Broughton Cruising, Does it get any better?

Pierre has wedged 6 more boats in since we heard they were full! The #1 dock had a minor failure and had to have some plates replaced. A 100' dock with a 65' Northern marine Trawler and a 68' WesBay Son Ship at the far end were too much during the tidal flow. The trawler was moved and now all is well.

Another C-Dory tied up at Windsong Marina today, ei2 from Cortes Bay, all in very small letters.

A foto attached of Dreamer, Kingfisher II and Sea Pal at Jennis Bay, a delightful place.

What a joy! Our own C Brat Welcoming committee at Echo Bay. We are getting ready for the pig roast--and at 5 PM it is 79 outside and 76 inside the boat! There seems to have been some dis-imformation about the weather up here--and Roger set me straight. It has been very good.

We did have a little rain last night, and about an hour of dense fog this AM, but then the sun came out--and how beautiful! It was warm yesterday in Lagoon Cove---and warm today in Echo Bay. What wonderful cruising--some of the best in the world!

It sounds like everyone is having fun!

What kinds of internet connections are available in the Broughtons and if you have to pay, how much do they cost?

There are at least 4 "marinas" Which have satellite internet and these have free wi Fi.
We have also found free Wi Fi in a number of other marinas in the Gulf Islands. We have not signed onto the pay for service like BBX.

Yes, it is one big party. Sort of like each bay is trying to out do the other. Lots of Saturday Night and Tuesday night 'specials". For example at Echo Bay (Pierres) there is a list of "special activities" for each week during the summer. This includes a pig roast every Saturday and various themed nights. Probably Roger can outline better some of the other bay's activities, since he has been up here longer.

We had the C brat, Rossie, and Sequim contingent all together this evening for a fun dinner (Canada Day), and a quartet (Banjo, Mandolin, Guitar and Bass (cello optional). Sort of blue grass/folk/country--very good. Three girls and a guy. I believe that they were called the "Backbone Road".

Across the Bay at Windsong there was another gathering--which appeared to have more locals. The music was perhaps less "formal" but more dancing (or something).

Great bunch of people all having fun. There are some boats 130 feet long cruising the area, an amazing number of 50 to 65 foot boats, and then the rest of us!

Oh, by the way--it is about 60 degrees, but with the wind and fog, seems a bit colder at 10 PM.

The Sullivan Bay 4th of July Party is still going strong at 9:15 PM. The band is loud enough to hear every word 3 docks away on our boat. Great Fun! Good band, a great comedian, great burgers and salmon all contribute to a great day.

Lots of very large boats in today for the event, largest, a 115' Westport. The C-Dories stand out of course as the class act of the group!

We set prawn and crab traps this afternoon. We'll try to locate and retrieve them in the AM. Big tides and currents tend to rearrange things overnight.

On to Greenway Sound tomorrow for some of those provisions Dr. Bob mentioned.

Greenway Sound's 4th celebration was 8 sparklers provided by a Canadian (comic), who has a puppet duck and plays the kazoo. We tried the Star Spangled Banner, and mangled several other songs, including America the Beautiful and O Canada.. A quiet Rainy night, and Bob and Marie are recovering from the hike to the lake.

Largest Boat was Hobie Alter's Katie Sue (60') and during my tour I found out that Hobie loves the Tom Cats. He also agrees that that not deepening the hulls, and making the under wing deck more concave (gullwing) was a mistake. We discussed the essentials of wing deck clearance, even at displacement speeds.

So we will probably cross paths with Dreamer some time today.

Nice shot, Roger. Love the lines on Sea Pal, but there is some distraction in the background.

Kinda reminds me of the opening scene in SpaceBalls when the death star went on and on and on. Did that boat blot out the sun for Bob and Betsy?

We're all enjoying the reports and photo essays. Keep having fun and telling us about it! :D

Best wishes,
Jim & Joan

Thanks Jim,

Hope the rest of your Summer is more fun than the first few weeks. You could be here in a few days!

Here's Merv and Kathy's Rosborough Kingfisher II between a couple of somewhat larger though less classy boats.

We've swapped Marinas with Dr. Bob and are doing laundry and getting rid of garbage at the only place that will take it in the islands, Greenway Sound Marina. Tom told Bob on Sea Pal that his business is off to a slow start.

The owner of one of the float houses in Sullivan Bay brought in a 149 lb halibut today. It was caught just at the entrance to Drury inlet. So Marie is all for fishing tomarrow in that area.

There are about 15 boats left in Sullivan Bay today--they were still leaving as we pulled in at noon.

