The "Do It Right" Boat website

I would just like to express my appreciation to everyone for the valuable information I receive each time I visit this website (which is every day)
I call it the "do it right" boating website because it is so clear that all of you are dedicated to getting it done the right way. (apparently even the factory doesn't always do it right -- re: latest trim tab post.)

I just bought the '82 angler posted on this website. (it is the best I can afford for now) Buying an older boat like this can make one nervous but it seems reasonably solid as far as I can tell so far. Nevertheless, it feels like I have this team of professionals behind me ready to tutor and guide me as I go along. This gives me a great deal of confidence.

Thank you for being there and for caring as much as you do for us who are just beginning our journey in the C-Dory world.

David and Val -

Back when this site was forming, we called it "the pub" - the place where friends could meet, laugh, share honest thoughts, and respect each other. So, as Barry says, we're not pros - we are friends, sharing experiences, respect and friendship. Welcome to the pub folks!

Welcome aboard, David and Val. Folks here understand the jitters of getting any boat, because we've all been there. One of the great things about this place is that one "just be nice" rule. It works almost all the time.

Perhaps it is the unique niche that these boats fill, but I think those that are drawn to the boats share some kindred spirit. That bond may be part of the reason that many of us are here. It's great that when you have questions, someone here has likely been through that... and the willingness to share and encourage.

It's that encouragement and real friendship that keeps some folks here, even when they no longer own a C-Dory. Getting the boat is just the beginning.

Congrats!

Best wishes,
Jim B.

This is one hell of a boating community! Welcome, and congrats on your Angler. Bring your questions and a positive attitude and it's hard to go wrong here. I have sure asked my share.

Greg

I can almost gaurantee that you will love the 82. I have had the 83 for over 15 years and I will never let her go.we have caught a lot of fish and shrimp on her. I also have a 93 Cruiser that may go down the road in the near future.

You are going to find that the 1982 boat is an excellent boat and will give you many hours of pleasure on the water. Welcome aboard!

Thank you everyone for such warm and welcoming comments! This morning I read every one of them to my wife as we had our morning coffee.

Tomorrow my oldest daughter is getting married so I have to put the boat on hold for the weekend as I prepare my "dad speech". As soon as the dust has settled from that I will get right on posting a few pics of our new C-Dory.

My son in coming home from the military for the wedding (He had been in Afganistan but is in Edmonton right now) When he saw the pics I sent him of the boat he was very excited to go out on it when he came home

To me that made every penny I paid for it suddenly worthwhile!

Catch you all next week! I have a wedding to get ready for!!

The first C I ever saw was an 83 model with twin 2 strokes. I saw it in 85. I fell in love immediately. That boat had done the inside passage to Alaska. I had 5 kids from 10 to 20 all needing a lot of money spent on them, so I couldn't pay the 8 or 10 grand that was being asked at the time. I remember walking around that boat and looking for weakness in the gel coat or anywhere. I knocked it with my knuckles and thought to myself, "this thing is indestructible." It took another 28 years before I was through paying for 5 kids to have masters and doctorates and to have any money left over. But, 3 years ago, the magic happened. Mine is a 2007, but looks the same to me as that '83. Glad the manufacturers kept the design. Dreams do come true.

David and Val,

I see that you are in White Rock. You are pretty close to the San Juans where we will have the Friday Harbor C-Dory gathering this May. One of the best ways to get to know the boats and the people who love them is to attend a gathering. If it is a little early in your C-Dory life for you to be comfortable making the trip by boat, there is a ferry that goes from Anacortes, WA to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. You would certainly be welcomed. We have C-Brats come to the event by ferry every year, usually they come on Saturday, that way they can visit on the docks, see others boats, join the group for the pot luck dinner and then take the ferry back to Anacortes. It is an easy walk from the ferry terminal to the docks where we gather. We'd love to see you there. If you have questions just PM me; Patti and I are the hosts.

Congratulations on your new boat. More importantly, congratulations on your daughter getting married and your son serving our country.

The fact that you bought a boat, any boat, around the same time your daughter is getting married is impressive! Well done!

