C Brats YouTube Channel

Brats,
We should make a C Brats YouTube channel. We could all add videos and have an awesome channel. I feel that this channel would help to promote the C-Dory brand, C-Brats forum and make it easier for all of us to upload/view our videos.

What do the mods and the Brats think? It'd be so much easier if we had a consolidated channel.....BTW, it's free to make a YouTube channel.

Thoughts??

Well, I for one love the idea! I'd be interested in both viewing the videos and contributing. BUT, with YouTube, I can barely remember how to find my own channel and upload videos, let alone upload to a shared channel (how does that work anyway, do all the members need to know the password in order to upload videos to the channel?).

I used to use YouTube and upload videos regularly but gave up on it a couple of years ago when they somehow merged it with your Google account, and now I find it too frustrating to bother with.... (I'm not very tech savvy...and might also be the last person on Earth without a Facebook account).

But I like the idea if it won't be too complicated!

Neither Merry nor I are on Facebook. We don't even have smart phones but I finally got used to the things Google did to ruin YouTube. I still have all my videos there. Perhaps there is a way to merge them onto a C-Brats page.

Vimeo is another option for videos and I like FB and text a lot but rarely use Instagram.... another person who didnt grow up with computers but embraced new technology- LOL

A Vimeo Plus membership, which bumps up storage quite a bit from Basic, will cost users $59.95/year, which really isn't a huge hit to your wallet. However, a PRO membership packs a wallop, even with a lot more storage and full HD playback, at $199/year.

but if a few folks kick in ten bucks then problem solved

Vimeo has no ads and YouTube they are everywhere... so annoying

No facebook here, either. Never twittered. I did get a smart phone (but I don't really understand the "smart" feature). In fact, I've had three phones in the past several months. Turns out that they don't like salt water immersion. If they are so smart, why aren't they waterproof?

I've thought about trying to load a little video clip in the C Brats picture album section. I assume that it wouldn't work, but I have never got around to trying. The only reason that I have short video clips instead of pictures is because I pushed the wrong button (icon?) on my smart phone.

Now that it has been mentioned, I think a C-Brats page on Facebook would also be a great idea. I realize many don't use FB, but there are many of us that do. Just another way for C-brats to socialize. Colby

People are mentioning Facebook, because it is easier to use than U tube. But many have not embraced the technology. I happen to be "Sam Jones" on Facebook--I consider it too easy to access for others using my real name, and have security concerns.

I have never posted a U tube, although my daughter and her family has a "channel".

I think it is a good idea, but probably will stick to plain photographs.

I don't have any idea how others feel about security issues, but it seems to be that U tube offers even less security--Don't know if it can be restricted to members only.

Bob, I agree cyber security is a concern, but not enough that I feel threatened in using my name. (Same here with C-brats.) But I respect others that feel they need more security due to their profession or for other reasons. I do however set my privacy at a level I can live with. Anyone that wants to find me can simply type in my name and recognize my profile photo. But that's about as far as they'll get on my FB page without friending me. If I know someone, I will usually accept a friend request. But the way I look at it, would I invite this person into my home and do I have something in common with them? :) I recognize there are different uses for social media, just as there are for forums such as this and youtube. I enjoy staying in touch with friends and family and facebook has allowed a tremendous medium for doing that. While I don't use youtube to post to, I have gone to the site to see videos posted by others. And I'm not aware of being able to post videos to C-Brats, so I could see a practical reason to have a C-Brat youtube channel. Colby

No Face Book account here either, Or Twitter, or Snapchat or Instagram or ... :?:

I am totally surprised that I am not the only one that does not have a Face Book (or as I have heard it referred to Face Plant) account.

I just saw an investigative news report about people using social media. This was studying paid employees, on the clock, at the job, and how they were using their phones, or on their work computers. Some were actually on "Social Media" up to 2 hours out of an 8 hour shift. These were employees who were being paid for productivity, not personal promotion or communication duties.

   :thdown :thdown :thdown :thdown :thdown :thdown

I know, I had an employee that I had to deal with over that same issue. Couldn't believe I just couldn't understand the need to check in on Face Book every 10 to 15 minutes. We have become a nation of addicts.... well....

And I only do C-BRATS once or twice a day. And I'm different, cause you all are family  And I love it here, and you all are great.

So back to the regularly scheduled question...

I don't know much about it but I think I can sure see the advantage of having a C-Dory Channel and It appears there is already a C-BRAT FaceBook page. Don't know how that works, but....

I think it would be great to have all the C-Dory videos in one place, and it might be an advantage to the C-Dory builders, who might just want to kick in the extra fee for the Pro channel, that"s a mighty small fee for a national advertising campaign.

