paper charts vs: navionic chips

:lol: This is so funny Joel... I have visions of you standing over a restaurant paper place mat trying to find a light house and navigating around a mustard stain left from your cheese burger lunch. :thup
It makes me glad that I'm not the only one that might try that :idea:
 
Place mat? Yeah, we do that. You can buy a place mat of the San Juans for about $8 that is laminated. It is a great "big picture" in a small size. To be more factual, we don't "navigate" with it, but we do plan with it when we're in the area. We did the same thing in Desolation Sound. Hey, you use all the resources you have... and if it makes picturing the route easier, it seems like prudent seamanship to me. 8)
 
Actually there are some very good "place mat" charts--make great planning tools--or to permently laminate on the table!

Incidently--the Compass thread reminded me why it was a very good idea to know how to navigate using paper charts (or at least computer charts lacking the paper charts) if the chart plotter fails--which is more likely than GPS failing.
