Would you buy a C-Dory on sale?

Will-C I appreciate and understand your comments fully thank you. I agree that you need to be constantly striving to move forward, status quo in our industry equals a slow demise. Marc and I are currently working on his 25' Cruiser with the intent of showcasing some new options like a composting toilet and solar panels installed here at the factory prior to delivery.

In regards to current available options we are currently in the process of working through all the price sheets and will have all new price sheets and options list that will reflect exactly what we will be offering and it will also tie into the webpage accordingly.

As well I am sure that most everybody knows that I have been putting build photos of each particular boat model that we build in the C-brats factory section, we will now start setting this arrangement up on our webpage showing new finished products so that everybody can see first hand what we are capable of building.

I would like to thank all the C-brats for their continued support and ideas that you bring forth. We are working diligently to resolve most issues that are brought to our attention and appreciate greatly all ideas and comments so keep them coming.

Wow! A CD25 with a composting head and solar panels - what an idea! Oh, wait, we are half way there already with Daydream and solar panels are on my "must have" list, although they are not yet quite on Patty's list! Seriously, as factory options on a CD25, showcased at boat shows (hopefully the SBS too!) this would be killer! The "ready to cruise" edition of the CD25, on a trailer, with a Boat Show special package price - I should write a Nor'westing magazine article about that. Oh, wait. I already did... :lol:

It is interesting to me how prices have increased in spite of hard economic times. In 2007 I could get a well equiped 22 Cruiser for $45K and now I understand from Kipsak the same package is $75k. I hope good economic time never come back.
 
Um... to my recollection a basic boat show special NEW was somewhere's around 59000. Not fully equipped. I don't know where you get you numbers.
Fully equipped NEW pushing 70,000 in 2006,2007,2008.
 
The costs of all types of polyester resins have good up much more than you might anticipate. Several times a year there have been 10% increases in both Gel coat and laminating resins over the last few years. These costs compound for a marked increase in the cost of the boat.

Poor economic conditions actually make costs of the boat more. There is some loss of economy of scale--and you need skilled labor to properly build boats.

There have also been improvements in the boats--although I am not sure if you are considering cost of a 2007 model lat 2006 or actually in early 2007--since there would have been some increase in cost during that time also. Also I understand that Triton Marine has to pay a royality to Fluid Marine to use the molds.

Don't forget that the company building the boats in 2007, is no longer in business!
 
The $45K was from a dealer in September 2007 with the boat in stock. I have no idea what the list price was and I suspect that none of us have ever bought a boat for list price. I understand economy of scale for a finished product, but normally raw materials are less expensive during hard times. What is driving the price of fiberglass materials?
 
Poly/ vinyl resins are related to many raw materials. Oil is a major factor. A boat on a lot also may have multiple factors affecting the selling price. There are a number of boaters who have paid full price. Boat sales are far different than cars. Dealer costs are many and often very high. A number of dealers have not survived the last few years.

Recently raw material costs.have been way up. This is not unusual. Although there a few who will work at much lower wages, these may not be the ones you want building your boat.
 
I have to say I agree with WillC. I never saw a good reason for the factory to make both the 22CD and the 23 Venture. Putting all the fancy interior in the 23 Venture was simply a way to differentiate the two models and have a nicer boat to offer. The alternative of having a 23 with a "standard" and high end interior makes a lot more sense to me. I believe the 23 hull is a much better design in a number of ways and to sell both the 22 and the 23 doesn't make much sense to me. Ditto for the 25CD/ 26 Venture.

If it were me, I'd only make the 23 and 26' boats and I'd drop the 22 and the 25 entirely. Then I'd offer the 23/26 in a "standard" model and a luxury edition (LE) model similar to what car manufacturers do. I think this would be better for the buyer who wants the standard interior and less confusing to the consumer who would have two less boat models to sort through when making a decision. I made this suggestion several years ago when Fluid first acquired the Venture molds. It sounds like Triton may be heading in this direction.
 
Well, regarding the original question, yes I would. As for the subsequent discussion, I fell in love with the original 22. Dotty and I have had boats laden with all the interior stuff and have absolutely no interest in having the walls covered with any of it. If you are talking about heftier cleats, as Les mentioned in another thread, that's a different story. Even those mean more to former live-aboard Dotty than they do to me. Anything other than the basic, original C-Dory is something else. Fine for those who want that, but please, don't call it a C-Dory. Now, where is that 14 footer I can haul, handle, and enjoy for the rest of my days?
 
I fully admit that a I am prejudiced but I don't think there is a better looking boat than the C-dory 22 crusier. I believe that more units of this boat have been sold than any other C-dory. Why in the world would you want to drop the line? Not trying to offend anyone, but that is how I feel. Now back to the original question, would I by a new C-dory if I was looking to buy, yes.

I also agree the 22 CD is a fine looking boat. But I don't think it's any better looking than the 23 Venture. For all practical purposes, the boats are targeted to the exact same market and the exact same applications. If you put the standard interior in the 23 Venture, it's similar to the 22 cruiser only the hull design is better.

Stop making the 22?? That's like saying Ford should stop making the F150. If I were buying a new boat today it would be a CD22 Cruiser. Nothing else comes as close to ideal for me.

OK - just call the 23 venture a 22 foot C-Dory. There's far less difference between a 22 CD and a 23 Venture than there is between the early and current years of an F150 and the newer F150's are BETTER than the older ones in many ways (just as the 23 Venture is better than the 22 CD). :wink:

Having had both a cd-22 cruiser and a cc-23 venture(06) model . I like them both for different reasons the 22 is easier to tow lighter car ,truck etc and seems a little saltier look IMHO. The 23 rides better in chop and has a bigger cockpit for my wife and I that was the deal the larger cockpit and finished interior and better ride sold us .

I think if Triton has the mold they should continue to offer both boats let the market place tell them what is selling . I do think a 23 that is more in line with a cd 22 interior would sell a lot better then the full blown optioned boat especially down here in moldy florida . MY cc-23 is more in line with the cd-22 except for the ride and larger storage areas. Let the Dealers and Triton decide what sells and yes I would buy a boat at discount if I still was in the market
