Broughton Cruising, Does it get any better?

Not Roger here, but the crew of Sea Pal is glad you and Kathy got home safely. We assume that Jim & Jan of Castaway has also returned safely. We sure wish you 4 were out with us still !!

Tues. & Wed. nights we were back at wonderful Jennis Bay and had Allison's Cajun dinner !! Janet & Betsy did kitchen duty in the Cookhouse Tuesday afternoon which made the meal even more special. Roger & Bob spent their afternoon helping to dock boats.

In leaving Jennis Bay yesterday we picked up a nice pot of prawns that we took with us to our anchorage at Claydon Bay off Grappler Sound. Grilled 'em and they were fabulous.

Tonight we're back at Greenway Sound Marina and cooked our 4 huge crabs we got at Claydon Bay. Had to throw back 5 big ones !! We're in the groove now !!

Dreamer has been off with Second Love ( that has an interesting note to it ) for a couple of days but we'll probably be catching up with each other tomorrow.

Sunday & Monday nights we were anchored out at the very end of Drury Inlet -Frequent Sea was there on Sun. also. They saw 2 black bears the day they left. When we boated down the shore looking for the bear ( which we didn't see) and we saw these cat legs strolling under the brush and pretty soon this gorgeous cougar came out on the rocks. We watched it for 20 minutes or so from about a 50 yd. distance. As we said, wish you were still here !!

Hi Bob & Betsy,
You are are making us jealous!!!

Be warned it is quite a culture shock getting back to "civilization" and noise.

We met yet another couple from Bend at Lagoon. What is it with that place that everyone leaves for the Summer
Take care and have fun. I will post some pictures when I have cleaned the boat.

Merv & Kathy

Hi Merv & Kathy,

Glad you're home safe and adjusting to civilized life again!

Speaking of civilized. I heard an owner of a 115' Yacht accept a dinner invitation aboard a 156' yacht today. "I'll tell Robert (the chef) we'll be dining off the boat tonight" he replied. He probably has storage lockers bigger than a C-Dory!

Sea Pal and Dreamer are back in Greenway Sound Marina tonight and shared cocktails and crab based snacks at the appropriate 1700 hours. Did a load of laundry that should allow us to be well and freshly dressed until we leave on July 25. That's pretty civilized in my book.

We did get a call today from Dave on Rain Coast, a CD-22. They're heading our way and may make contact in a few days.

Tomorrow we may try Simoom Sound for a few days at anchor.

Having traveled with you, we know you go "civilized." We are enjoying your travel reports, and wish we were out there crossing wakes with you.

I told Joan that we'll be dining out of the toy hauler tonight... we'll take the motorcycle to Culver's for fried cheese curds and ice cream. No need to alert the staff; according to Molly, we are the staff.

Keep the reports coming!

Our best to you, Janet, Betsy and Bob,
Jim & Joan

Just posted a few photos of the Broughtons Cruise in a sub album under Kingfisher.
More will follow but some things will stay in the Broughtons!! (Including one Prawn trap)

Merv & Kathy

Peter,

Lyle and Shelley on Bess-C, and Diana and I on Constant Craving are planning on being there for the first couple of weeks of Sept. I think that Lyle and Shelley may be up at the very end of August.

Keep in touch and we will try and rendezvous.

Steve

Hi Jim & Joan,

We wish you were here too. We've been out a month as of today and 10 days to go.

We're back at Pierre's tonight for Italian Night. A great meal of Ceasar Salad, Pasta, Lasagna, Garlic Bread and Fruit Cobbler.

We've been anchoring in some awesome places, Thief Island, Actaeon Sound, Simoom Sound, Sutherland Bay and Turnbull Cove. All have awesome views, Eagles hunting fish or Bears prowling the shore.

Our advice to anyone contemplating a trip to the Broughtons...

Just Do It!

Roger and Janet, your posts make me smile... you know how to get to this crowd: food and great scenery!

With all the motorcycling we've been doing, it brings to mind the phrase: "Live to ride, ride to live." (The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is approaching fast, and Joan wants to be here for it, btw.) Maybe we can get t-shirts made up that read: "Cruise to eat, eat to cruise." :D

We'll all be looking forward to 10 more days of fun updates. Keep 'em coming!

Best wishes,
Jim & Joan

Roger, we too are enjoying your experience vicariously! Some kind of stay more that just "passing through" in the Brougtons is definitely on our "must do" list! Out a month with 10 days to go, wow...envious for sure. I feel extravagant taking a week for the Gulf Islands and two weeks for Lake Powell...wish you would stick a few photos of that gorgeous scenery into your posts!

Roger, Might want to just stay up there for a while. Not sure about the top of Bell Hill, think it's all gone, Fog up there, last three days coming in to work at 06. Enjoy your time there and thanks for the updates and pix.

How has the weather been? When we left a week ago, it had been cold and rainy often. It was a whole different world when we got to Desolation sound--70 degree water, air temp in the 80's--may be just a fluke--hope that you had that good weather up there!

We will come back next year, to explore some of the places we missed this year. There was a steady stream of boats heading that way in Campbell River.

I think that there is probably a trade off--with the cooler weather and less crowds, vs the more boaters and hopefully better weather. As one goes only a few miles on this coast, the micro climate can change dramatically!

