Etec 90 prop?

Anyone running the Etec know the best prop to use? I am only able to get the boat to 4200 rpms and I am thinking it's either this or a fuel issue.

Is your speed also low? Sometimes a tach will read low if the ground is not good. From my experience most of the props used have a pitch of 15"to17", and a diameter of about 13 1/4. Ron

Wandering Sagebrush--is your 4200 and 22 mph WOT? This is a good cruising speed for a C Dory 22, but not WOT. The boats should be somewhere at 5500 and close to 30 mph at WOT.

bshillam, I suspect that it is prop--many of the engines are propped for bass boats etc. What is the prop pitch?

Barnacles on the bottom or running gear can affect speed more than you would think (or at least, more than I would have thought).

I am hoping I just picked up some water as I ran the tank down to practically nothing. I'll have the racor and fuel filter changed, hopefully solving it. The fuel is probably two years old as the engine was bought new in 2009 and had 30 hours on it. My guess is that the old owner didn't fill it prior to me purchasing.
After reading your other threads, I suspect it is the fuel/ethanol/water problem. It may have affected the injectors from your post on the trip....

I am hoping that's not the case.were having to replace just about everything from the canvas to the nav lights on this boat....may a prayer to the boat Gods.
   Ooops! No, that is cruise, not WOT. I must learn to read the entire thread....

for the etec you want to fall at WOT at 5-5200 rpm for this motor.
what prop are you running right now? i would assume you are over propped. etec come with a 17 on them.
my etec on my olympic i had to run a 15. I have not taken out boat out with this motor yet but i am guessing that the 15 will be suited. you can raise the motor up a bolt hole to get rpm up and trim the motor as well.

if you have more etec questions check out the etecownersgroup.com a lot of info and help there for these motors.

I suggest that all boaters carry an extra (Or two) fuel filter, plus the tools to change them out (including a strap wrench or chain vise grips to get the stubborn filter off. Also most outboards have a secondary water separation filter somewhere under the cowling. I don't know exactly were it is on the E-Tec, but have checed them on Hondas, Suzuki, and Yahama outboards.

agreed thataway especially a way to get the filter off. on the etec its under the cowling and is hard to miss sits on the starboard side and is held on with a zip tie of all things. supper easy to swap out

Perhaps you should get some new spark plugs, and before putting them in, check the compression. You may not be getting full power from the engine. The e-tec 90 should push your boat faster and easier than the original 70HP that was on the earlier c-dories. The 70 would push them nearly 30 mph. Ron

There's a c-dory 22 owner on etecownersgroup who was running a 15" aluminum and seeing 4900rpm at WOT. I would suggest a 13" stainless - evinrude has several blade designs in their stainless line which produce very different results for the same pitch. A good dealer will let you exchange an undamaged stainless prop.

Before you do anything though, I would strongly suggest having the rigging checked over by an authorized dealer. You will be wasting time with prop selection otherwise.
