YES, I saw the picture...just wondered if they were going to be our back yard neighbors..... That is...do I bring a swimsuit or not ? Ha !... easy way to clear the place out.. lots of "I want my money back"

I probably will bring the back panel of our enclosure anyway..

I'm pretty sure that most of the beach "improvements" are on the other side of the pier, but I have not seen them, just the pictures and article on them that I read "somewhere".

The "improvements" are all on the West Side of the pier-where the picnic tables, small band stands, and volley ball courts were. Not sure how many of those old facilities remain. The actual beach--which is sand, with many pebbles and smooth stones, is below the rock sea wall, or on the East side the cliff.--no room for Palapas on the road to the East--there is a fuel pump there, for the vehicles, as well as loading areas for vans and other transport---trash pickup.l

Your bathing suits may be an improvement to the scene!

Wish we could be there! I would love to lead a revolt against the improvements!
 
Think Speedos Joel, an overkill, but it should work clearing the beach...

I was just there about a month ago, pitiful West of the pier. Volleyball court removed (very bad), picnic tables and BBQs scrunched into a small area, etc. Looked very uninviting and in my opinion, the people occupying the new stuff didn't look all that happy, maybe smug is the word. Actually, the little rented huts were mostly empty, only towels or a cup or two, the occupants were either running around or down at the beach.

My work schedule has been all over the map in the last few weeks, trips to Utah and Massachusetts, but the mgrs decided my request for a vac months ago should take precedence.

I'll bring the potato/macaroni salad.
 
Speedos are ok but I am thinking thinking my wet suit will be enough to to induce bleach eyewash :D .. Joel you and I will be a pair for sure, C-brat calender material. That smack you heard was my lovely Laurie cuffing me upside me head. Anyway...
We are excited about this trip. Few odds and ends on the boat to attend. I plan on trying my hand at some fishing here and there any advice on gear, lures etc. Was thinking about not bringing camperback just to conserve on space (yeah sure), could be wind protection, any thoughts? We will arrive in MDR on Saturday any must do things while hanging out? Never been to Catalina. :smiled
 
Hi John

For fishing at Catalina, the easiest is bait casting using squid as bait. Usually frozen squid is available in the store there, but sometimes it is not available. If you can bring some down with you that is good insurance.

We always take our cockpit shade cover to Catalina, though we never bring it on the Delta Cruise. This is because you are sitting at anchor in your boat much of the day and you want the sun protection even though it is a perfect 74 degrees.

Make sure you have some type of tender to get to shore and that you bring quarters for the paid showers!

A few must do's at Two Harbors: 1) Buffalo Milk at the Reef Bar, 2) a walk to Cat Harbor, 3) Breakfast with coffee at the Grill, 4) a fast paid shower, 5) a kayak up to the USC Marine Center, 6) nearby rock fishing, 7) a hike to the Harbor overlook vista, 8) snorkeling to see the Garabaldi, and 9) 4 PM happy hour on your own vessel. Others can add to this list.

We are happy that you and Laurie can finally make this adventure.

We have a real treat this year..... Keith is coming !. (C-Pup)... I talked to him and he can only come over for a couple of days but he will be coming over on Monday... may have to go back on Tuesday but at least we will be able to enjoy his company ...Have not seen Keith for a number of years...

Change of plans for us.....On Sunday we will drive to Marina Del Rey to launch at the ramp there...I don't like the parking situation but you'all have nicer trucks than I do so I am pretty safe...

I spent all day working on my boat trailer lights. I finally found the short 1/2 way under the trailer in the middle! Kath said I absolutely had to get the turn signals working or we could not drive through downtown LA with the boat!

It is great that Keith on C-Pup is coming later in the week.
 
For those that will be at MDR on Sunday night, we will likely either take the Harbor taxi or walk over to Whiskey Reds for a kick off dinner for those that want to participate.

For Sunday night I expect it will be eight of us at MDR: Jim & Kath, John & Robbin, Joel & Susan, John & Laurie.

I am not sure if Steve will be there Sunday night or not as he sometimes comes over on Monday morning. Also, I think Kent & Marcia come over from Long Beach.
 
Thank you all for attending our 16th Annual Catalina Offshore Adventure. This year seemed like the hottest weather on record, but we still enjoyed the nearly perfect weather. We would not make this journey each year if this was not such a magical place in paradise.

John & Robbin, Steve et. al., Kent & Marcia, Joel & Susan, John & Laurie, Keith, Floyd, and Bernie & Marilyn - thank you one and all for coming. This was a wonderful, rock solid group of people that Kath and I thoroughly enjoyed hanging out with for the week. It is a privilege for Kath and I that we have gotten to know this group of people over the years and I lives are richer for the experience.

God willing, we hope to see you all next year, same time and place!

Laurie and I returned from a glorious week at Two Harbors with some of the nicest people we know. What could be better than that? It was really nice connecting with folks (fellow C-Brats) we've known from other venues and to have time to get to know them better. This is truly a unique community of boat owners who not only share an obviously superior taste in boats :lol: but make the most of their lives. To those who have not made the effort to get down to Southern CA and make this famous trek to Catalina Island, I urge you to give it a go.

To Bernie, Marilyn, Floyd and Keith great hangin out with you, flip flops, awesome T shirts and all. Steve, Laurie and I truly enjoyed meeting your nephew Enrique. I had a great time getting to know you a bit better and catching Fish! Kent and Marcia you two are awesome! I am so glad we finally had just a bit of time to hang out and chat. Joel and Sue ... Sea 3PO Wow, determination and spirit, I was truly impressed when you guys muscled that boat across with spit and spite. Like icebergs we all are, there is always more just below the surface. John and Robbin, you two are rocks, rock solid. Thank you so much for your support and roadside assistance! :shock: There we were in "lovely" downtown Kettleman City, 104 degrees with a broken trailer... Jim and Kath, what can I say, without you two Catalina would be just another place on my list of places I should go check out but don't make the time to do so. Thank you two for being the catalyst and being able to harness the energy of the best of this little web site that helps bring such diverse people to meet in such great locations. Oh I almost forgot the Barbeques were excellent, Fish Fry, surf and turf with cage free, free range bratwurst, home grown tomatoes, cold exotic beer, manhattans on the hoof and cool wine - who could want anything more!

Once again, a fabulous adventure hosted by Pounder skipper Jim and his first mate Kathy. A great time was had by all in spite of recent changes to the "ambience" of the formerly laid back island community..

Our barbecues were a real highlight, even though taking place in a "shoved in the corner" location. An interesting blog on the recent "improvements" made by the Catalina Island Company can be read on captaincurran.com. The article is titled "Social Stratification at Two Harbors on Catalina Island".

The notice supplied by the company announcing their planned improvements stated that the new Palapas will bring back historic South Sea Island charm to the Two Harbors cove. The Palapas, as well as the barbecue grills and picnic tables for group gatherings are fenced off and priced at a premium. Most of the new improvements are little used (at least during the week we were there).

If the Catalina Island Company was really trying to re-create the ambience of the 1930's and 40's, then they have failed and have, as Captain Curran stated, created a Pay for Play atmosphere, much like Disneyland.

I'll still love Two Harbors, i'll just make sure to bring a bigger wallet next time.
 
Another fantastic voyage completed to the Island Paradise of Catalina with a wonderful bunch of C-Brats. I feel so fortunate to have these kinds of experiences messing around on boats with wonderful company. I agree, it seems like the new business model has completely destroyed the family vibe of yesteryear with its new push to cater to the very wealthy. While we were there the new facilities were basically empty while us and the rest of the "poor" people bbq'd out of the way.

Ah well....
