Gas Prices

On the New's today!...Gas prices to go up 20 cents a litre in Canada this Spring . :cry ...that will bring it up to $6.75 - $ 7.00 a gallon. Gets me is all the big oil companies posted record profits last year.

Time to get the kicker out ... Tug

I changed my outlook

Exxon stock earns over 2% dividend for the last 3 years maybe longer. This is better than any CD yield

I have an acquaintance that has stock in some of those northern Alberta oil wells and he is earning well past 2% for sure. there is an awful lot about that oil business that "they" don't want to let "us" know.

In Connecticut, which has excessively large state taxes on gasoline, we are still less than $4 per gallon. Why is your gas so high in Canada? Is the cost of your gasoline so high due to taxes, transport fees, excess profits, or something else? I'm curious. One thing that is sure for all of us is that if war erupts in the Middle East, we all may be looking at $7 per gallon or more. It's a good thing we have fuel efficient boats!

Gas in Canada is sold in Liters. One Liter of gas is $1.259 where I live.
That makes it Can.$ 4.76 per US Gal. A 20 Cent/ per L incease would make it Can.$ 5.52 per US Gal.
I paid US $4.35/US Gal. in Alaska last fall.
I don't like the high prices either but as long as we keep bying Gas, the oil companies will keep taking our money.

I bought Chevron in mid 2010 and it has gone up 47% since then. It also is returning 3.07% in dividends.

I feel guilty but when the price of gas goes up it makes me a little happy. Or at least it offsets the pain at the pump.

One has to look at the "cost" of gas. Current 2/06/12 in theUS for a U. S. gallon:

Crude. : 2.71
Dist& transport. :.18
Refine : .22
Stor. Tax. : .02
St. &. Loc. Tax. : .08
State. : Excise. Tax : .36
Fed tax. : 18.

Total. : 3.76

OPEC sets. Crude, costs of exploration, leases, security & insurance. Etc... Investor gets 2. To. 3. %

In Pa 3.49 for gas, gas in Jersey 3.29 diesel New Jersey 3.76. Diesel in Pa. 3.99. Taxes on motor fuel 20 cents less per gallon in N.J. I think the little guy in Iran is playing us. Prices always go thru the roof if we are getting ready to drag the boat somewhere. Here we go again. What's bad is fuel oil for the home 3.40 a gallon plus. A fill up for the home with just a 275 gallon tank 700 dollars plus, ouch! :amgry

We have the highest gas prices in the nation. Yesterday regular was 4.00.

Ownership or investment in stock is probably good but how high can it go. Seems like my investments ended up being buy high and sell low, so I gave up on investing. I put the money in cd's and sleep at night.

My last car purchase a Volt has been my best car purchased so far. So far with over 3k on the odometer I have only purchased 15 gallons of fuel. That is why I rate it so high. I just keep driving by gas stations.

My return on the volt will be a tax savings, very little fuel purchases, enjoying the fact that whenever big oil does not seem to be making enough I am some what off the need of their product.

This was my solution for the ridiculous prices we have to pay for fuel. It may not work as everyone knows I drive a fireball waiting to explode. I will take my chances as this car is mostly run on electricity. When the volt pickup model becomes available I will trade for it as I am a truck guy. For now I am satisfied driving past fuel stations charging $4 for regular.

The price of gas where i live yesterday was $ 1.31/liter x 4.5 liters/gallon = $ 5.90/ gallon

if it increases by 20 cents it would be $ 1.51 /liter x 4.5 liters/gallon = $ 6 .80/gallon

Yesterday in SSMarie Michigan the price of a gallon of gas was $ 3.499

That is a difference of $ 3.30.....the exchange rate between the two countries is really not a factor.

There are Senate hearing going on in Ottawa about this very thing but the ( excusess ) reasons boil down to competition and the fact that American gas prices are subsidized by the government and not in Canada. I know it's more complicated than that but all in all i think Usa/Canada gas prices should be at par. Tug

The U.S. doesn't really subsidize big oil. As a taxpayer I subsidize big oil. Then I subsidize the government, both federal and state by paying taxes at the pump. I also subsidized the building of the Volt at GM. Oh, and I subsidized the volt by paying for tax rebates for buying the Volt. Lets see, oh and I subsidize all of the new "alternate energy" systems like...oh yeah, Solindra. Seems to me that the feds should take all of the subsidy money, and it would be better spent, just making gas free to everyone. That would be a big boost for the economy.

Seriously. I really liked the prototype of the Volt. It was edgy, futuristic and I was excited to see it go into production, though I seriously question the actual all-in energy savings considering that there are so many oil and coal fired generators on the grid. In any case I was terribly disappointed to see yet another androgynous jelly bean design. I think when someone comes out with an electric that looks like "the future." I will go with it. Until then, my little Malibu Maxx that gets and honest 33mpg on the highway with lots of power will continue to be the type of car I'll buy. I think the real alternative is really good mass transit. THAT I'd be happy to subsidize, but the auto manufacturer lobby will keep that dead and buried, but someday many decades from now, that will be the alternative fuel of the future-four people, 1000 miles for about a gallon of gas, and that is even on the current diesel electric locomotives.

Now, how can we get the CD's powered and get 100 miles on a gallon?

What is the real energy cost of the Volt? (batteries included)? How about the generation of power costs? Government subsidies--a number of them?

I have an Aeronautical engineer friend who got an early Prius--and has a second generation (due to someone hitting and totally his car---battery damage). He feels that a a low gas HP car, with good aero dynamics, would beat the energy cost of the hybrid.

416rigby ...i was referring to the Canadian Imperial gallon which is 4.569 liters to one Imperial gallon.. Sorry if i didn't make myself better understood. Tug