As someone pointed out to me, I neglected to notice you're in Canada. So your son is serving your country, not mine. An honor just the same. :D

I wanted to get advice as a potential 'newbie' as I have not yet bought a boat. I am pretty slow to the game and bought a place to store my future boat but no boat yet. That said I'm impressed with the C dory and am going to look at a used one this week; 2008 22 footer.
I'm new to boating, looking for something to start out in and cut my teeth so to speak. I live in the South Puget Sound and my boat house will fit a 20 to 25 foot boat. I'm not mechanically minded (think Frazier Crane) so looking for something that is low maintenance and fun to get around in. I have two young boys 12 and 11 who like to fish and I'm also trying to get good at that as well....
Ok so that's the background...
Advice...not even sure what questions to ask. I guess what would you look for? What kinds of prices are reasonable (I'm on a tight budget). Is this a good starter boat for someone just learning? Etc. etc.
I appreciate any input. Thanks in advance to anyone who can steer me to safe waters.
Kris (Scandinavian family so I'm a guy just spelled with a K)

Kris -

Welcome to C-Brats!

I like your 'style (get a place to store the boat, then begin boat shopping!).

Many Brats will suggest specific boat models. You may want to think about what your early boating "goals" are in addition to fishing. Will you and the boys want to do overnights afloat? ...short cruises? ...strictly day-boating? Thinking about those factors may help you focus your shopping.

As for learning about boating - I would suggest that you begin learning WITH your boy's. You can all begin with non-nautical stuff like knots (buy each boy a length of practice rope ["line"] in a different color) and looking at lifejackets (PFD's) even before you start looking at actual boats. Show them how a compass works. Visit a marine supply store and ask questions. Visit a couple of boat yards ... encourage the boys to ask Questions. By all means - look into taking a USCoast Guard Auxillary or US Power Squadron BASIC BOATING COURSE!

By all means, think about attending the upcoming C-Brat Get Together (CBGT) in May at Friday Harbor. You don't need a boat. ...just ride the ferry from Anacortes and get a room somewhere in town; I can guarantee you will All be Welcomed, that's just the way C-Brats are!

You will have a GREAT opportunity to learn and grow with your son's.

Welcome!

Best,
Casey&Mary

You know that run from white rock to friday harbor should be a piece of cake as long as the weather is nice.South southwest from White rock, just east of Patos Island, down Presidents channel, thru the gap between Orcas and Jones and straight over to friday harbor.

Just have to watch the wind and the wave. That friday is a low tidal movement day. No big swings if I remember. As long as the wind is down you will be fine. The first part is open water. If the wind is from the northwest you can get some big swells but I like swells better then chop. If you do get wind just time you travel so the wind and the waves are both going the same direction, cut down on the chop.

My father had his boat in Semiahmoo for 3 years? So I know that it can be rough coming and going from there. You do not want to stay close to shore and run down in front of birch bay. It's really shallow and if the wind is up the swells from the north west pileup there about 2 miles off shore and can get really nasty. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks Starcrafttom for your advice on getting to Friday Harbor from White Rock

I will be watching the weather very carefully just before the event. Every chance I get I am working on the boat. On the weekend I removed the front hatch as instructed by others on this site and epoxied the edge and resealed it. Every time I do something I feel more confident with it. My next job is the bilge pump. It is behind the fuel tank so I am going to pull the tank to get access to make sure its working - or replace it. (I have to watch my boating budget though!)

By biggest concern on a long trip is the old Johnson. I do have a 2007 kicker I am going to mount just in case.

We have access to a cabin on Mayne Island so I did have the thought of going there first and then do a day trip to Friday Harbor on Saturday if things are calm enough.

I love being on the water but if its rough I would rather not

Thanks for being there for us who are newer at this

David and Val

One of the pleasures of this great group is the lack of pressure. If you don't feel comfortable with something nobody is going to make anything of it. Having said that why not consider making the trip to Friday Harbor in two days or at least think of a hidey hole if the weather begins to turn bad. Bellingham is a good place to stop and regenerate. Welcome and hope to see you at Friday Harbor.
