Gopro on sale

Good price... you can use the extra $70 to buy all the stuff to make it more functional (extra batteries, tripod mount, head strap, floatie back, rollbar/handlebar mount, etc). OK, you might need more than that.

I haven't been able to get into the video features, yet. As a still camera, the limited perspective (wide and really wide) moves it into the "grab shot" range for this shooter. There are a few occasions where it comes in handy. I'm not one to strap it on the boat and just let it run... too much editing.

Should be fun when we're back in the Tropical Tip and the dolphins swim right up to the boat. Or kayaking. Or on the scooters.

anyone who does edit want to give there .02$ on what the best "movie making" software is? have a lot of raw video i need to edit and put to some music.

and thats a good price on the black. although I find myself in 720p at 60 FPS more than anything and rarley use the remote that came with the black edition.

I have a Mac and use iMovie. It is very easy to use and they have a number of templates that make movies with neat transitions, like this: https://vimeo.com/71694371

I have used Windows Movie Maker in the past, which is quite similar to iMovie. Also pretty easy to use.

GoPro just released GoPro Studio 2.0:
http://gopro.com/software-app/gopro-stu ... e#cineform

I have not used it yet, but it sounds pretty interesting, with pre-populated music and templates.

The most important thing I have learned is that you can't let too much raw data store up and expect to comb through it later. There is simply too much to go through. With the new software they released that allows you to review your video via the ipad/iphone, I usually view the clips on the ride home from Catalina, get an idea about how I am going to put them together into a "story" and then quickly edit a video when I get home. I figure that no one wants to watch a movie longer than a couple minutes, so I simply make all of my videos as long as the songs that I use.

I find that if I wait a couple trips, or come back later, it is hard to remember one clip from another.

That is my .02. Good luck with the editing!

Tim,

is your GoPro camera the current generation? If so, do you have it shutoff randomly during recording? That was an awesome movie, now I need to get on iMovie and start assembling my summer of footage.

chromer-

I did have a couple issues with the camera not turning on when I got it. I would have to open the case and pull the battery for a hard restart. It only happened a couple times, although both occurred while I was free diving and it required me to climb back into the boat and dry off.

Since I updated the firmware to the latest version, I have not had this issue. I have the new Silver edition and I love it.

My only complaint is that the audio is pretty poor when the waterproof back door is connected (which is all the time in my boat).

My biggest recommendation: buy a parafoil kite (20 bucks on Amazon). It takes amazing shots when affixed to the camera. I have a few in my picture album,

Secrets of the GoPro camera:

As Jim (our retired professional photographer) could tell you, the extra wide angle lens on the GoPro contributes a lot to the often dramatic effects achieved with the camera.

Telephoto lenses, the opposite of wide angles lens, tend to "stack up" objects shown in the lens. They make things in the real foreground and way off in the background appear much closer together than they are.

This is called perspective, and can be used to create dramatic effects.

The wide angle lens creates the opposite effect, or perspective. Objects in the foreground and background are separated by much greater distances than they would appear to be in our normal vision. Instead of the stacked up, shallowing effect of the telephoto lens, great separations and distances are created.

When the wide angle lens is applied to video, the motion adds to the depth perceived effect. Heights and depths are greatly exaggerated. Speed seems multiplied many fold.

This is one of the secrets of the GoPro camera. It makes your video seem like you're going much faster than you really are, and that the heights at which your acrobatics are performed, and the distances covered, are greatly multiplied, exaggerating your performance and the perceived danger involved.

I saw a video of a fellow jumping around on a roof and it's ledges the other day, and 4-6 foot jumps looked like 14 to 20 footers. Superman would have been proud to perform like that, but I wasn't fooled. :smileo

Hey Tim

Can you show a photo of the pole you had your camera mounted to.
Also a link to the place your purchased would be great as well.

I have some little ones who are growing up way too fast and need to capture these memories on video.

Just go to amazon.com and search "gopro pole" you can google that as well and find plenty of info.

I posted this link over on the Lake Powell thread. I'll post it here as well. It was shot using a Gopro and a DJI Phantom quad copter. Looks to be a fun way to remote control your camera. The Phantom is made to to fly the Gopro right out of the box. There are some Hexa copters that that will fly full size SLR cameras but, they are way spendy. This is a pretty good example of what you can do I didn't shoot this video. I just found it up on Youtube.

thanks for the info on editing. with most of my raw data is fishing so there is at times long periods of nothing for a few mins of something. in all the raw data I probably have enough for a few min video. also I am on pc so mac wont work for me. I need to get to editing this stuff.

I read a lot of reviews on rail mounts as I wanted to fix mine to my rocket launcher. there were a lot of bad reviews i found on the actual go pro mount. I went with a Ram mount off amazon and am more than happy with it. the pivot ball is nice for getting the exact angle too and can be moved somewhat quickly and without remounting the base. I have attached it to gaff hooks and various other things. I would recommend it to anyone looking and can mount to any kind of pole if looking for a
go pro pole.

http://www.amazon.com/RAM-B-149Z-GOP1U- ... ail+mounts

the kite idea is great I will have to get one of those. you just set it to auto pic take or will remote work with it up there? be cool to film like tuna fishing from that angle also.

Good idea on the Ram mount. I look forward to seeing your fishing videos.

For the Kite, I purchased this parafoil: http://www.amazon.com/Premier-Kites-Par ... afoil+kite

I attached the kite ring to a fishing pole with 65lb. spectra. I then fly the kite about forty feet or so behind the boat (enough to make sure it would not touch the water. I tie off the fishing line to a cleat and run the fishing line through the gap between one of the mounts and the pivot point on the case. Then a little duct tape as a "stopper" on the line, so that it can not slide down the line, and a piece of duct tape around the camera and line, to affix the camera to the line so it does not move around.

Then I run the kite back up at different lengths behind the boat, for different shots, all while leaving the road in the rod holder, "trolling" the kite. I have done this while on the anchor and while underway, up to about 10 mph. I have had the camera with over 1000 feet of line out, probably 600 or so feet off the water. It creates some really cool wide angle shots this way, but the best photos have come when it is roughly 50-100 feet behind boat, due to the wide angle lens.

This all might sound confusing, so I will take a picture next time I am out on the boat.

I set the camera to take a picture every 20 or 30 seconds. I tried video, but it bounces around too much. I have thought about making a picavet:

http://www.kaper.us/basics/Picavet_thread_diag.jpg

That might make a more steady video shot, but it is hard to beat a little duct tape.

thanks for the link I was going to ask what one you went with after looking on amazon and seeing the options. I got a pretty go idea of your explanation. but a picture of the rigging the go pro to the line would be most helpful I like the pictures this created too bad about the bouncy video if you could stabilize it it would be pretty cool also. great idea and thanks for sharing I am deff going to give it a go.
