Hello again,

I’m looking at “Google Maps” and have some questions.

I/we were recently in Wichita and had very nice four lane road all the way from here in Iowa.

So is Wichita to Albuquerque all four lane?

So is 191 & 180, (from Albuquerque, Gallup to Flagstaff) four lane?

Then, do we pick up I-40 at Flagstaff?.

Regards,

Ron Fisher

I must be missing something--but why not I 35 to I 40?

There are advantages to interstates over 4 lanes. Mainly are the lack of grade crossings, lesser grades, No farm equipment, Small town speed traps etc.

Hello Bob,

Looks like 40 will get us to Albuquerque.

But as I zoom in, it shows 191 & 180, (from Albuquerque, Gallup to Flagstaff) then 40 again from Kingman toward Lake Havasu City.

So is 191 & 180 also 40?

Maybe we need a Road Atlas.

Regards,

Ron Fisher

Yes, I-40 will take you all the way across and is probably those other roads, as well. Yes, a road atlas would be a good thing. If you are going soon, snowy weather is very likely along I-40 across New Mexico and Arizona - keep an eye on the weather along that route. You could always go south in NM and take I-10 across if the weather is iffy.

I have something fun... I have a genuine UNIBOMBER cabin on a creek way out in the woods.... it is on 40 acres in the middle of miles and miles of BLM land... We only go out there once a year, sometimes not even that... but it has a name... it is called The Crossing California

if you put that on Google Earth it will show it.... no idea how that happened...it just is there.

We had some snow last week on I 10 (didn't stick), but I noted that I 10 near El Paso was almost shut down (one lane open) due to snow 2 days ago.

Be prepared for snow, (and may require chains) if you head down 35 and 40 this time of the year. There is some goodly elevation (7,000 feet or so), and a few grades. We have taken 40 across a number of times, but in the better time of the year.

Good traveling. Get a good road atlas, and "The Exit Guide"--it tells you a lot of information as to fuel, lodging, camping, food etc.

Thank you for the suggestions and tips.

We will be leaving Des Moines, Iowa, mid day on January 3rd, all I/we can do this time of year is start out, pay attention and be careful.

We are very accustomed to really tough weather in Iowa, however, this part of the country is more flat than vertical.

How well we all know that Ice is still ice, anywhere, which can certainly change ones schedule and upset a perfectly good day.

We look forward and enjoy road trips, however this one, this time of year, does have the potential to become challenging.

A few years ago, I/we purchased a 22 Classic in Spring, Texas (in early February) and stopped early one afternoon while coming home, after getting the truck, trailer and C-dory cross ways, several times (completely loose) on a long icy bridge over pass, somewhere in eastern Oklahoma, at road speed.

Connie has never been very demanding, but after that little episode, it was in my best interest to quickly change our schedule, we stopped at the next interchange with accommodations.

Stay tuned.

Best regards,

Ron Fisher

PS: the only time I’ve ever been completely snowed in, un able to move for a day or two was in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Have a good trip--you will be very near to us--as we will be in Salome, AZ for New Years and a few days there after!--but traveling on I 10 going East.

One of my friends (who travels back and forth to phoenix) called and suggested that even though it is further, since we are pulling a boat, Interstate 40 is a better/smoother choice coming home.

We will be going out via Kansas City, Wichita, Albuquerque, and Flagstaff and coming home via Albuquerque, Amarillo, Oklahoma City, Joplin, Kansas City and home.

Best regards,

Ron, Connie, Bear & Dolly Fisher

PS: You all are invited to come visit us in Guttenberg, Iowa, during the National Mississippi River "Meet in the Middle" C-Brat Gathering (September 6, 7 & 8 ), we will list later since details are still being developed.
