16th Annual Catalina Off-Shore Adventure C-Dory Gathering

Wish I could join you guys again on this one. The Delta Cruise was a blast. I'll have to get this one on my calendar in one of the next few years! Colby

Hello All,
Laurie and I have been intending to do the Catalina Cruise for several years now and I think this is the year! I am going to put w..k (four letter, bad word according to my retired friends  ) on the back burner and head out across the shimmering seas and set the clock to Jimmy Buffet / Jimmy Gibson time. We look forwarding to meeting some new friends and hanging our with some others whom we've had the pleasure previously. Our 22 C-Dory Slack Time has been on this trip with its previous owner Mike and his Lady, and I can tell our little boat is ready to take us. Hope to see you all soon!

Update: Because of some family commitments we won't be arriving until Thurs 8/3 in the morning but that will still give us a couple of days with the group

Dear All C-Dory Adventurers:

Our Classic Catalina Trip is now only 4 weeks away! Now is the time to get on board as the C-Dory’s will soon be leaving the harbor and heading across the Pacific towards Japan.

Today we have the following 6 to 8 boat attendees for the 16th Annual Catalina Off-Shore Adventure:

1. Jim & Kath - Pounder
2. John & Robbin - Dinner Belle II
3. Steve et. al. - Dora Jean
4. Floyd & Eiko - Far C'r
5. Joel & Susan - SEA3PO
6. John and Laurie – Slack Time
7 Maybe Dr. Bob and Marie – Serenity
8. Maybe Bernie and Marilyn – Vega.

Can the two “maybe” boats please firm up their commitments one way or the other? Can some other C-Dory’s also join this party?

Everyone is welcome to come to this event as there are no boat number limitations and the only constraint is the resolve of the Skipper. Please consider attending this historic C-Dory gathering, likely the longest lasting gathering, and probably the only off-shore adventure, listed on this site.

This is really a remarkable venue, and it is testimonial to the long-lasting nature of this event. Please sign up now. Who knows when we will all crap out and this event will only be a fond memory.

I just had new fuel injectors put in my diesel truck (cost an arm and a leg) so I can make the 400 mile haul from Sacramento to Marina Del Ray. Get your own truck and boat equipment in order as this is a true blue water event.

More information will be forthcoming as we get closer to the departure date.

Marilyn and Bernie on Vega will be attending along with Far C'r but we won't be arriving until Thurs 8/3 early in the morning. We will be looking forward to joining the fun and the comradeship of this wonderful tradition!

Hi Jim and all - Looks like the MARCIA JANE will be able to make the Two Harbors trip this year. I have followed Dr. Bob's advice on the installation of a davit/hoist to help with back issues and look forward to trying it out. (I'll share it with you Joel)

We'll be launching and staying overnight in Huntington Harbour and leaving about the same time as those leaving from the L.A. area.

We'll see you on the way over.

Hi Jim,
Slack Time and her crew will be joining all of you in Catalina! We will be leaving early the saturday before and possibly head over to the island on Sunday or we may mess around a bit and meet up with some of you and head over Monday. I will be in touch by phone. text w details. :D

Kent, that is great that you will be joining us again!

John you are welcome to hook up with Eudy and me on our drive to MDR on Sunday. If you are interested please call me for the details.

More details will be coming regarding food assignments for the Monday BBQ.

I am still on the Central BC Coast!

I really do not like the parking area at MDR...We have had trucks broken into and tickets...it is not a safe place (I think) to park...

I am planning on launching at Channel Islands and motoring over...takes a few hours but it is a nice ride and I don't know of anyone having parking problems at the marina... I am going to take my truck and trailer back to my house and park there but the CI parking lot is safe...(as safe as it can be)

Has anyone checked with the factory to see if they would like to sponsor a dinner...or even send us hats or shirts... remember the year the old company took us to dinner...gave us all hats...and nice jackets....one year it was dinner and nice vests...not the cheep stuff either...

Anyone willing to be laughed at ? Really with all the free advertising we do for them they sure should kick in some goodies....

Joel
SEA3PO

OK...I will write the letter.... I don't know if I can take any more rejection...but at least if we don't ask we can't complain..

I really do think this is good for the company ...great advertising as we are a large draw for folks who buy the boats.

We'll see what their answer is...

Joel.

Thanks for doing this. Who knows, the factory may jump in. You may want to also ask one of their large dealers.

