Nor'westing magazine bites the dust

This is sad news indeed.

I was working for Nor'westing as the Marketing / Advertising manager years ago when the then owner sold it to Trader Publishing (not to be confused with the US Auto Trader).

It, and sister publication Boat Journal, were never a good fit for Trader, as it didn't fit their other advertising only publications. And if they have gone the way of the American version of Trader, they may have dropped their print versions entirely.

Trader's layout of the magazine was not the ideal arrangement. Ads were grouped on individual pages instead of being sprinkled amongst the editorial content. As an advertiser, we would want to be amongst text so our ad gets seen.

Nobody worked harder than Chuck to make Nor'westing a success, and it's sad to see it go. I will miss Chuck's informative editorials about the squeeze environmentalists have been making against the boatyards. His common sense approach was always good reading.
 
Our reading options for boating keep getting smaller and smaller, guess I will just have to boat more instead. I still subscribe to Pacific Yachting due to all the articles and adventures in the Gulf islands, and the PNW in general.
 
I've always picked them up free but I'd happily subscribe to see it continue.

I emailed them and said so.

I wonder if enough subscribers could be enlisted it could continue ?
 
I also periodically picked up the magazine--even found out Cal 46 in it years ago. Too bad it could not become an online magazine.

Nice thought Pete but I doubt it. Once a decision and announcement are made, it's probably far down the path to the end. Too bad. I enjoyed reading it when we had our two SBS trips.

You couldn't get enough subscribers to make it work.

Advertising pays for the magazine, and subscriptions are almost more hassle than they are worth due to postal regulations, labeling and postage expense.

If, as in the US, Trader Publishing is dropping their print magazines, then Nor'westing and Boat Journal are odd man out.

I'll bet they would still sell the magazine to someone if a buyer came along.
 
Very sad news, I agree. I thought it had sufficient advertising to carry it based on the pagecount but I guess not.

What are you reading online these days? I get Three Sheets Northwest but would like more choices.

Shoot! I was hoping I could follow up my article from last year in Nor'Westing, C-Dory's Fall from Grace (Chuck's title, not mine, I had called it The Rise and Fall of C-Dory), with a bit more positive article. Now, assuming that Triton does bounce back, where the heck is my next article going to get published?