Of course--rain most of today. We did have a couple of hours of "happy hour" on the docks, but it got cold (by Florida standards) and wet at about 8:30 PM.

Roger,

Thanks for the beautiful pictures. Love that view up to the mountain. And All those wonderful looking boats, and there would be so much more room for them if the cruise liners didn't occupy so much dock space.

I missed this thread this week so I'm a bit behind. Grumpy, sorry you had to go back to Alert Bay, but hope the finger is fine now. Interesting tip about being "in route to AK"

You all sound like your having a great time. Thanks for the photos's and descriptions. take care and be safe, and see you all later

Today is the day when we leave the company of Dreamer and Sea Pal who have been wonderful companions, tour guides, cooks, trap pullers and story tellers for the last 10 days or so. We are heading from Greenway back to Lagoon, Sointula, Alert Bay and then Telegraph Cove before taking the long ride home.
Great memories and lots of pictures to process and post when we get home.

Nice to have met you Dr. Bob. If you had cought the hablibut we would have come back to Sullivan to help you eat it. Our group tally yesterday was one crab, 8 shrimp, 1 octopus and 3 small codfish ! A varied diet !!

I just joined the forums as I have just purchased my new 25 cruiser and will be heading up from the 1st to the 9th of August my parents have a home base in Shawl bay. It is awsome to see so many c-brats around the area that I enjoy spending all of my vacation in every year. Hope you are still around when I get up there this year. Be well and safe journeys.

Weather: I just looked at the forcast for this area--and it is a high of 16 C low of 13 C for the next 5 days, with mostly cloudy, and 3 days of 30% rain. One of the employees commented to me this AM "What is this, October?".
In contrast I looked at Cambell River, about 100 miles South--26 C highs and sunshine (but who trusts the weather forcasts). But the weather is definately colder up here (at least this year).

Water: Consider that most of the water supplies come from streams or lakes. In order to avoid Giardia (a parasite) one has to either filter the water to one micron, or a rolling boil for 2 minutes. Greenway Sound Restort, is the only place we have come to in the Broughton area which did NOT have a warning posted by Vancouver Health services that the water had to be boiled. Greenway sound filters to half a micron.

I note this not to discourage boaters, but to allow realistic considerations for this area. We carry an extra 6 gallon water tank, and use salt water for cooking and much of the washing. So once you have "good" water, use it sparingly and most of our boats tanks will have adequate water for between stops. On our larger boats we had water makers, but that is a bit of overkill for this area, especially if you have large tankage.

Hi Harvey,

How was the cruise? We'll miss Merv and Kathy as well as Jim and Jan who left way too soon.

Here's one of a pair of Bald Eagle lovebirds from Waddington Bay.

Diana and I have finally been able to pin down vacation time for her, and it looks like we are going to be heading to the Broughtons a few days before Labor Day. I know that Lyle and Shelly (Bess C) also have plans to be there at that time, so it looks like there is an impromptu get-together starting to materialize.

If anyone else is interested, or will still be in the area at that time, feel free to send me an email or PM.

I hope that everyone had a great and safe 4th.

Steve

Gimp,
Welcome to C-Dory World. We live in Yakima, but we keep our 25 in Anacortes. We've had our boat for five years and it's introduced us to some great areas and people. We love the Broughtons and have been there several times. We also really like Shawl Bay. Sounds like your family has a float house there. That should make a great base of operations for exploration with your new 25.

As noted above by Steve, we'll be back in the Broughtons for the first two weeks of September.
Lyle

Roger, Thanks for the pix, Great Eagle shot. Looks like there is a ton of activity up there, We are really missing out, I know, but did get a chance to go out and see a couple of tall ships. Hoping to do the same again on Tuesday. You have a great night and good times. thanks again for sharing the notes and photos,
Harvey

Roger,

Made it home last night after long drive from Telegraph, last minute ferry change, wild ride in the windstorm and making the mistake of trying Ron's shortcut straight through downtown Vancouver.
New Nexus lanes at Blaine leave approximately 1/2 inch to spare each side. Agent was so worried that I was about to take out his new overhang (Had no idea what the clearance was!!) that we went through in about 30 seconds with help of a "spotter".

Your truck and Bob's looked safe and sound at TC. Only new excitement was a large Westbay having an argument with a local about where he put his Bayliner Trophy tender.

Thanks once again for being excellent guides and friends (even if we do have a Rosborough !! )

Hope the wind storm didn't get to you.

Merv & kathy
