All we need....IDA

Well, we don't have enough on our plates, without dealing with a late season hurricane. The forcasts put us right in the cross hairs of Hurricane Ida (currently Cat 2) with land fall slightly before noon Tuesday. So tomarrow, we will spend the day, trying to get the house "hurricane proof". Along with picking up Tootsie's ashes and arranging the services later in the week...

With the water below 80 degrees near shore, the storm should decrease in strength as it nears land fall. But we do expect 6 to 8 foot storm surge, which, along with the winds, make it a bit exciting for the boats and our property which we are "developing" next door...

We don't do well with "I" storms...such as Ivan or Ida.

Hi Bob and Marie,

Yeah, I was looking at Weather Underground today and saw that Ida had ramped up to a Cat 2! All the computer models at this time show this whirleygirl going in west of you, then turning east as it makes landfall. :( I know I don't have to tell you that it's still early in this wait and watch situation... hope all goes well for you. Our thoughts are with you.

Bob - You have our sincere wishes that Ida spares you. Edna lost her entire household furnishings which were stored at Kiln, Ms. ten miles inland from Bay St. Louis, on the Jordan River. Katrina's surge put four feet of water in the storage unit. We couldn't get to the unit for almost a month. At least you can move Thataway to higher ground. Let us hope for the best. John & Edna

Sorry again to hear about your mother in law We just got back from California for a Memorail service for my mother in law and we see a Hurricane forming in the Gulf of Mexico I hope it spares all of us .

Good luck Bob hope it fizzles out before it reaches you. The forecast shows it coming across the state to us but it's predicted to be just heavy rain when it reachs here. I had plans to go to Saint Augustine Sunday to meet up with a friend whose doing the Florida mini loop but will probably cancel the trip.

Yea,

We'll be hopin for a continued fizzle over here at Bon Secour as well. The best of luck to all the brats in Ida's path.

Hang in there Bob.

Dan and Denise

Best wishes to you and Marie, Bob.

Get her nailed down there then come west and take a vacation in your old harbor, Huntington, and stay on your old boat there!

Jeff

Bob, we are sorry to hear about Tootsie, we so enjoyed her company last year about this time...

We'll be thinking of you, and watching the weather.... If ya need help, please let me know and I will fly out to help..

What a great group! Thanks for the good wishes and offers. The truth is that I know that if things really were bad, that you all are the types who would come and help out!

We started prep this AM. The Century is tied to the dock, but has a 14# Delta well set in to keep it off the dock if the wind clocks to the East. The Caracal is lashed to the trailer, which is secured with ground screws. There is a heavy tarp, with tie downs every 12" over the boat. The Tom Cat is up about 6' above the mean water (bottom of the lift is that high). Power is disconnected to the dock. There are lines to prevent swingng of the lift and the boat.

The Fatty knees has been moved up onto the lawn, and the Kayaks to the house. Furniture is secured around the pool; no storm shutters for this one.

It looks as if it will come to the west, and then curve East, but we know that these guys/gals have a mind of their own. So we are ready for a Cat 1 plus. Cars fueld up, gensets checked out. Extra water drawn etc. Hard drives backed up, and if we have to leave at the last minute, papers, and hard drives are ready to go in the "bug out bags".

I guess monther nature has to keep us on our toes!

I am in Savannah tonight, (Monday) en route to Jacksonville on Friday. It is pretty cloudy right now but thus far I have not seen any wind or rain. If you have to ride out a hurricane in a boat, a 220' boat with a 55' beam is the one to be on!

BTW is a USCG captain's license required for someone driving an electric boat carrying 12 or so passengers -- on a privately-owned body of water? Happened to me yesterday while on an "alligator tour".

Hi Warren,

If you're carrying passengers for hire... yes (generally, there are some exceptions).

Re: Ida...

Offshore of Mobile, at 5:00 CST and down to 50 mph. Tropical storm at this point, still potentially dangerous.

We're about 600 miles away, and yesterday the south Texas coast had advisories for coastal flooding. Waves were 8-10' yesterday, and our tide has been considerably higher than normal (our low tide was higher than a typical high tide). Did I mention: 600 miles away?

Hope she continues to weaken.

Warren currently it's cloudy in Jax with no rain. We did get a little last night and some high winds but that passed. Seas are 4 to 6 and we've been experiencing flood tides which are typical for this time of year. If you need anything while in Jax give me a call at 904-219-2675. I expect you are traveling outside in that size vessel but if it does dip inside when you pass bouy 46A wave! Shame you missed the airshow which was last weekend at Mayport Naval Station.

I believe we are going to stay in the ICW for the whole trip. That is one of the advantages of cruising in a small ship (small compared to the Princess, etc. type ships.) Thanks for the contact info. We will be in JAX all day Friday, I think. Flying home Saturday morning.

Warren

For 12 it need to be a CG inspected vessel as well .
Ida report at 8.55 A.M. in Apalachicola ;raining ,24 mph steady wind with gusts to 36 . Not too bad .

Ida report from the Bon secour River:

4:00 am today storm surge plus tide at about 5'.

At 7:00 am the water rose during an out going tide an additional foot to about 6'. Water underneath our unit. Chased us to some higher ground till noon or so.

Lots of debris including cushions and coolers. I think it's time for some scavenging. I already reteived two new 12' treated 2x4's!

It has quit raining, just blowing hard right now.

All in all a pretty gentle storm from our perspective.

Bob, I hope it was gentle on y'all as well.

Dan

Dan, I think you got a bit more than we did. It was sort of a non event here. Didn't even loose the power; no trees down, and I had the scanner on--no real abnormal activity, except there seemed to be less crime. Probably the bad guys don't like to get wet! (Ok--I was at the gun store today, and someone came in saying that someone broke into their house and stole a couple of old guns).

Marie thinks the wind was up to 35 knots, but I thought that was a push. The bay was rough today, and surge was about 4 feet max. Same as Dan noted, water rising on falling tide this AM--now the water level has gone down 2 feet.

Thanks for all of the good wishes.