So, for my part I would say YES but if there are security concerns they need to be addressed by someone who knows what they are doing.

The security risk is minimal. It's no different than when I post my phone number and other personal on here (c brats). It's a public forum and anyone can access it. But we could make the YouTube channel private if that's what everyone wants to do....

First of all, we need some input from the bosses!

Tyboo and DaNag, Whattya think?

Wouldn't making it private (ha, like there is really anything like Private on the I-net), defeat the purpose, at least as far as "advertising" purposes go?

For some of us, it might help to have a bit of an explanation as to how it works, and the pros and cons of private vs public.

Thanks Jason, I know you are trying, and I kind of went through the same thing with the CBRATS Group Call MMSI Number.

It took some time and effort, but it was fun and I think it is working.

Yes, a YouTube channel, a Facebook page and a Group MMSI are all useful 21st century ideas. In fact if we don't do them, we'll show ourselves to be more and more out of step with the world. (I know, maybe you like that idea....)

Sure, it's generational. I sympathize ... a little. I'm 70 myself. But nobody now in college ever saw a world without cell phones. Nobody under 35 can imagine a world without computers. More than half of those under 27 are smartphone-only and will never need a landline into their house or apartment. So unless we want to adopt the motto "C-Dory: Boats for Geezers," it's time to offer these platforms to those who use them every day of their lives and consider them essential for every activity they do.

All our charts are digital now. So's the weather. The Coast Guard wants you to carry their app on your phone. GPS, AIS, DSC, NMEA, Active Captain -- the list goes on and on. If you take boating seriously you may not like to use use digital things, but you can't say they don't matter.

Richard, You are sooooo right. Kind of like hitting the nail on the head with a sledge hammer. Ouch, I know you are right, and you only listed a minuscule portion of the alphabet soup we all know and love IF.... we admit it.

You really put it in a nice way, it may be a bit of a reminder that we(I) need to move along in the progression of modernization (is there such a work as technization or dititalization). I may not be smart enough ot set up the u-tube, but I might be able to learn it later.

Again, I think it's a good idea, and I don't want to be a "geezer boater"

One thing I've noticed on other forums when they started splitting off into other venues is that they ended up losing steam and becoming fragmented. I like that I can come here for C-Brat/C-Dory info. I don't do Facebook, so anything that gets posted there I won't see (bummer for me).

On the videos: I don't have a "dog" in this one as I don't post videos and I do watch them on youtube and vimeo. BUT, from what I have seen, quite a few people who post videos like to have them on their own channel. And oftentimes when there is a video to go with a thread or topic, those people will simply post a link here. Then it can be to youtube or vimeo, whatever the filmmakers preference is.

OTOH, to specifically find videos, I've gone to youtube and Vimeo and just typed "C-Dory" into the search. Then I can see C-Dory videos from various people's channels.

So my "vote" would be to keep C-Brats as-is. This isn't because I'm not modern, but more because I've seen some favorite forums weaken after this sort of action. Bummer. But I'd still encourage folks to link to videos from posts on any topic (such as Jay and Jo-Lee do). I'd personally rather not do Facebook, because well, I'm not a member; but also because then if someone posts about a meet up, do they do it here, too? Cross-post all sign up lists? It seems unmanageable (and plus who would manage it).

I like what Tyboo and DaNag do for use here (and have done for over a decade), so I'd like to do everything possible to keep it strong, and keep it as "the" C-Dory place. (Now if they didn't allow us to link videos here I'd feel differently.)

I sort of agree with the last two posts. I very much like this C-Brats site as it is, and I would hope no one is suggesting that we move from here to other media. However, there are many that would like to use the other media, and that's where it might come in useful. Many already use you-tube and just link to it. And many already use Facebook, and as I just learned, there is already a group listing for that. MMSI and DSC is another item that can be used beneficially. However, yes one can have too much of a good thing. It's great to use all this stuff as an aid in communications. But as soon as it becomes "the subject" or the purpose, rather than the tool, it becomes a disadvantage. (I know this too well from some earlier volunteer work in our local schools when it seemed like the computers were becoming more of the subject, than the tool to help kids learn!) And like smart phones, if all one wants their phone for is to make a few phone calls to a few people, there is nothing wrong with the old rotary phone. (No one was ever heard saying, can you hear me now... lol) No one has to use the group MMSI, but if they chose to do so, it just opens up another means for communication. Just as no one has to go to youtube, but it does offer a medium for posting video. (SO does Facebook for that matter.) Just my ramblings.... Colby

The mode of discourse is so different on Facebook I would not favor it for the kind of longer, more thoughtful discussions we have here.

FB is tailored for snippets. And editing is as cumbersome as a pickle in heat.

Stick to this.

I have a FB account, and use it extensively, but for very different purposes.
