Boat US magazine Bill and El

Jeff Messmer told me they had done that research when he was with C-Dory, and they found that virtually EVERYONE who buys a C-Dory finds the C-Brats site before making the purchase decision...

We just received our copy in the mail today also. Great article and fabulous PR for C-Dory and the C-Brats site. It would be interesting to hear the results of a survey when folks first join the site if they were asked the question how they "found" the C-Brat site. Same questions could be asked and recorded when folks purchase new C-Dorys.

We found the site before we had our boat but not before we had made the decision. We learned about it when we were at the boat show. This site was a great place to spend time while we anticipated the arrival of our boat and we even found Ken on Blue C who Don had worked with for years. What a small world. We also read a lot on Bill and El's site because we had decided back then that we wanted to go to Alaska in our boat. They were an inspiration to us then and we had a great time cruising with them last week in the San Juans.

I was pleasantly surprised when I got my magazine this week.

great article and exposure for the C-Dory, C-Brats, and the "Halcyon" life style. Now I'm curious how many of the folks here belong to the Boat US organization. It is a way to put some emphasis on public recreational boating into local, state regional and federal politics. Take a look at the editorial on P-6 of the same magazine issue.

http://www.boatusmagazine.com/boatus/20110809#pg6

For the price of a couple meals out, the Boat US membership, has given me a part of that voice, and some discounts, plus a 50% discount on the Recreational Boaters of Washington membership which again, puts some voice into the state legislature.

Is it a big deal, no not just my membership. but if EVERY RECREATIONAL boater was a member it would be a BIG deal. And it has to start somewhere.

Very inspiring and motivating, reading this article reinforces what has been stated so many times on this site that owning a C-dory is more than just a passion, it's a lifestyle! :thup

The author of the article, Gary Kramer, is one fine fellow. We had a short cruise with the Kramers on the Mississippi River.

Thanks for the nice comments, folks. We have not had a chance to keep up with the C-Brats for the past few weeks since we have been cruising with family and friends in the San Juans. Still there, but with a little more time now. So can have a little time with our C-Brat 'family.'

El and Bill,

Glad to know you two are enjoying and sharing our PNW. It is a great place. You are an inspiration to me, and a reminder that I can get by with less. Thank you for your example.

Yo Harvey, I don't think it's about "getting by" with less. I think it's about "thriving" with less. HD Thoreau and the Fiero's are all about getting the clutter out so we can live easier and better. I found a great place to start was my garage 10 or so years ago. Get rid of stuff weekly it is a fun thing to do. I purge the boat monthly now, it is amazing the junk that can collect. George

George,

Really good advice, and I am getting there s l o w l y, probably much too, but still getting there. I have a cleanout date coming soon, and that will help.

Time to get back into the backpacking and canoe camping mode.

Simplify, sounds kind of like Semper Fi. Good news.

An inspiration? Just 6 years ago, we had good-paying careers and plenty of time off. We worked hard, and got to spend 4 months sailing and playing where it was warm when the snow flew up north. Then, I started checking into this C-Dory thing. Now, we wander around a lot... able to find only occasional seasonal work driving a cruise boat and in a marina in a spectacular setting. In another month, we will be unemployed again. Then what? Forced to wander around by boat or RV... having to go where the weather suits our clothes... just the two of us and a snuggly cat. A "fixed base" that we visit a couple months a year. What kind of a lifestyle is this? Happiness without the schedule of "50 on, 2 off"? Being forced to make decisions like "where do you want to go next?" or "should we revisit a place we enjoy or find someplace we haven't seen, yet?"

can you imagine having to give up running a snow blower in the winter and mowing grass all summer; staining the cedar siding on a big house? When we aren't in our very small house in the Tropical Tip, we have to live in the square footage of a 25' boat or a 35' RV with expanding walls. As you can imagine, our families are concerned for our welfare. No permanent land-based phone line. Our only TV reception has to come through a satellite, our internet from a cell tower... that's right - no cable TV, no DSL. We're lucky if we get mail once a month... and then it has to find us. No catalogs or junk mail?? It's been months since we were in a mall.

Thanks for the encouragement, Bill and El.

Best wishes,
Jim & Joan

Yeah, yeah, yeah, that and the frickie-dickie dolphins, Jimbo! We ENJOY the 355 days of crappy weather here, it makes the 10 days of good weather that much SWEETER!

Hi Folks,

A few weeks I was on a CGAux Patrol when my friend Ethan asked me if I got USBOAT Magazine. I told him that I did not renew the towing because I was not putting the boat in the water this year. Ethan then told me that there was an article about a couple who cruise on a C-dory like mime. My answer was, "That has to be El and Bill. I cruised with them on the Erie Canal with some other boats." Ethan's reply,"How did you know it was about them." My reply was,"There is only ONE couple BOATUS would write a story about in the C-Dory group."

I don't mean to cut anybody else short because I have met and cruised with many great people in the C-dory group. But their is only one "El and Bill."

Every year the Public TV stations in northern NY roll out the movie about the Erie Canal, staring none other than Bill Ferio. (My boat INN-THE-WATER even made that movie, along with the rest of our Flotilla.)

My wife was even interested in the article about Simplicity, Smiplicity, Smiplicity. My comment was "Bill was the guy who grabbed my phone and turned it off when I was in Medina NY when you kept calling me" (Damn leash).

Thanks Bill and El.

Good to hear from you Fred! Is the Inn still for sale? Hope the market looks up and you can move on soon! Be careful on comments like that about your First Mate! :hug :love :hug2

Stay safe!

I was packing up the boat in La Conner this last weekend when another boater asked me about the article. I said yes I know them and yes mine is also a c-dory just a bigger one. He got a shocked look in his eye. "you mean they spend months in a boat smaller then your?' Yes they do I say " have they been seen by a mental health professional?" which is the Seattle way of saying shrink. when I told them they have spent all most a year at a time in the boat he just shook his head mumbling something about self imposed Massacists or something and hurried off before being infected.

Thanks Bill and El for introducing me to the CDory line. Didn't know these boats even existed until this issue of Boat US was published. It was love at 1st sight, and now have my wife convinced the CD22 will make the perfect addition to our cruiser family.
