Fenders and how many?

How many fenders would you say would be a good compliment on a CD22? I have seen as many as four total per side. Would six or eight g-5s be good? Keeping in mind I'm new to the boating world and will be learning how to dock and what not. :disgust Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

I think four is more then enought for day to day use, If you are tied up to some one that makes four ( two from each boat) between you and the other guy. if you get to many then it turns into a storage problem.

We carry 4, Polyform G-4 fenders. We often rig both sides when approaching a new marina. The front fenders are on short lines with hooks that snap into eyes beside the sidelights. They can be put in place from the cabin windows. The forward lines stay in place, held at the rear by cam cleats.

We have a couple of 18"X18" rafting fenders that we put out when a fellow C-Brat needs a spot!

Our boat came with 2 of the Taylor 6.5" x 22" fenders. I figure I need at least 4 total, 6 would be better, so I found them at Amazon.com for $12.83 each (dirt cheap) and they are direct Amazon buys rather than a 3rd party. West Marine was like $46 each.
I like the tubular type since they offer more verticle coverage, and can be mounted sideways too.

I also have 4 of the same fenders, colored to match the Jenny B. In most cases I hang one about even with the rear cleat and the other just aft of the cabin. As one very experienced Brat told me, "There's no rule saying the boat has to be parallel to the pier." Rarely do I need all four, but should the breeze be contrary and/or someone wants to raft up, the other two come in handy.

On our small boats we carry 4 fenders. With the larger boats up to 8 and of the appropiate size. We kept one large fender--as I recollect it is 36 x 12"--for rafting--but is too large to be pracical in the C Dory boats.

four of the 6.5x22 and two #1 orange polyform round fenders. Normal use is three of the cylindrical ones; one at rear cleat, one at rear of cabin on a dedicated fitting like dreamer's, and one under the forward side cabin window on a similar fitting. The fender whips have snap hooks spliced in at lengths that allow us to just hang them out the window or over the side without any fussing with knots, etc. Two have loops tied in of a size that allows them to be looped over the stern cleat. We can deploy the fenders in about 30 sec.

We find the round ones work quite well. The CD-22 is often lower than
many of the boats we tie up with, and the large round founders offer
enough distance to keep the boats apart. Also, since they work between
hulls and not rub rails, we hang them below the rub rails. That way, they
don't work themselves up like some cylindrical fenders can.

4 of the "sausage" type fenders and one large round. The sausage fenders (2) are kept tied in the cockpit - just flip them over on either side. The other two are pre-tied to slip over the midship cleats (from the cabin windows). The round one gets tied to the bow cleat and can be dropped just behind the bow rail on either side. The round is especially nice when coming to the dock, the sausage types are good for at the dock protection. On the odd occasion that we tie up to tall docks (not the cool floating ones you folks in the PNW have), the round one can be used against the cabin or the hull. Also works good when rafting.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

We carry 2 of the sausage variety, can't remember the size, we have some that are about 18 inches and some about 22" long. We usually take the larger as well as a good sized round ball bouy. Anyone we'd be willing to raft with also has fenders. The ball is the best thing we have used to protect the dock side bow when docking but the fenders tied to fore and aft cleats do a pretty good job.

I regularly (always) use two large round fenders when launching and retrieving the boat: one is hung on the cleat outside the helm window (or the opposite window, but I prefer the helm side as it is more convenient when single-handling); the other I hang near the rear of the boat.

I have found that the rear cleat is too far back, allowing the fender to be pushed behind the transom. So I wrap the rearward fender around the base of one of my downriggers, which are located near the back of the cockpit. That location works well.

At the launch, before pulling away from the dock, as I untie my lines from the dock cleats I also undo the rear fender and throw it into the transom area in front of the OBs (which is where I store these two primary fenders). Then, once underway, I pull the front fender through the helm window and stand it alongside the hull below the throttle controls (it fits there perfectly, where it is out of the way but readily available).

I also carry in the boat (stored in the cockpit beneath the transom, between the gas tanks) three more fenders for use if and when needed. One can be placed mid-ships (hung from a I cleat I added inside the cockpit just behind the bulkhead), a second hung off the rear cleat, and a third far forward hung off the bowrail.

I also "made up" a pair of fender boards, which I hang when cruising canals. I have also rigged up a way of leaving as many as four fenders in place while running, by pulling them up leaving them. (Again, this comes in handy when canalling.)

Photos are available in my album, esp. the sub-album "Other Projects."

We use two rather large HTM fenders. With the HTM style we can rig them several different ways depending on the need. The two large fenders work very well for us on the Erie Canal, both in the locks and mooring next to the high walls in many of the towns.

I must be an odd ball but I carry 3 fenders for the 22. There's only about 3 good places to hang them per side anyway. I don't want to deal finding room for extra fenders and never found a need for anymore. I have one rigged to a plastic clip that hangs from the bulkhead hand grip. If it turns out I need them all on the other side it's quick to change them all. Everyone has their own system though. I would start with a minimum. You can always buy more.

I was looking over the net and found some HTM Fenders - they are the round cylindrical shaped? Yes?

What size HTM do you use? I'd like to find one that works for everything. Instead of carrying a few of each kind.

Anyone have a good source ($$) for fenders? Thanks everyone. Our delivery date is set for the 26th provided all goes well. The boat is getting the camper back. Very exciting!!

To your first question: YES.

Mine are the 8" X 25": seem plenty large enough for the CD-22.

Can be slung horizontally, using the hole-in-the-middle OR hung vertically.
