Battery storage compartment leaks on new boat?

Hey George, I was thinking, those compartments have so much room in them compared to mine! And then I realized you don't have batteries in there. Where do you have them -- in the bilge area?

Hi I had the batteries in cases between the fuel tanks. I epoxy bonded ss foot straps to the bilge floor to take the hold down web and keep the substantial weight of 2 batteries where it belongs IMHO. I like the simple acces also, I can have both batteries out on the cockpit floor in a few minutes and the battery leads do not have to be disconnected to do so. George

Thanks for the photo link. How do you do that? George

George,

1) Find the image you wish to post - I usually navigate to it in a separate tab or window in the browser from the one in which I plan to post it.

2) If you are on a PC - right click and copy the image location or image URL or image address (whatever it says that's close to that). If you are on a Mac, control-click and select copy image location.

3) Return to the window in which you want to post and in the menu just below the "Post a Reply" and "Subject" box - click on "Img".

4) Then paste the url to the image,

5) Then hit "Close tags".

This process will generate the following code in your reply message
Code:
[img]TheURL_toYourImage[/img]

Once you get used to it, you can simply type the above code by hand just as quickly.

Well, for the truly lazy I offer my solution. I use a plastic lid from a storage container held down with a diving weight over the top of each lazerth. Take them off when I launch along with tie downs. Some day I will get the new hatch covers. For now my lazerths are dry...unless it rains while I am out.

Mine are sold; hopefully the others that emailed will find some also:-)

Like George, I prefer weight to be low in the boat (old kayaker) so moved the batteries and found mine were fine in the battery boxes which I also kept between the fuel tanks, in the same location.

The lazarettes are at an easily accessible height and can be used for all sorts of items, as the photos from George indicate.

When out for awhile or visiting places that struggle with garbage, I found the hatch is a very convenient place to access and to store empty cans, packaging, banana skins and other "remnants."

Hi Harvey. I was leaning on Scott at Triton pretty heavily to put these in new boats. They are the only thing that leaked on my boat. The rest of the boat is totally tight. Fortunately they are easy to get online or in stores. There may be some un-installed ones about. I actually found my notes on this part in my stuff. Not too bad. George :smiled

George,

Just so you don't feel like the Lone Ranger, back when they were just opening there, there was a group of us from the Bellingham CBGT there for a tour doing the very same thing when we saw a newly built 22 there with smaller covers and the old, DRIPPY, style. Some folks in that conversation were not hesitant about telling them they messed up by doing that. Sure glad that is the only issue you had with Kerri On. (Love that name -- you did great.)

I am the original message writer.

Well, I called the factory twice. They took my ph# each time and said they would get back to me. Never did. Left three answering machine messages as well - those also went unanswered. I can handle and accept a "sorry, there is nothing we can do about it" reply. Sometimes that is just the way it is. But a company ignoring me after I spend $40,000 on one of their new boats is very disappointing.
I will take your advice and pay for and install them myself. Better that than cruising around with wet electrical components.

Tom

Full Stop! Hold the presses!

No sooner did I hit transmit on my last message this morning than I got a call from the factory indicating that they would be sending me two of the hatches. Although it has been a couple of weeks, I was very pleased to hear they would be helping me resolve the issue for me. My faith has been restored!

Hi Tom I am glad they came thru for you. My only question is how did you manage to get a new c dory for 40K? Wow good job. George

I think there may have been some changes at the factory, and that may be the reason for the delay in response. Hopefully the eventual response is an indication that things are getting back on track.

I hope that someone at the factory is following the issues on this list server. It is one of the best methods of feedback a builder can get.

Every time I read about all of the hatch leaking problems, I thank my lucky stars that I have an older (1989) with the fiberglass hatches that go over the fiberglass raised lip. They are larger than the plastic ones so access is great, and it is virtually impossible for them to leak, These are glassed up, gel coated and made at the same time as the boat.

I would think since they are already glassing up the boat, it would only take a bit more material to make 2 hatches.
The labor to do the cut out would be the same. The money saved by not having to buy outsourced hatches would pay for the required hinges and latch and no more leaks, ever.
The next to the last photo (#32) in my album shows the hatches on the older 22's.
I will try to get a photo of them in the open position.

1999 was the last year the 22' had the correct lid covers with raised lips below surrounding the opening. The locking mechanism would occasionally allow a bit of seep to penetrate into the lazarette, but that was easily handled with a judicious bit of grease.

That design change (going to an after market lid) was the worst thing the new owners caused to happen after 1999, and it was done for reasons of economy, penny wise but pound foolish. I complained strongly when I saw the 2000 model with the new lids because I knew problems lay ahead, the kind that Thataway is now correcting with his current 22'.

Some real improvements have occurred since 1999, but correctly covering the lazarettes wasn't among them. When a design is tried and proven, it ought not be abandoned. The prove of the pudding is in the eating.

Tom, Congratulations on getting the mountain to move closer to mohammed, And thanks to whoever at the factory for paying attention. Now if they will just put the right covers on the new builds, some folks will be appreciated and some appreciate the correctness. This is something that we have been working on for several years so we can hope now it is taken care of.

Great boating ahead,

Harvey
