11-07 - 2009 Snohomish River Delta Day Cruise

How shallow is it on the way up to Snohomish.

That is certainly a difficult question to answer as we are dealing with a river with varying unpredictable depths that change due to recent rains and tides (hence my preference to do this cruise during a period of high tides), and being a river, the water creates its' own channels. In some areas depths can reach 25 - 30 feet. Some areas can be quite shallow, however I've never had any problems, and I've marked those areas on the maps that I'll distribute. Up to and just beyond the SR 2 bridge on the main river there are large commercial tugs and fishing vessels. Back in the sloughs I've seen large sailboats moored near the East end of the SR 2 trestle.

So probably my best answer is that "the river is navigable up to Snohomish". As you cruise on the river and in the delta area, you will begin to gain your own level of comfort as you begin to read the waters.

I just wonder if I can get the big drafty Seasport up thru. I may have to stick to my fishing plans instead and meet up with u guys on the next one.

I'm always on the cautious side when advising others what to do with their vessels. You can always venture out with us and if at some time you feel uneasy, you can turn around and head back to the sound. It really is a fun trip to make and most certainly you will feel comfortable at least up to the West end of the SR 2 where all the big tugs and fishing vessels are moored.

To make the event, we will have to leave tomorrow midday and motor up from Port Orchard. With the current forecast for waves 2-4 ft, the wife is not so interested in leaving port. We will watch the conditions through tomorrow mid-morning and see if there is any improvement. I will post another message if we fully decide not to go.

We have high wind and rain here in Fall City this morning...here is the current NOAA forecast.

We had really hoped to be able to make it over for this event. SleepyC needs a good freshwater run sometime, and we were looking forward to all the good company. Not happening this year but will make a concerted effort to join in for the 2010 version. Thanks, Dave, for your efforts, and I wish you all the best in weather, (Iffy but not our reason for missing,) and camaraderie there.

We are going to miss the event. This would have been our first overnight trip but I think the conditions should be better for our first three days criss-crossing the sound. We were looking forward to it as well so if you save our map set, I promise to use it next time. And that doesn't have to be a year away!

Have a good time out there, we will try to sneak out a bit on Sunday.

The good part about this cruise is that we are not affected much by the winds in the river. This morning I was able to observe the river as I crossed the 529 bridge into Everett and then as I crossed the SR 2 (Hewitt Ave. Trestle) bridge on my way to Lake Stevens. At that time the river looked good and flat, with lots of water and no visible debris....even after the torrential downpours we experienced last night, but who knows what tomorrow will actual be like?

That being said, I still plan on being at the launch ramp with Sea Shift in the morning and if others show up, we can figure out a "game plan" whether or not it involves a cruise. For those unable to make the excursion, I'm certain there will be other opportunities for this fine adventure.

(We could always "circle the wagons" in the launch parking lot, sit in our boats and make motor sounds with our voices...... )

Safety for our crews, ourselves and vessels is #1 :thup

 I'll bring some glasses of water. We can throw them in our faces for more realism. I'll be there with the boat and the FIL and we'll go from there.

Looks like Bambina and crew will miss the '09 river convergence. Beaten just barely this year by a warm house, soft couch, remote, college football, sports buddies, garlic and a stuffed refrigerator.

It was close, though; didn't beat the spread.

Just got home from a fabulous journey. The weather at the dock was less than ideal; winds, rain, cold...but at least there was lots of parking. We arrived to see Dave and Joe & Ruth (they had come down just to help launch, say hi etc! :o ) eagerly awating our arrival. After the rest of the adventurous group of five boats arrived, we got a quick run-down from Dave and off we went.

The weather actually cooperated and the river afforded us the protected waters we needed. The rain slowed and a few spots of blue materialized, if only for a short while. We spent the day cruising up the river and estuary, enjoying the views from the water, while Dave narrated via channel 68 and the Wallas hummed away. I learned a bunch and look forward to this next year. My FIL Lon had a great time and said "What a nice bunch of people".

Thanks to Dave for making it happen and to all who participated.

We had a quaint little gathering today with one 16', four 22 footers and one 25', as well as a surprise visit by Ruth and Joe at the launch site. As soon as we passed under the SR 529 bridge we were out of the wind and waves and cruised with plenty of water under our keels at all times. I even was able to don my sunglasses for about five minutes of sunshine.
It was great having you all join me on this five hour cruise! If I'm not mistaken, it was Bob Hope who closed his shows by singing.... :note "thanks, for the memories" :note ....and then of course, Perry Como with :note " "The Bluest Skies You've Ever Seen, Are In Seattle" :note ....

Well, yes, Perry, but really it was the Bobby Sherman version that was the real deal! Listen here! Just follow along!

Seattle

The bluest skies you've ever seen are in Seattle
And the hills the greenest green, in Seattle
Like a beautiful child, growing up, free an' wild
Full of hopes an' full of fears, full of laughter, full of tears
Full of dreams to last the years, in Seattle
. . . in Seattle!

When it's time to leave your home and your loved ones
It's the hardest thing a boy can ever do
An' you pray that you will find
someone warm an' sweet an' kind
But you're not sure what's waiting there for you!

The bluest skies you've ever seen are in Seattle
And the hills the greenest green, in Seattle
Like a beautiful child, growing up, free an' wild
Full of hopes an' full of fears, full of laughter, full of tears
Full of dreams to last the years, in Seattle
. . . in Seattle!

< instrumental break >

When you find your own true love, you will know it
By her smile, by the look in her eye
Scent of pine trees in the air, never knew a day so fair
It makes you feel so proud that you could cry!

The bluest skies you've ever seen are in Seattle
And the hills the greenest green, in Seattle
Like a beautiful child, growing up, free an' wild
Full of hopes an' full of fears, full of laughter, full of tears
Full of dreams to last the years, in Seattle
. . . in Seattle!

In Seattle . . . in Seattle . . . in Seattle!

Pat, we missed you and Patty on the cruise today and I know that you folks really enjoy that outing.

I'm certain that you will be pleased to know that your fellow C-Brats on this cruise declined to visit Scuttlebutts Brewery after the cruise....I believe it was because they didn't want to patronize your competition. :wink
