The U.S. doesn't really subsidize big oil. As a taxpayer I subsidize big oil. Then I subsidize the government, both federal and state by paying taxes at the pump. I also subsidized the building of the Volt at GM. Oh, and I subsidized the volt by paying for tax rebates for buying the Volt. Lets see, oh and I subsidize all of the new "alternate energy" systems like...oh yeah, Solindra. Seems to me that the feds should take all of the subsidy money, and it would be better spent, just making gas free to everyone. That would be a big boost for the economy.
Seriously. I really liked the prototype of the Volt. It was edgy, futuristic and I was excited to see it go into production, though I seriously question the actual all-in energy savings considering that there are so many oil and coal fired generators on the grid. In any case I was terribly disappointed to see yet another androgynous jelly bean design. I think when someone comes out with an electric that looks like "the future." I will go with it. Until then, my little Malibu Maxx that gets and honest 33mpg on the highway with lots of power will continue to be the type of car I'll buy. I think the real alternative is really good mass transit. THAT I'd be happy to subsidize, but the auto manufacturer lobby will keep that dead and buried, but someday many decades from now, that will be the alternative fuel of the future-four people, 1000 miles for about a gallon of gas, and that is even on the current diesel electric locomotives.
Now, how can we get the CD's powered and get 100 miles on a gallon?
