Another new owner on Lake Superior

We've been happily reading the Forum and feel the time has come to join in. Pat and I acquired our 2003 22ft. Cruiser last August. We're not the same Pat and I living in Rochester, NY.

After 65 years of sailing and closing in on 80 it seemed time to try our hand as power boaters. We still have a 19ft. Cape Dory Typhoon for day sailing.

Meri Aura (Finnish for Sea Plow) had three trial runs on Lake Superior prior to winterizing. We're into our second snowfall of the season. We are located on Keweenaw Bay which offers great cruising around the Keweenaw Peninsula and a jumping off point for Isle Royale and Apostle Island adventures. We're 10 minutes from the launch ramp and can provide parking for at least 15 trucks and trailers.

There will be many questions from us in the Spring when we return from a winter break in Panama City Beach, FL and prepare Meri Aura for her first cruise. Tentative plans include the Erie Canal, Lake Champlain, St. Lawrence Seaway, Ottawa River, Rideau Canal, Lake Ontario and back to our starting point near Buffalo, NY. If all goes as planned the trip will take place from mid-May through the end of June. Lake Superior will then provide our cruising grounds and we hope many of you will join us "up north"

Congratulations and welcome! You live in an area with great boating. You have joined the ranks of ex-sailors among the brats. I'm not sure what it is about C-Dorys that makes sailors comfortable turning to the dark side but it seems to be the case. We look forward to hearing about your adventures.

Welcome aboard, Hank and Pat - great boat in a fun area. I'm sure you'll get plenty of enjoyment from your C-Dory. And that Typhoon is a great little sailboat when you need some sailing time. Good combination!

Like you, we kept a small sailboat when we bought our C-Dory. After a couple years and not much use with the sailboat, we found her a new home. I don't think of our move as being "to the dark side," but to "the comfort side"... we've gotten spoiled with that protected helm. :D

Oh, and that C-Dory would be right at home in Panama City Beach (we've cruised that area). 8)

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Welcome to our group and the best-kept-secret boating area in the US (but you know that already). Now we have 6 CD22s within 40 miles; time for a CBGT - since we're into the hardwater season which pub will it be?

Happy boating, now we have one C-Dory for every 2152.2 square miles by land or 1428.703 square miles by water. No kidding about the two ships in the night phrase.

L'anse is a wonderful part of the UP. I have a good friend who grew up there (and of course he's Finnish) :) I hear it's one of the few places in all of the great lakes to catch giant Lake German Browns (Lakers?) whom normally stay in the streams. I've been trying to explore every square inch of the UP for years now (since going to NMU) that's section between Marquette and L'anse (Huron Mountain Club) is yet to be seen by these eyes. The Huron Islands are on my list for next summer.

I'm only over in central Mn. and get up to the Apostles and Ontonagon often. I hope we meet! :)

Welcome. Lake Superior is a fresh water paradise. I will never reveal my secret blueberry mother-load spot...never!
