to Jim being the Rear Commodore at Tacoma Outboard Association,he has to host and put on a holiday "cheers party" at the club Saturday between 1 & 5 or so. We will be thinking of you all having a fun time going through the locks and such. So I guess we will hoist a beverage :cocktail in toast to you all Saturday.
