Ready for the trip to Lake Powell

The new Mokai with its engine section removed and stored in the center section of the boat. I no longer have to launch 2 boats at the ramp.

After you take it all apart I think the center section is about 80 lbs. On the ground I was able to just carry it up a step ladder with one hand and set it on the bow rails and then just grab it with both hands and turn around and set it sideways on the bunk boards. Then bring up the engine section and set it inside the center section without the engine and gas tank. Turn the boat and put the nose back on. On the water I will be able to use a rope to lift the center section up on the bow rails. When I'm on the water and moving from one location to another I can bring the engine section in and set it in the cockpit. The center section can stand vertical in the cockpit as well.
 
Looking good Jody,

Do you know if there have been a lot of the Es-kape Mokai's delivered? I have had one on order for quite a while, and heard nothing from Mokai about future deliveries.

I'm interested to hear your review of the es-kape.
 
I put my order on the list almost 2 years ago. They just started shipping last august. The factory will not say how many they can produce it's a secret. The HIN is a date code so there is no help there. If you call them they will string you along. The boat is very well made and thought out. Sorry but you will have to just sit back and wait to hear from them. They did raise the price so they might be getting close to the end of the list. You might try begging with your trip coming up.
 
Have a great trip on Powell, Jody -- perfect time of year, if you tuck into the coves for the occasional front -- and you know all the tuck-ins -- have a marvelous time. El and Bill

That is a really nice looking C-Dory, (Love that color :lol:

If the mokai mfg is that far behind, I'm guessing there's not much chance of getting a color match :disgust I am really interested in how your travels with the Es-kape Mokai go. It looks like a real adjunct to exploring. I am really interested in seeing one in person. (Friday Harbor or Lake Powell this year?)

Bill looks like the weather is going to be good if you can believe it. If it gets bad I'll find a couple of cottonwoods to tie to.

Harvey they got backed up because they had to build the factory for them and I think it took longer then they expected. The only colors you can pick from Olive and yellow. I wish they had a red.

Great looking, and much easier for you! How is the performance on the new boat, compared to the old one? How about room inside?--any change?--and have you tried it with the two of you yet?

Jody, It sure looks easier to get the Escape up on top then then with our 2011 & earlier models. I could do it with them in the past, but don't think I could still. If your going by yourself be extra careful. It sure would be easy to take a fall even with the Escape's lighter weight. In 2007, I got banged up pretty good getting mine back on top at Skagway, Alaska for the road trip home. We, like many others are interested in your comparison of the Escape with the older model.

JoLee & I are looking forward to your trip report.

I sure hope Brent & Dixie's new one arrives before we take off to Alaska. We'll have a great time either way, but both of us having Mokai's would sure add to the good times.

Bob maiden voyage I'll report on my findings when I get back. The cockpit is a little bigger on this one feels pretty roomy.


Jay I will be careful the water is still colder than I care to swim in. I think I can take the motor and the tank and put them in the cockpit. Then take the boat apart and move each piece to the bow rail with a rope and lift them up. I'm not sure how the engine section will float it's quite heavy on the pump end. Might have to just carry it along the gunnel.
 
The new Mokai worked great. It is very well made and thought out. Assembly was easy just put a rope on each piece and lower it into the water. Putting it together in the water was pretty easy too.

Jody, did you put it together off the swim step or over the gunnel? If not over the gunnel do you think it would be fairly easy to do so. Thanks for the photos & updates.
 
I put it together over the gunnel. The only tricky part is putting the nose on you have to push towards the stern and down at the same time it's pretty tight.
 
I'm looking at towing Midnight Flyer out to Lake Powel last half of June. Of course I've also heard about the drought out west, so just wondering how the Lake is for cruising? My plans are to launch at Bullfrog, and spend 5 or 6 days between there at maybe all the way to Wahweep, but if not, then between Bullfrog and Dangling Rope. Jody, I'd be interested in hearing what you find the water conditions to be. Thanks. Colby

Shouldn't be a problem the different lake levels just mean there are new things to see. Low lake levels mean there will be new places to hike and explore. Launching was fine at Bullfrog and the lake should be up a little by June. In the channel right now there is 300 plus feet of water.
 
We spent ~ the first week of April on Powell. Wandered much of the lake from Bullfrog to West Canyon. Lots of places to go and hike, but some canyons ran out of water quite a bit short of where they did just a few years back. Seemed to us that a lot of additional silt has been deposited in recent years.

The Escalante surprised us as we headed north - very suddenly went from 25 feet deep to 7, earlier than we expected. We could just barely get to the location of Three Roof Ruin, and could not see how to climb up from the low water.

You should be fine if you take it slow when the water starts turning murkier or getting shallow.

We were at Lake Powell yesterday (4/11/15) The lake elevation 3591' and no problems with navigation. The fishing was also good. Stripers and Walleye. Trolling in 35" to 50" deep waters. Great day, temps in the upper 70's, "put on the sunscreen". It was just a day trip, Launched at 8 AM and back home that night. Fish fry for Sunday dinner.
