Camper Back on Cdory 22

Hi,

About to order a Camper Back from King Canvas (Seattle). I have a Roberts Blue factory color 2010 (light gray) striped boat. Am told the interior is called Charcoal Tweed and we can get the top in the same color. Before I make the order - am I correct, and is this the standard colors? Any other recommendations/ideas?

Tom

Yeah. I recommend you compare King with Oyster Cr canvas in Bellingham before ordering. Check out the photos in my album.

Make sure you know what features you want with your camper back. For example, how it attaches to the cabin, and whether or not it will have a top zipper to let you easily step down into the boat when at a dock.

I have had two King Canvas camper backs--one of the current 22 and one on the 25. If I was to order one I would be very specific about what you want--weight of vinyl, how the windows open etc. I personally feel that some canvas workers can make a better camper back. I suspect that if you get someone to work with you, that you can get a decent product out of King. (Issues, lighter vinyl, edges not hot knifed or bound, inadequate reinforcement, some corners leak, etc).

@ C-Hawk,

I like that your canvas cover continues aft to the stern. One of these days, when my extension is complete, I hope to have canvas done in a similar way. I thought that I'd like to have the aft window zip out and lift up to accommodate a couple of poles so that I could cover the engines in case they needed work during inclement weather.

This winter I replaced the original King Canvas that came with my boat with a custom top that is vastly more to my liking. You can look at photos in my albums "Carpy".
It is a big investment and I would seriously recomend looking into all the options.

My hardware is mounted inside the cockpit, which means the roof edge is even with the inside of the cockpit. So if side curtains are not installed rain collected across the whole top falls inside boat and must be pumped out. If this one ever wears out I'll get a new one with the top just a little wider so the rain falls outside the boat.

Also, don't let them leave off a zipper just behind the cabin so you can create an opening for stepping to the dock.

Hi,

Thanks for all of the advice. Called Dave from King Canvas with your questions;

Hot-knifed and bound edges
Good entrance zippers/strategy - all panels zip out
Mounted on gunnel (vice inside) to keep water reasonably out over edges without side panels
Goes as far back as I want it to (at aft bulkhead just prior to lazarettes)
30 mil vinyl - ostensibly good balance between supple-ness and strength (so you can fold it easier for storage)

So I am going to go for it!

Thanks again,

Tom

You will find the camperback gives you a lot more liveability on the boat. Just one note about storage: folding can be damaging to the eisenglass. We store our camperback rolled. We put a towel or old blanket pieces between each piece of eisenglass, all stacked; then roll that up and put it in a Sunbrella bag that Joan made.

Good luck with the project. Post some photos when completed.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

We picked up a couple of those foam exercise noodles from a sporting goods store and roll our cover pieces around them for storage. They tuck nice right up in the V berth.

You will love a full camper back on these boats. We bought our boat last April and towed it immediately to the canvas shop and left it for a full camper back treatment before we even took it home. For those who complain about the small cabin and well deck of the CD, the camper back brings it all together into a nice unified space when docked or at anchor. Pricey, but doubles the utility of our 22 cruiser. The only mistake we made was not having blackout curtains installed along with the bug screen and "glass." But, we will take care of that this month with some velcro'ed separate black out covers.