After all this is a unique off-shore adventure involving C-dory's. Also, it allows them to reach into the large California market from the Pacific North West.

Dear All.

Right now we have the following 8 boats, and approximately 18 attendees, for our Catalina trip:

1. Jim & Kath – Pounder
2. John & Robbin – Dinner Belle II
3. Steve et. al. – Dora Jean
4. Joel & Susan – SEA3PO
5. John & Laurie – Slack Time
6. Kent & Marcia – Marcia Jane
7. Floyd & Eiko – Far C’r (arrives Thursday morning)
8. Bernie & Marilyn – Vega (arrives Thursday morning).

This year, like the last three years, we are having a more informal kickoff on Sunday, July 30th. In the past most everyone has met at Marina Del Ray (MDR) on Sunday for a get together before we all go over on Monday morning. This year, like prior years, some attendees are leaving at different times and locations, but most everyone will be together on Monday, July 31st at Two Harbors.

Kath and I will arrive in MDR Sunday late afternoon with the John and Robbin. We will then go over to Two Harbors on Monday morning, July 31st. For those that plan to meet at MDR on Sunday, and who want to, can go out to dinner together on Sunday night at MDR. We usually take the MDR Harbor shuttle to a local restaurant.

We will then proceed to Two Harbors on Monday morning, July 31st, leaving MDR at approximately 7:00 AM. When we get to Two Harbors we will obtain shore side “string line” reservations (on the left hand side of the fuel dock facing the shore), and together.

We will coordinate this reservation on the way over via communication on VHF Channel 69. We will contact Harbor Patrol on VHF Channel 9 when we get to Two Harbors.

Many of us will return from Two Harbors on early Saturday morning, August 5th. Again, we will leave Two Harbors at approximately 7:00 AM on that Saturday.

On Monday night, July 31st, we will have group pot luck on the beach. Each boat should plan on bringing a dish to share with the group. Everyone is to bring their own drinks to the beach party Monday night.

During the week for our activities we may have a fishing trip (and an associated fish fry), a sightseeing trip to Avalon, a scuba diving or snorkeling trip, a kayak excursion along the shore, hikes around the Island, and/ or a bicycle trip around Two Harbors. On Friday night, August 4th, for those that want to, we usually have a group dinner together at the Harbor Reef Restaurant.

For most aging C-Dory folks, it will be sufficient to just relax on our boats. This activity includes watching the sun rise, and set, and enjoying the near perfect 75-degree weather in flip-flops, shorts, and t-shirts.

Some folks eat breakfast at the Galley Grill in the morning, and most eat light lunches and dinners on their own boats. Often there will be mid-afternoon drinks at the Harbor Reef Saloon or the Banning House Lodge. Some folks often host a happy hour during the week on their boats. There is a good grocery store at Two Harbors where one can buy most anything needed and you can replenish ice every few days.

Be sure to bring a good functioning tender to this event, as a big part of this venue is getting to, and from, the dingy dock, and cruising around to all the other boats and visiting. A functioning small outboard on the tender really helps. Also, bring quarters for the pay showers, another key ingredient to happy Island life!

Regarding food assignments for our Monday night pot luck BBQ on the beach we need volunteers for the following dishes:

A. Steaks to BBQ – Jim and Kath
B. Cheese, chips, and dip, etc. for pre-dinner snacks – need volunteer
C. Potato or macaroni pasta salad – need volunteer
D. Green salad and dressing – John and Robbin
E. Garlic bread and corn and butter and aluminum foil – need volunteer
F. Dessert (ice cream from the store) and cookies – need volunteer.

We have at least 6 vessels who will be there for the Monday night BBQ. There are at least six (6) opportunities to volunteer for a food assignment. Plan on about 15 people for dinner on Monday night. For any other vessel(s), please make your own suggested food contributions. Please sign up now for your potluck assignment!

If anyone needs to check in regarding logistics on this trip they may call me on my cell telephone, (916) 799-0286.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone at this historic long-held event.

Jim & Kath

Looks like the Slack Time crew will be on the hook for option E, Corn and Garlic Bread, ohh and option X I will bring down some local Bay Area craft beer for folks to try :beer Truly looking forward to this trip. John and Laurie

Please put MARCIA JANE down for ice cream and cookies. Actually, I think I'll have a snack right now!

Sure are looking forward to this voyage. I hope the recent "improvements" to the Two Harbor's beach don't change the laid back character of that end of the Island!
