Should we feel violated?

Free advertising, where do I sign up?
My ego is huge and I would like the whole world to have pictures of my boat over their mantle! I love it when i'm in a small scenic nook and a tour boat comes by. All them camera toting tourist really make my day. They hang off the rail until the very last moment clicking away, so I guess I'm doing my part to help promote our boats huh?
P.S, I always position the boat with her best side facing out!
:smilep

Hey Mike- They can have a picture of "Lizzie" the boat over their mantle, but not one of Lizzie, my grandaughter. The heck with it, I'm deleting all the family pictures.

Where is 'the "permissions" function'? Thanks.

Go to the page where the thumbnail for your album shows up. Below it there is a tab that says "album action". Click on it to open a pull down menu. One of the menu options is "permissions" which brings up a tool to set various parameters.

I feel left out. I don't have that option on my pull down menu. I do have

add photos
edit captions
new nested album
rearrange items
sort items
new comments

but that's all. Why?

I agree with Dave, we're polevaulting over mounts of mouse dung... :disgust

I'm going boating! :D

John,

You had/have my permission to use pictures of "Fishtales" as you had at first requested -
"Dear Brats and Brat Admin,
Y-Landing Marine Services is introducing the C-Dory at an upcoming boat show in Providence RI. We would like to have a TV or computer set up so passers-by can view a sort of slide show of the C-Dory boats in action.
Unfortunately with the boats so new to us and the snow and ice up here we wouldn't be able to show very much with the pictures we've got.
Would it be possible to get permission to show some photos from your site?
Do we have to ask each owner?
Just let us know the hoops and we'll start-a jumpin!
All the best to the Brats and Happy New Year!
John"

We were under the assumption that you would use the photos in a "slide show" as has been done at the Seattle Boat Show in the past.

Where some of the members are, rightfully, upset about is the use of the photos for advertising purposes, as in the ad linked in the first message of this discussion. A fart of poor judgement. It would have been better to use some of the photos from the Factory or some boats at your facility.

If a photo of our vessel was used for advertising, I would feel honored that it was chosen.....however, I would certainly appreciate that a request of me be made for authorization to do so.

John, although to my knowledge our vessel was not chosen for the honor on your site, I wish to thank you for "jogging" my OLD MEMORY from January 3, 2005, in which you asked for permission on another thread that you recently "brought to light"............... :embarrased

My reply to you at that time was as follows...."You are welcome to any photos from the "Sea Shift" album. (It has photos of our former 16' Cruiser and our current 22" Cruiser. We love to sell C-Dorys)"

Obviously, I gave you permission then and you still have my permission.

(I really hate this thing called "AGING").....(can't remember one day from the next.... )

To the moderators, please let me know if I'm punished, sanctioned or whatever.

Don't make no nevermind to me. It looks like you may have inflicted more harm upon yourself than could possibly have been warranted by taking such a tone with this group of unique and valuable salespeolple.

From a newbie, but at least a graybeard. There are a lot of personal images and other stuff in the photos and (IMHO) they should be limited to registered users.

This current abuse could just be the beginning.

I have been checking out this great site for a while, and then decided to register. It wasn't that hard and I'm happy to be held accountable. Way to much personal stuff here. Please lock it up. If not, I'd have to think twice about posting much personal stuff. Hate to sound like a paranoid crazy, but the times they are a changin'

Just quick copy and paste from the original thread in which New Hampshire guy asked for permission to use some photos for for a boat show

We're not big on rules around here, but it seems to me anything posted here was done so for the good of the C-Dory community. Using the site content to educate potential buyers about our boats and this community is a good thing, and I've yet to meet a C-Brat that didn't like to show off their boat. Still, it's nice that you asked for permission.

Since it's overly burdensome to ask for everyone's permission, particularly since it's not always obvious who to contact for a particular photo, I'll suggest you take whatever you like for your demo, as long as you also provide credit back to our community - a simple sign indicating the source of the photos, our logo, and the web site address would be fine.

Also in that same thread a number of people volunteered their photos with wording that could easily have been interpreted to mean "use my photos anytime". Even though that original post only asked for one specific purpose and even though Dave suggested that it would be appropriate to provide credit back to this site, the incredibly helpful responses of many users might have given one the impression that at least those photos were OK for other uses.

In brief, I think we should cut the guy a little slack. It's not clear to me if the particular photos that were used in the ad had been previously implicitly agreed to (even if explicit agreement may be required by law). I agree with New Hampshire Guy that it would have been nice if someone simply contacted him prior to suggesting that we'd been "violated". However, I also agree with Tyboo, that the "apology" probably did more harm than good and could have been worded much better. Perhaps a more nicely worded and less defensive apology followed by a request from people for photos that can be used for general advertising would smooth things over.

Interesting thread. I had not realized at the first that the dealer had asked for permission to use the photos. If he was given permission by either the web site host or indiviuals, then it is fair that he be allowed to use the photos.

I also agree with James. I did semi profssional photography thru college and Med school, plus gave lectures for about 5 years after retirement. During those times, I would vigerously protect any images I took.

When I was racing sailboats, I had agreements with Columbia/Coronado and North Sails that they could use photos of my boats for promotional purposes and we had several full page spreads in "Sail" magazine. However I as compensated by reduced prices on new boats and sails, plus regular recutting and modification of the sails. These concessions were worth many thousands of dollars and all the companies got were photos of the boat.

This is certainly an issue in the photography forums, and those images are considered to be copyrighted by the person who took the photo. If the dealer has permission from the owner of the photo, then it is OK, if he takes a picture of the boat in a truely public place (and probably best that the boat name be photoshopped out) then that would be OK. So we have a mixed bag here.

I don't see any reason to restrict access to the albums. I'll confess, Occasionally I'll print out one of the photos, for my own use, to see exactly how one of our ingenous members solved a problem. That photo is used and then destroyed. The albums help all of us, plus it helps the breed by promoting sales--but only in the albums--not taken without permission for sales pruposes.

Haven't seen this much commotion since whatzisname left the building (in cuffs).

Think I'll just sit back, have another

of coffee and see what kind of picture develops from all this.

God forbid a picture of my CD-22 would show up on anything marketable.

I think we should all dash off and copyright the names of our boats :smileo

I did already - right after I renamed it "Dogon Dory"

Roger on the Dogon Dory formerly know as the SeaDNA.

If you post it on the web, it is not protected. There is no protection that will keep your images from being copied. They can be copied by anyone that can view them; it’s just that most people don’t know how to do it. There is no special software or hacking tools necessary to capture your image.

There are members on this forum with web pages that have copy protection implemented on their sites to try to protect their images. It stops the casual user from stealing it, but will not keep anyone with a little computer knowledge from making a copy of it.

If you don’t want it used by someone else, Do Not Post It On The Web.
