11-07 - 2009 Snohomish River Delta Day Cruise

We plan to be there and will stay the night before likely over at Whidbey and also Saturday night in Everett. We are eager make this event and sorry we had to miss the Sequim gathering.

Greg, Cindie, and Aven

Welcome aboard Greg, Cindie and Aven.

Two other vessels have indicated that they will be joining us however, they haven't signed up yet. (I talked with one of them this morning as I was driving away from the hospital in the Medic Unit). If I count their two boats, then we so far have 9 vessels slated for this journey. Depending on which vessels (some of those with two C-Dorys are bringing....if they are bringing their 16's), then I tally three 16', four 22's, and two 25's.

This cruise is only a little over 2 weeks away!

:cry :sad
I was so looking forward to making this cruise but I will be 35000 ft above all of you on my return flight from Nashville. arival time 20:55. so no cruise for me. hopefully Lisbeth will get someone to run the Sensei and take her on this wonderful day cruise.

Oh look they are having a cruise just for my birthday :cake

Well mines on the 6th the night before and if I can get up in the morning we will be there. Have to keep a eye on the weather and the river levels. this year if its high tide I will be traveling past the highway two bridge and taking that route back to the main river. I have not gone that way before and do not ask or advice following but I always wanted to see that route. may not be able to pass under one bridge but we will find out.

Tom, if you are referring to passing South under the EAST end of Hwy 2, I did it one time and then followed on to meet up with the main river below Snohomish. It does get shallow where it meets up with the main river and has a few stumps in there, but it is doable. I actually found that route to be extremely boring as I felt as if I was cruising in a "ditch with high embankments on either side" as in "not much to see".

To all that are concerned about the river levels (ie: flooding etc.). We really won't know until the morning of the cruise. If due to heavy rains we find a lot of debris (aka logs) being washed down river, we will call it a "no go". In that case we can switch to some kind of "plan B" such as a cruise to Kingston or Edmonds or Langley......whatever the group decides. (In years past we've not had to resort to a "plan B").

About an hour ago, I worked on a few more maps for our cruise.

just found out that there is a two day salmon derby on the 7th and 8th. So the ramp maybe a little crowed. we should all allow for a little more time at the ramp in the begaining.

Dave I want to take a look at the area for future duck hunting info.

It is great to see the numbers of vessels coming on board for this cruise. (Way to go Jeremiah for piloting Sensei).

In answer to a couple of questions that were just "pm'd" to me.

The number of miles that we will travel is about 30 miles....Just A Wild Guess.

As for charts? I will furnish each vessel with a serious of maps with highlighted courses. Naturally, we will stay together as a group....unless of course someone choose to trail off on their own. Additionally, we can stay on the same vhf radio frequency. Prior to departure, I'll highlight some of the "known" areas to be avoided, however bear in mind that this is a river with a series of connecting channels that are prone to change due to frequent flooding, so an element of caution is always appropriate along with prudent speed. If you follow the vessel in front of you, you should be OK.....I'll be happy to be the "point vessel". (To my knowledge none of our vessels have encountered problems in previous years).

The Everett Marina (it is the "Largest Public Marina on the West Coast) does have guest docking available with shore power availability. (Since Tom advised us of the fishing derby that is taking place the same weekend, I don't know if that will have an effect on guest dock space). The long dock in front of Anthony's Home Port Restaurant would be my preference, and it is best to try to get on the inside of that dock so you are not on the less protected river side. There is also dock space near Scuttlebutts Brewery which is located at the far east end of the marina.
You can "check" out the marina at www.portofeverett.com

P.S. I forgot until looking at the Port of Everett web site that there is also moorage available at the new 12th Street Yacht Basin with shore power. This is located next to the 10th Street Boat Launch.

Yesterday I began the process of preparing more maps for this cruise.

Just a couple of hours ago I returned from a quick drive to Popeye's Marine and Kayak in Everett. While there I purchased enough Snohomish River Delta / Estuary paper charts to give to the skippers of each of the vessels that have signed up as of today for the cruise coming up this Saturday. (Although they are referred to as charts, they are not much more than a "map"). These charts (maps) have a better "overall view" of our cruising area than the maps that I've also assembled for each participating vessel. I also checked out the river and it was looking good today. Hopefully, the recent high water flushed out a bunch of debris and we don't receive too much more rain before the weekend.

Hi Steve,
I already noticed that you had signed up and I've got maps for you. Wow, two boats from Lake Stevens and since I work there, a person could almost say "three boats from Lake Stevens"..... :wink .

Lake Stevens representing! Meredith won't be coming, though. She's back @ work on graves. I'll be bringing my father-in-law as first mate. You'll all like Lon...he's a good guy and very easy to get along with.

Unfortunately something has come up and we won't be able to make it this year. It's one of our favorite get togethers, but, we have to opt out. Here's wishing you all a great time on the Snohomish.

I told dave I would go but did not sign up and now I have to skip it, maybe, we will see, sort of?? have I been clear enough? I will see you when I see you.

Everyone should have a good time but I have work that day if my clients want to go look if we dont find some thing before then, maybe....

Dave,

Sorry to do this to you, looks like I'm jumping on the bandwagon but I won't be able to make it either. It looks like the weather might be pretty bad as well. If the weather doesn't deter you from going, have fun out there and be safe.
