C-Dory Value?

Just got my annual boat registration notice. According to Commonwealth of Kentucky, my boat is worth $551. I love it... I just hope they don't find the for-sale column on this site... :roll:
 
Amen, bro! If you ever decide to sell for what the Commonwealth deems is the "value," I want to be first in line!

For registration here in MT they charge us based on the length of the boat regardless of the year or value. A boat worth $500.00 cost the same to register as one costing $150,000.00, if both the same length. Fortunately the boat and trailer is a onetime registration and runs around $300 for a 22 and $90 for the trailer. I wonder how that compares with other states.

Well, my bill this year is $14.27 - tax, $23.00 - registration, and $6.00 fee for a total of $43.27. I have no idea how they figure the value. I just checked NADA and their retail values range from $2,735-$3,025.

Don't ask, don't tell... except here. :wink:

As states' tax revenue plummets due to decreasing real estate values, I would expect them to try to help make it up in other areas, like vehicles and boats. This is a real good time to not discuss how well these boats hold their value.
 
Many states have a personal property tax, as well as the registration fee. For example Calif. is 3% of the assessed evaluation (in in the Case of the C Dory 25, it was twice what I paid for it). Florida has a fixed fee for each size range of boat. All registration fees were doubled last year, due to the economic situation in the state. I am sure that once increased it will not revert. 16 to 25 feet is $35.50 a year. There are no personal property taxes in Florida.
 
It is for this reason (and that I got my Boat US annual membership for half price this year), that I joined the "Recreational Boaters Association of Washington" (Membership for both was what the Boat US would have cost.

Here is an excerpt from their March news letter:

"Our third legislative issue was primarily an educational effort. In the face of the current mismatch between state tax revenues and state spending, we realized that a formal effort to repeal the vessel excise tax this year was doomed at the starting gate. We used part of our time with the legislators to educate them to the inequities of the current excise tax system, and found legislators from both parties frequently surprised that boaters are carrying such a disproportionate excise tax load. Our efforts to inform the legislature will expedite the process of repealing this tax when budget realities allow."

RBAW has recently been doing a comparison ad, showing a $1.5M helicopter and a $300 boat. Both pay the same excise tax. They are actively working on rectifying that with the state. There is a preponderance of tax burden on the boaters in this state, and this needs correction. Yes the state has a huge deficit, but the RVer's, the general aviation pilot/owners and should certainly be paying in proportion to the boat owners.

Some of your yacht clubs already belong. An individual membership is about what you would pay fora dinner out, and helps get some voice into the state legislature.

Long ago, here in Florida if you owned a house for a long time the value on the tax rolls stayed at about what you paid for it no matter what the increase in real estate prices. Every year my mother would go bananas when the property appraiser statement would come and it showed the very low value for the house. Every year my Dad would have to tell this was a good thing. May she rest in peace.
 
Harvey, due to the current budget crisis in the state, I would suspect the "powers to be" will increase the excise tax on the aircraft rather than decrease the excise tax on the boats. Then it will be deemed equitable..... :roll: .

Dave, you are probably right, and if so OK, at least it will be equatable. As it is you and I ar supporting a whole lot of airport subsidy, or something else, while the AOPA,(Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association), is laughing all the way home from the registration office.

When the state starts collecting that "equitable excise tax" on the aircraft owners and they find out the boaters "yelled foul" on the process, there are going to be a lot of pilots flushing their toilets as they fly over the boaters cruising below..... :roll:

Heads up to Washington state boaters. No more registration renewal reminders for our boats. They are all due at the, first of June, avoid the rush and spend your tax refund on your favorite toy. 8) 8)

So... Back to C-Dory Value >>>> I have need to find a value for my boat. No I am not selling it, some #%*/@@$$$ lawyer, (No it isn't Pat --He is one of the good ones) wants to know the value to establish it as an asset. Now to me it is worth what I paid, but for this purpose, NADA or less would work for me. Looking around in the real world boat sales i ran across a dealership in NC that is pretty proud (and rightly so) of what they have. Check this (sorry l o n g Link:)

Don't know if that will even work, but if so, It's for a 05 and an 06 in the $40+ catagory. Just goes to show you, the value is what you can get.

I am currently looking at a 1990 22 foot Cruiser that has a newer 4 stroke 115 Yamaha for power, full electronics including 16 mile radar, shrimp pot puller, wallas stove. It looks to be in great shape but the asking price is 27,500. Is that a reasonable price for this year boat? Any help is appreciated! Thanks from a future C-Dory owner.

As for that particular boat, in the lower 48, the price would be too high. Up there, with no shipping, etc to deal with, it may not be depending on the condition of the boat and the hours on the engine.

I am going to disagree with Charlie--the $27,000 may reflect a newer 115 Yahama 4 stroke--and electronics. The boats have tended to hold the initial cost value--and a new 1990 would have been somewhere in the 20 to 25 K range--but add in the new motor and electronics it brings the value up (I assume that there is also a trailer--if not subtract at least 2K.)

Of course I would negotiate the price and see what you can do.
 
You may well be right Bob. It's worth what you can get for it. I sold a '94 22 with twin Honda 45's on it. They were '95's but only had 250 hours on them. Also had Radar/chartplotter/VHF/Depth, etc, etc. and a trailer for $19.5K. The buyer got a bargain!
