GoPro camera question...

Yes, I used to be a professional photographer. No experience whatsoever with these little GoPro cameras, though. Anyone here using one? If so, HOW are you using it? Mostly video or stills? Does it do a decent job of still capture from the video? What kind of mounts do you find useful? Why is the sky blue? (Just put that in there to see if you were actually reading this)

Thanks in advance for recommendations, pro or con (wouldn't that be a GoCon camera??) for this. I have never really gotten into video for the fun of it, due to the amount of time it takes to edit (we used to do video production back in the shoulder-cam days). If this thing is more work than it is fun, I'm probably not interested.

Best wishes,
Jim

I didn't know where else to put this C-Dory off-topic question, although I think one of these might be fun on the boat.

I have 2 Gopro Heros and 1 Gopro 3 you do get some distortion with them because of the wide angle. But they allow you to mount them in multiple places and get multiple angles all at once video or stills every so many seconds. They let you capture the things you are doing. Mount them on the car or boat and go for a ride or on a long pole, on your forehead or chest. Just use you imagination you might get some fun video. I took about 5 minutes worth up at Yellowstone last week while I was trolling. I was the most boring thing I have shot yet. It looked like a still for 5 minutes. Put one on the Bike and go for a ride.

Jody, we saw you going down the road last week in Yellowstone. Looking good, and I hope you did well.

Where did you launch, where did you troll and what rig did you use?

Launched at Bridge Bay
Took me a while to find fish, But the Cuts are nice. Trolling about 15 feet down at the south end of Stevenson across the flats in about 20 feet of water. The lure I was using was an Acme Kamlooper in Yellow and Gold. I did take some Gopro footage of the prop in keeping with the thread.

I purchased a GoPro Hero 3 Silver a couple months ago. It is fantastic!

It is easy to use, has a bunch of different mounts available, and is water proof.
The editing is really easy as well. It took me about 20 min to throw together these couple videos.

Here are a couple videos from recent C-Dory adventures:

Nicely done, Tim. I really like the postcard look in that first one, and much of it doesn't look quite so fisheye... is there something you are doing in post production, or is that the way it was shot?

Many years ago, we did video production in the studio, and the editing on that was tiresome... of course, that was pre-digital. (insert old fart joke here)

Best wishes,
Jim

our go pro black will be here friday. my friends have made some pretty cool fishing videos with them. we will see what we can come up with.... so far I have bought a rail mount (not from go pro) so I can attach it to the rocket launcher.

My one buddie some how rigged it to a planner board and sent it down on the troll and got some good tuna take downs with it...

Got any links to his videos?

Thanks for the comments on the videos. My next project is building a small picavet for the camera and flying it behind the boat on a parafoil kite. I saw a guy this weekend at Catalina that had his kite up 500 feet in the air, towing it behind the boat. I am sure you can get some pretty amazing footage like this.

I usually shoot in wide angle, which gives it the fish eye look. You can shoot in medium angle and it looks normal. You can also adjust for this in iMovie.

If you have been thinking about getting a GoPro... get one.

I dont have one but am planning on getting one. They are pretty cool, and I think with a little tricky editing you can take out the boring 30+ minute intervals of uneventful trolling ;)

Thanks Bob!
I thought about you when I posted this. I figured it might bring back some memories in the C-Pelican. We just celebrated our 50th trip to Catalina since we bought the boat in February 2012. We are looking forward to the years ahead.

As the kids get bigger, it is hard not to think about a 25' or Tom Cat.

Well, after seeing this post and C-Pelican's amazing video with the Gopro - I have many hundred's less in my pocket.

We are on the motorhome for a Canada/East Coast trip so off to Best Buy. We mounted the GoPro on the front of the View and now need to figure out creative ways to film.

In a few weeks, we will be taking the CD22 to the West Coast and I'm looking forward to using the Gopro out there.

So, it is quite expensive to log onto C-Brats.com every day - but so fun.

Hi Robert,

Which model did you go with? Any particular accessories? I'm still in the consideration stage. I'm thinking it would be interesting to put it on shoot-every-few seconds on a trip and not have to deal with it... but, not so sure about that extreme wide angle view.

Best wishes,
Jim

Good to see that I have been a positive influence on the GoPro purchase. It is an awesome toy to play with and it is fun to capture your adventures and make videos.

I have the Silver Edition, which has many of the same features as the higher end Black edition, but slightly lower burst and video quality rate. I am not sure if the Black is that much better for the $100 increase, but if I had to do it over again, I would probably go with the Black since I use the camera all the time.

I have also purchased nearly all of the mounts, except for the wrist and chest mounts. I use the handle bar mount most frequently, attaching the camera to a pole for boom shots. I also use the head strap for diving and the suction cup for attaching to windows and the roof of the boat. Surprisingly, the suction cup mount is incredibly strong, so I am not worried about it falling off.

Have fun with your new toy. I look forward to seeing your videos.

Of course there's $100 difference between the silver and the black version, but $80 of that is the remote control which cuts down on the number of up the nose shots while your seeing if it is on. The remote is nice so you don't have to run to the camera to turn it on and off, but it does use up batteries fast for the bluetooth.
