Tired of the Rain

We have had a few tantalizing days, but mostly we have had clouds, rain, wind and cold here on the Upper Left Coast - it sure would be nice to see the sun! Today the rain is kind of going sideways here at Birch Bay. Not looking like good cruising weather...sure hope it changes by next weekend!

We're sitting in the same rain, Pat -- but sunshine is in the heart, and what a great day yesterday digging clams with your family (and then munching them) -- and then the great news about the engagement, with Lydia's phone call. SUNNY STUFF!!

I thought it was only newcomers to the PNW like me who were tired of the rain. Makes me feel better that the natives feel the same way. I thought they would be used to the "liquid sunshine"!

I thought that people moved to the PNW because they liked the rain, and wanted it!--I'll bet that there am some counties in the United States, who would love to trade places with you right now!

I'll have to admit that one time (we were in the Misty Fjords area,) we didn't seen the sun for two weeks, and it was getting depressing!

Hey Pat,

We'll be up that way in a few weeks, and will try to bring the sunshine with us! :wink If we can't do that, we'll at least bring sunny attitudes. BTW, it's going to be 110º here in Phoenix today... but it's a dry heat. :crook

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Bob is right, at this time we would like to trade places due to the fact that we are in a 50 year drought in North Alabama now. There is still good boating and we are hoping for a shower before too long. Ron

El, in her optimistic way, likes to say, "There's no such thing as bad weather -- just bad clothes."

Of course, the worst drought in 50 years, is a serious climatic event -- that's bad luck! Or is research suggesting a reason for the drought?

I just "learned" first hand about the PNW rain!

In the San Juan Islands from June 10th to the 17th, and it rained for the first two and last two days, with clouds and broken sunshine and sprinkles in between!

Was colder than Redding in the winter on the four rainy days, but could see how beautiful it was on the three in between.

Now at least I'll have a better idea of where all these islands and places are when I read about of all your PNW adventures.

We chartered a 50 ft Beneteau sailboat out of Bellingham and visited many of the usual venues.

Joe.

Bob – two weeks is nothing. It can easily be two months at times.

The weather bothers me. I like it all, (hot, cold, dry, wet, storm, calm) I adjust my life for the different kinds of weather and find something to enjoy about each and that included when Mount St. Helens dumped on me in 1980.

Pat-
Quit your whining! I thought you were the one who said that bad weather was made for c-dorys.
Cathy, our daughter and I took a four hour cruise today and it rained, it blew, so what.......well it might have been a little lumpy coming back to Olympia and I might have got a little wet loading the boat on the trailer, but what the hell.............bad weather was made for c-dorys.

I'm south of Birch Bay and it was overcast and rainy, but no wind. It was wonderful boating weather yesterday.

I'm new to the PNW, but I found it rather interesting that there were very few boats out yesterday. The sky was cloudy, drizzling and gray but the wind was non-existent and the water was flat.

We cruised from Edmonds to Port Townsend and back and literally saw only 5 or 6 pleasure boats in the water the entire time! I know it was Father's Day and being a dad I wanted to be on the water, but where were the other fathers?!?!

Give me 10 years and I may think differently, but with my C-Dory I'll take this kind of weather everyday. I don't really care for the winds when they pick up...then even sunny days suck! :sad

As a life-long PNW native I too get tired of the rain, but have also tried living in other areas for short periods, like Redding or Phoenix or Bethell Alaska. I will take this anytime. Now that I have a c dory it really isn't bad. Used to get to hating the rain in the face with the whalers. Felt like riding a motorcycle, only rougher.

I was going drift boat fishing on the sky for fathers day but the rain jump the river up too much saturday night so I canceled and went bowling in stead. I was feeling bad but after susan talked to her dad in sacramento I felt better. 10 days in a row over 100 and no wind. , now I remember why we moved.

Yesterday our pastor was starting to complain about the wet weather but then he reminded us all that if you take the first four letters of our state it says it all ..........lol.......

I just got back after a week on Lopez and loved every minute of it. Saw one of the brightest rainbows I have ever seen at sunset arching over Mud Bay with eagles flying overhead. The whole time there the water looked to be flat calm, including the nefarious Rosario during both crossings on the ferry.

Joe,

Up here, thems called "showers with a few sunbreaks". That's practically the forecast for all of fall and spring. :wink

Summer, which theoretically falls between spring and fall, probably will occur here from about July 29th to about August 5th this year...Yes, I know, heat, humidity, drought, sub-zero temps, 24 hour days/nights, hurricanes, tornadoes, and a lot of other stuff is a lot worse and I should stop whining. And I have a great boat, and can turn the Wallas up to 6. But damn, this continual cloudy / cold / rainy / windy weather is still DEPRESSING. Jim B., we are counting on you to bring some sunshine for the Gulf Island cruise!

Jay, that's a nice photo! It and this thread remind me of the old Hawaiian saying... "No rain, no rainbows."

Also: "Never judge a day by the weather"

And don't forget: "Speak softly and wear a loud shirt."

At the SBS last year, I was told how beautiful and warm the weather is in the PNW during the summer... and then got there during what was locally called a "heat wave." And still found that we didn't pack enough sweatshirts! In July and August! Looking forward to all that lush green.

Best wishes,
Jim B (goin' where the weather suits my clothes)

Cruised to LaConner for lunch with Joe and Ruth, then through Deception at full flood tide, across Rosario flat as a pancake, and now hooked in Hunter Cove in Lopez Sound -- nothing but sunshine all day, no wind, glorious here in the NW!! Jim and Joan -- this stuff about rain -- nothing but rumors -- bring your suntan oil!!
