i have the 3G Att iPhone with unlimited data plan. i was going to upgrade to the iPhone 5 but was told i had to give up my unlimited plan (which I loath to do).
Any one know about jail breaking a 3G? I want to use it as a hot spot with an ipad and smart TV.

Yes your right. The updated version should be out in a month or so. I've stayed away from the cradles because they didn't offer the power that the big one has. If your looking for a data only solution you might want to check the towers in the areas your going to cruise the 4g and 4g LTE might not be available for sometime. If your looking to boost phone service then the one above will work. Wilson is also telling me that some of the new product will only work with a single provider.
I may be getting confused but I pretty sure, when you connect an Iphone to and IPad using the personal hotspot, the IPad will be able to use the GPS from the Iphone when using the Garmin Blue Chart App. If I start the Blue Chart App without the IPhone connected, I get no location for the vessel (the boat icon is not on the screen). When I connect the Iphone, the vessel icon shows up on the screen at the correct location. I can't say for sure it is the GPS position but it sure seems like it. I need to get out of cellular range to be sure.

It is an IPad Mini without 3G/4G. The reason I wanted to be out of cellular range was to be sure the IPhone wasn't passing location data based on a cellular connection. None of the GPS apps I have on the IPad see a GPS position, but do provide a position based on the WiFi signal. The only thing that piqued my interest was the vessel icon appearing and disappearing whenever I connected or disconnected the hotspot. I did find an app that says it would pass the gps from the IPhone to an IPad, but none of the GPS apps on the IPad could sort it out.

I have A T & T for the I pad--rarely use more than the 2 gig. We did use it in AK--works in most of the cities. We use a T & T because of reception at home and our family all use it. As I noted above, Verizon is better coverage, and we have the Jet Pac and a cheap Verizon phone for that. But those are used for business or emergencies.
If you have a 3G ro 4G I pad, you have the GPS built in. The Navionics does not require connection for the charts--just open them before you leave WiFi areas to be sure they are downloaded and open.
