Well let's firm up the Lake Powell cruise dates for this September. Rendezvous will be in Oak Canyon on Saturday, September 22. I will launch in Wahweap on Friday at noon and head up river with anyone that would like to tag along. Probably overnight somewhere along the way...then head for Oak Canyon on Saturday morning. We will have a potluck type thing in Oak Canyon on Saturday night...then head up river to see the high points of the lake over the next few days...planning on hauling out at Wahweap on Friday the 28th.
Snow pack is only 58% of normal so far...but the rivers are up...like 175%..so anybody's guess what water levels will look like in September. We will deal with that as always.

We've been waiting for dates to add to our cruising calendar for this year. We're planning on making this one. I don't see Oak Canyon on my Stan Jones map. Do I need a special C-Brat decoder ring to find it?

We are planning on coming to Lake Powell this year. We've been very impressed with the accounts and pictures we've read and seen. It looks like a wonderful place. We're off to Florida on Thursday for a month so we won't be doing any serious planning on this trip for a while. We'll keep watching the site and are looking forward to coming.

Roger...Oak Canyon is to starboard ascending at mile 51. It's on the Stan Jones map...which by the way everyone should get a copy of. Lots of good info on the back of the map...and the standard most use for finding your way around Lake Powell. Available at the various stores at the lake...but I would order one online...it's fun to peruse and plan.

Oak Creek Canyon S entrance is close to Lat:37.124N and Long 110.957W (this is from the topo map app we talked about the other day, but it overlays on Google Earth and the I pad maps. With the water level variation the area of Oak Creek Canyon changes a lot.

It is one of our favorite places, and Marie usually catches a bunch of strippers there (I clean them as fast as she catches them).

We are planing on being there for the gathering.

So, i can save a link but how do i save the PDF itself? Maybe i am just missing it?

If your Ipad software is up to date you can save pdfs in the book shelf
or you get an app for viewing pdfs, I use PDF Reader Pro it lets me organize in folders. I have all my manuals for the boat in pdf on the Ipad.

On your Ipad
open the link in safari
touch the map just below the toolbars. Touch the open in button and pick the program you want to open it in. You can touch the open in ibooks button and it will store it on the bookshelf. If you have a pdf viewer then pick it.

I am assuming that you are trying to do this on your Ipad. Give it a try.

Hi Chris, Kerri On will be there. Just picked up my Powell prop 13 1/4 by 15. Should get me the 500 rpm I lost with the 17 pitch. We shall see. George

ooh! I don't want to miss this:

I only catch stripers there myself. It sounds like you have more fun:-)

Well, we did have the photo shoot girls at Forgotten Canyon one time. I missed most of that myself, but heard about it a lot.

We are going to reluctantly pass on Powell again this year (last year, not by choice!), and take our September vacation on Lake Coeur d'Alene. Everybody have a great time, I know you will!

Jeff, I think that Chuck would probably agree with me in that Defiance House was more interesting than the naked photo shoot girls. I am not sure if this is a sign of age, dementia, or the naked chicks seemed out of place and shouldn't have been there.

Tyboo / DaNag,

Any chance we can get you to put in a sign-up list for this summer's Powell CBGT? (Oak Canyon Potluck: 9/22- )

Thx,
Casey

My first geology job, as a summer assistant for an oil exploration company field party, was to help map the geology of Glen Canyon before the 'new dam' was closed to create Lake Powell. The muddy water of the Colorado River was just starting to back up into Wahweap Basin - we called it 'Lake Foul' - and were saddened to think of the loss to all of the "canyon no one knew."

Glen Canyon was remarkable - a canoeable river with unique scenery. After that mapping summer, and viewing the glory of Glen Canyon, it was years before I could bring myself to return to the lake that had drowned the cistine chapel of natural beauty to within a few feet of the 'ceiling.' I had to restrain myself when I heard people describe the beauty of the lake.

I was finally convinced to lead a University geology adult Ed. Class to view the geology of the lake. I made a reconnaissance trip for a few weeks alone
in January in a rental aluminum small power boat, camping ashore.

It was hard to see the loss - but alone in the winter it slowly sunk in that
change is inevitable in life and that it was essential to expose folks to natural
beauty if it was to be preserved.

I dedicated myself to that cause, both in my geology teaching (intro geology
classes taught only outdoors, field trips to beauty spots for geology
students, adult Ed natural history classes co-taught with biologists,
historians, archeologists to every occupied continent - multiple times.
Serving on Governor appointed state-wide citizen committees to identify
natural areas in the state to set aside for future state park consideration,
serving years on our county planning commission, initiating an environmental studies program at the University, etc,

Not tooting horn - those who know me, know that's not me.) Just
highlighting what the experience of knowing Glen Canyon and later Lake Powell meant to me and my life.

Lake Powell is a beautiful place - and a marvelous experience. Take away a feeling of appreciation that hopefully can be spread to preserving for future generations what a gift natural beauty gives to all of us.