Definately a place to see and not be missed!

Anyone heading back down south through the islands, along Vancouver Island, or around in the Sound, keep an eye out for the Canoe Journey to Cowichan in progress now through July 26. Single, or maybe many Indian Canoes being paddled from as far away as the North end of Vancouver Island and coming down the outside, headed to Cowichan between Nanimo and Victoria on the island east side. This is an annual event and getting bigger. Paddling up to 40 foot canoes in open water like their forefathers did. Spectacular feats and spectacular sights.

Bob,

Weather has been mixed. One night of fierce wind about 10 days ago. It missed us as we were tucked into a tiny protected cove. Robbie at Shawl bay was hurt seriously when his head slammed into the helm of his water taxi close to home in the bad weather.

We've had some beautiful days too. A little breezy now as I type at Lagoon Cove in a Tee shirt but very nice. It varies throughout the day and from day to day.

If anyone is familiar with Bravo, the dog at Jennis Bay, he was attacked by a wolf and will be a couple of months in recovery minus one eye.

We're winding this one down and will head to Alert Bay and then Telegraph Cove in a few days. First, there are lots of big Prawns and Crab to harvest here!

Bess-C,
Thanks for the warm welcome. I almost forgot what it was like to have to outfit a new boat LOL. I knew, I should have grabed more stuff of the old 32 bayliner . The boat is on the northside barge between 32 an 34. I should be there most of saturday if you are in town and wanna meet up.

Two weeks and im headed up

Last I heard about Robbie from Loren was on 7/7/08

"He has 8 stitches in his face where he hit the dash, and has sore ribs.He is going for x rays right now.So far,I think he is going to be all right."

I wonder if Robbie got banged up taking the gal with the possiable shoulder injury to Port McNeil? He was leaving on the AM of the 4th and was going to stay with her and bring her and the boat's skipper back after X ray? Of course my question is did he have the C Dory or the faster and heavier deep V boat when he was hurt? He uses both boats as water taxis.

Thanks for the update on the weather and folks.. Wow--about the wolf attack. The dog seemed pretty savey and was the "bear prevention dog".

In Friday Harbor this AM we had moderate fog, plus a heavy marine layer, didn't burn off until later this PM. Definately cooler in the San Juans, this week , than in the Campbell river area.

I hear he will be back tomorrow or the following day picks of the new boat will be up hopefully tomorrow. Here are a few i took in June

For the greater amusement of the intrepid C-brats who were on this trip.

Remember the red face of he who threw a prawn trap into 400 ft of water and watched the double buoy sink beneath the calm waters of Kwatsi Bay ??

Remember the valiant efforts of Roger to find it at the next low tide??

Just got a call from Anca, they found it on today's low tide. Just the tip of the flag showing and prawns in the pot. !!!

Wonderful people that they are they wanted to send back to us but I told them to keep it there, use it and we will pick it up next time around.

A great PS to a great trip.

Merv & Kathy

Just heard form Robbie

Hey bro im ok sore but all is good lol I have to walk around with a cane but in a few weeks I hope its gone so sorta taking it easy but still working anyways gota crash so talk to u later ribs are ok just bruised

Well, we're about to wind this trip down. Sea Pal and Dreamer are tied up snug tonight in Alert Bay. We made the trip from Pott's Lagoon this AM at 7:00-8:00 averaging 21 kts. We had a nice dinner out, a treat for Betsy & Janet who have created wonderful meals out of very small refrigerators.

We'll go to Telegraph Cove tomorrow and retrieve the boats about 3:00 PM as the tide comes in. After a little trailer maintenance and dinner at Telegraph Cove Resort, we'll head out in the early AM hoping to make the 7:30 coho run to Port Angeles.

This trip has been a confirmation that 5-6 weeks is entirely doable in a 25' boat. We need fresh water after 2 days at anchor and extra water jugs would extend that. The Honda 2000ei generator is capable of charging batteries, heating water and making coffee, just not at the same time!

Moisture in the boat is a problem and I can't wait to install a solar powered vent in the head and maybe one over the stove.

We had such a good time cruising with Jim and Jan on Cast Away, Merv and Kathy on Kingfisher II and Bob and Betsy on Sea Pal who were with us from start to finish. Getting to know these C-Brats better was just icing on the cake.

We can't say enough about these waters. We're starting to plan for next year!

Pretty much our experience too, except the 5-6 week part! Very envious about that, we never have been able to be out that long, 2 weeks has been it for us. But we too feel we have everything we really need in 25 feet to be warm, dry and comfortable in just about any conditions. Sometimes we think about a Nordic or something, but it just isn't necessary, we have a great boat and we have great times on it!

Since we have the Airhead, have been toying with the idea of using the area where the holding tank is (under the motorwell) for an additional fresh water tank. Used to be able to make the water last longer with the footpump on the 22, but we go through it fast with the pressurized water system.

We like our Honda 2000 too, but find that we don't run it much. Thought we would use a microwave, didn't...thought we would use a toaster oven...don't. Don't usually run it to power the water heater, we just heat water in a tea kettle for most hot water needs. But we don't leave the dock without it!

Let us all know about next year's dates! The Broughtons are for sure a place we would love to spend a couple of weeks at least!
