Today we closed on the purchase of a CD-22 Cruiser which we will rename North Star and have put our pin in The Brat Map at last. Thanks to Joel & Susan (SEA3PO), we had our lazarette hatches before we had identified our boat! Also, many thanks to some of the members with whom I have corresponded about C-Dorys and who gave me valuable insights and advice -- Bob (Thataway), Nick (Valkyrie), Dun (CTYankee) and the inimitable Byrdman. Also, thanks to all of you for your posts and photos on the site which have given us cruising inspiration, a ton of information over time, and enough ideas for modifications and changes to be made that I will be busy for several years. This site is an amazing site and is a very important part of our decision to purchase a C-Dory. We are coming from a Nordic Tug 37 and the site has been a fabulous aid in making the transition which has us very excited. We think that there is a whole lot to be said for having the smallest boat that will do what you need a boat to do and we think that we have found that boat for our needs.
The boat we purchased needs some TLC and has significant damp core in the cockpit that we need to address. The core dampness is due to the usual screws without epoxy or bedding and a rear bench seat with two legs. Holes were cut in the floorboards (no sealing) and into the cockpit sole. Core was removed for fittings into which the legs fit. These fittings were installed and were neither sealed nor filled with epoxy. Frankly, I think they rest directly on the hull skin and I suspect that if someone jumped from a high dock onto the rear seat, the legs might be driven through the hull! The boat also does not have a galley, fresh water system or a stove (probably a Wallas since we will boat year round) which I will be installing as well as adding radar and a high arch. Oh, and I have a couple of lazarette hatches to install!
Finally, to facilitate our travels and attendance at future Brat Cruises and Gatherings, and other cruising plans, we have ordered a tandem axle LoadRite disk brake trailer which should arrive in a few weeks.
So, we have a pin in the map and are very excited. We are looking forward to meeting some of you on the water. Thanks again to all.
