Orca's Expedition

I don't know which features are supposed to work on Firefox / Mac but when I click on the launch page I get a screen with the ionearth logo repeated numerous times. So I don't know what basic features I am supposed to be getting, but don't see any.

Ditto for me on Firefox / Mac...under Firefox / Ubuntu Linux I get the map and the "Go Live" button but when I hit "Go Live" I don't see the "Orca" link or get to the gold star...what I really would like to have work is IE under Parallels / Windoze XP on the Mac, this is kind of the best of all worlds, no rebooting to switch the OS - it seems to come close but terminates with the error "XML failed: transaction aborted" - is this possibly just something where I need to change a setting or get a plug-in or something? [on edit: whoops, I just got exactly the same result here at Birch Bay, rebooted the PC to Windows XP Home Edition (came with the machine), fired up IE 6 - got the very same "XML failed" error message on a real PC as I did on the virtual PC. So, gurus, what is going on when XML fails? This makes me think it is not Parallels that is the problem...]

Pat, see the current MacTech, which has an article about how to set up Parallels to boot from a Boot Camp partition. Dunno if this would fix your problem, but it seems like a neat thing to do regardless!

Because I have been off line so much the last month, I am not sure of the status of Chris and his expedition but looking at the live link, he is on his way now. It appears he is just past Fort MacKay.

Has anyone heard from him or know how he is doing?

I have checked on Orca’s progress off and on for the last three hours and he has not moved for the last 2 ½ hours. I hope they are not having any major problem. Only gone 34 miles so far and currently about seven miles north of Fort MacKay.

Anybody – know how Chris in the Orca is doing? Are they having boat problems or just ice in the river?

Looking at the map, they are back at Fort MacKay, about seven to eight miles farther south than that were yesterday.

Well,our water pump quit working. We are back in Mc Murray! :amgry

Just the towing back to town was 450 $..... :cry

Man, that engine is just trouble....

To fix that will cost a lot of money....

But hey, better here than 100 miles north...


We hope to be back on the water in 2-4 days... :D

Wonder if you put in a new water pump impeller and wear plate etc before launching? Or did you pick up debris. We always carry extrea water pump impellers. I would think that for this trip, with the glacial type of water, that you may want even a complete pump and housing (if applicable).
 
It looks like he has moved north to Fort Chipewyan. However he is on the road. Don’t know if he traveled there by boat then pulled the boat out of the water or if he traveled there by road.

My guess is he ran into more problems with the river or trouble with the boat or engine than he anticipated and is trying to bypass that part of the river or make up time because of the engine or boat troubles. I hope I am wrong.

I forgot to check his status the last four or five days. Did anyone here do so and if so was his last leg by water or land?

They may or may not be on the water. I have been following there progress most everyday. Don't think the satellite map location positioning is all that accurate. Going down river have noticed marker being on both sides of the river where there is not road or water. So they may have pulled it out of the water at Fort Chipewyan or it might be sitting in the water close to town.

They have been moving by water from Fort MacKay. Have not seen speed over 6 mph.

We are in Fort Chip.
The repair of our engine had cost us over 2400 US... :amgry

The problem was old pieces of an impeller...

The one we had in is fine, but the pieces destroid our pump we had to change that... :amgry

I wish the seller of the boat told us that he had problems with the engine.
I cant emagine he did not see the problem..

Take a look at my pictures....

The Athabasca River is difficult, shallow spots and lots of Rocks...

But the high water helped us... :D

We will be quite some days in Chip, because the lake is still most way full of ice, we also will install a side scan sonar here in Chip.

So, we made it WITH the boat to Fort Chip :D :D :D :D
 
What side scan Sonar are you putting in--is it a foreward looking, like the Pilot or Interphase, or a side scan like the Hummingbird 979?

I can see from the pictures why it cost so much to get the motor fixed. Working on it in that cold water came with a "frozen cohonies" surcharge.

Sorry for the bad luck...May the force be with you the rest of the way.
 
Chris – I am glad you are back up and running again.

That pest of the north looks like he could pack a mean bite. Hope you have lots of repellant
