Hurricane and tropical storm force winds within 240 nm NE...200 nm se...150 nm SW...and 180 nm SW quadrants. Highest winds 90 kt gusts 110 kt increasing to 95 kt gusts to 115 kt tonight prior to landfall. Seas 12 ft or greater entire area. Highest seas building to near 50 ft NE near center NE quadrant prior to landfall. Elsewhere winds 20 to 33 kt. Numerous squalls.

We just called home (still in SE Missouri) - water is rising, high surf and waves on South Padre Island, but no call to evacuate. Rain, some wind, and more surge through today expected, but nothing like what's going to go down in the Galveston Bay area through Louisiana.

I've held off saying it, but I think we dodged the bullet on this one - good luck to the Brats in the Houston/Galveston area and all along the Gulf Coast. The sheer size of this one is going to cause problems - the weather folks are calling for the coast to be affected 270 miles outward from the center of this storm! :disgust The surge looks like it's going to be a serious factor for hundreds of miles as well (20 feet or more of surge in the Galveston Bay area). The Weather Channel is showing some nasty scenes. The eye is going to make landfall near high tide, making a bad situation even worse.
 
Anyone remaining on the coastal areas south of Houston are facing nearly certain death. The strange part is that many are planning to "ride it out". Unbelievable.
 
Our thoughts and prayers are with those who are in the way of this storm. We have a 3 foot storm surge at Pensacola--which is more than we had from Gustav, even though Gustav was much closer. If we had a 20 foot surge, it probably would take out our house--we had about 10 foot with Ivan--and it was lapping at the door--but not inside....

I certainly hope that none of our C Dory friends stay in Galveston or Clear Lake. It looks like there will be lots of devistation down there....
 
Wow! Watching coverage on the Wx channel and on KHOU (Local Houston Channel) this morning, they really took it on the chin down there. We've got a bunch of Brats on the Map there, at least 5 including ALOK.

We're hoping you folks, and your boats are OK. Hope you got them out of harms way, saw some footage of boats sunk and being beaten about.

We just got word that our sister and brother-in-law, who live near Rice U.
in Houston are OK. They do not have any power OR water. They do have
plenty of bottled water and food. No damage, just some small limbs
down.

I did 'talk' to my brother-inlaw Thursday on "SKYPE" while he was at work
in RICE, he is a math prof., and they had already done all they could to be ready. Looks like it will be awhile before they have any power, even though they are across from the major medical hospital facilities,
downtown.

Prayers were answered for our family. They are extended to those still
affected by IKE; past, present and future.

Jeff, the project slowly lumbers on for the slip and long pier and inside sea wall refurb, The ramp has been done for a while and is better than we ever expected . I have both the Wefings and personal slips currently loaned out but one will be free anytime I need it . Just say the word and its yours................

Just got back home from being an Ike evacuee.

We personally did OK. Fences down, a huge pine tree down in the front yard- luckily it fell away from the house. The final storm surge was 11 feet instead of 20 because the eye went up Galveston Bay instead of coming ashore a few miles to the west, in which case the winds on the "dirty" side of the storm would have pushed water up into Galveston Bay and doubled the surge

But all were not lucky. The seaside communities of Kemah, Seabrook and Clear Lake Shores have SEVERE flooding and damage; the water was still 5 feet deep in buildings this morning. The surge has not quite gone down and the sewers and toilets are still backing up. Chambers county, on the other side of Galveston Bay, got the dirty side of the storm and 50% of homes are damaged.

Galveston had major damage to all its piers (one of which I learned to fish from almost three decades ago) and severe flooding. The city will not have power for some weeks. The part of the city behind the seawall otherwise did OK but no one has yet seen pictures of what has happened to the thousands of home beyond the sewall.

The community of Bolivar peninsula, through which the ICW passes before it enters Galveston Bay, has been largely destroyed.

I personally saw at least a hundred boats lying on the roads, including 50-footers and bigger. Trailer boats are everywhere- some seem to have just floated away as the water rose, carrying the trailer with them. A large repair facility nearby had many boats blocked for bottom jobs- they all floated off and are now sitting in various parts of the neighborhood. There are also 30 large boats sitting on the road just before the Galveston causeway. The TV crew said that one of them still had the engines running. I do not know how that could be! We had taken our boat out of the water.

All in all, a scary storm that will affect many lives. This is the second time in three years that my wife and I thought we may lose everything (the last time was hurricane Rita). We dodged the bullet both times, but others were not so lucky. We are Gulf coast veterans, but this is making us think long and hard...

Addendum to the above message:

Just got some new informtion- the surge was 17 feet, not 11 feet. The Kemah Boardwalk, a pretty big tourist attraction, is GONE. Restaurants are blasted through, rides are destroyed, the boardwalk itself was completely taken out by the surge.

Glad to hear from you, and that all is "OK" with you, the family and the boat. Sad to hear about the damage. We know full well what you folks and the others are going thru. I also know what you mean about thinking long and hard--and what would happen to all of us if we had that 20 foot surge.

A friend had sold his 55 foot sailboat and it was it Clear lake. Fortunately it only got one 6" wide gouge (the boat has circumnavigated 3 times and is extremely well built)....But lots of boats lost and damaged. Our thoughts are still with you all!
 
It's a pity that they abandoned all those boats to the storm rather then using them to help people escape. From what I could see on the news the freeways were all fairly clogged with evacuee traffic. When they built the new ballpark in San Francisco they included a ferry dock so people could board the ferries directly. It's amazing just how fast this works; the ferries are gone, with thousands of people, long before most of the cars even get out of the lots.

I haven't gotten down to Clear Lake to look at, or for, my Classic, which was in a dry stack at one of the marinas. I hope it's OK, although I know it probably isn't. But they're pretty tough little boats, and if it's still around it may be salvageable. This will be a good test of the construction!

I have some big limbs hanging in my pecan trees but other than losing a window screen and yard mess my house is pretty much OK.

Alok, your report is heart breaking. Those of us who live on the coast understand what brings us here. There are many folks who share your thinking, though.

Mike, I hope you are able to find your boat intact.

For all those dealing with the aftermath of Mother Nature's fury, our hearts go out to you.

Hi Folks,
A little web sleuthing on some Clear Lake forums linformed me that the harbormaster is back at my marina and he reported that all the dry stack boats are still in the stacks. Hopefully it just got wet. It was sitting on a rack about 3 feet off the ground with the plugs out so maybe I just have a cabin full of water.

Think positive thoughts!
