Daydream's Great Loop Blog!

Missed you by a couple days - we just rolled into New York State yesterday afternoon, and are now in an RV park for a week (off the road for this holiday week) not too far from the Erie Canal. We made our route for today cross the canal a time or two so we could reminisce. Looking forward to land exploring this area (lots of wineries).

Absolutely beautiful today, but the weather weasels are talking about a good chance of rain this next week. Hope it will be dryer on your side of the lake! Enjoy the T/S.

Sorry we missed you! We are in Trenton, Ont., arrived today. There are a lot of Loopers here, and tonight we had a bona fide "docktail" hour, with Kim Russo, the Executive Director of America's Great Loop Cruisers Association, in attendance. We originally booked two nights, but extended to four so we could be here for Canada Day fireworks. We think we will extend further if we can so we will miss the hordes of Canadians returning from the Canada Day weekend excursions on the T-S! In the next couple of days I will bike to Lock 1 and get our free lock pass and buy the seasonal moorage pass - we will no doubt be on the T-S long enough to pass the break-even point!

So far all is well, despite some morning fog, some days lost to thunderstorms and some unexpected heat. They have spent a lot of time anchored out, but occasionally they tie up at marinas (Daydream is at the Charleston City Marina in the above picture), where Pat says it is often the smallest boat: “It’s the VW camper van of boats.” But they’ve been cruising at 16-18 knots, and expect to complete the Loop in eight months.

Hi Pattie & Pat,

I enjoy reading each day's adventures on your cruise. You amaze me with your relaxed attitude with no concern to get to the next waypoint and rather enjoy where you are. The perfect way to travel.

I'm hoping to start a T-S cruise from Trenton this Aug. Does this marina have a trailer launch ramp?

Rick, glad you are enjoying the blog! There is a boat ramp right next to where we are docked here. Not sure about the details of parking and so forth, but it is close to the City of West Quinte City Hall, here is a map. You can probably contact the City of West Quinte for information, they also own and operate the Trent Port Marina.

I think having you and Capt. Jim on the same side of the continent is causing some kind of force field that is causing it to rain on you. Next thing you know Jim will be seeing F/D Dolphins cruising up the roadway.

Hate to rub it, in but way up here in PNW it's 70F , sunny, calm and looks like being that way for another week.

Actually quite jealous of both your adventures :-)

Keep the blogs a coming (and keep the damned rain over there)

Leave me outta this, Merv - New York State was already up to their armpits in rain before we got here. I feel for these folks. If you've been reading our blog, you are aware of the communities that have been hammered, hoping that sandbags will keep Lake Ontario at bay. We have gotten out each of the past couple days, armed with raincoats and umbrellas, and have even had short bits of sunshine each day... I think you folks in the PNW call this phenomenon: sunbreaks. :twisted:

Not that I believe them, but the weather weasels are predicting some sunshine for the holiday weekend.

We are seeing some of the Erie Canal area land sights this week, heading for the Thousand Islands area next week, then working our way towards Maine. Mixing it up with some dry camping (like anchoring out) and RV parks (think: marina). It has been a long time since we've land traveled in the summer, and we are enjoying the experience. Little Izzy is her usual champ self with the traveling.

With the holiday weekend, we did get a reservation for this week, and have been day-tripping the area with the SUV.

Oh, and using the a/c most days. 8) Until this week.

Pat and Patty's take on the loop has been interesting. I wouldn't be blaming them for the rain, either. Just keep a sunny attitude and enjoy the experience.

Having lived for quite a while on the "other" coast we know what you mean. The last year we lived in CT I think we had 19 snow storms. At least you don't have to shovel rain.

Can't wait to read your take on Maine. If you like it we will sell you a piece :-)

Pat, is your projected route shown anywhere ?? Having great fun looking for you on Google Earth and imagining trying to emulate your Baxter antics with two "Aussies" in tow.

Merv and Kathy, glad you are enjoying the blog!

I did not make a route map, the closest thing to it would be in our very first blog post, where I put Capt. John's Great Loop map. Just run your finger along the Erie Canal to the Oswego Canal and ignore the Champlain Canal, and that is pretty much our route!
