Were those caught off the beach in Oak Bay? If so, I'm kicking myself for not having left my fishing gear in the truck back at wahweep.

I believe that the fish that Donna is holding were caught in some deeper water in Oak Canyon, but both she and Keith, and I all caught stripers from the beach where we had the get together. Fishing gear is like a credit card... don't leave home without it.

We've had a great second visit to Powell. Met lots of new folks, as usual, good times, good food, spectacular scenery and exciting news about Casey and Mary. Proved once again the fish are mostly safe around me. Had extra pleasure seeing Brats even after the official gathering had scattered. (we've met enjoyed and said goodbye to Carpy at least four times now!) The best part is we're still on the lake. We're in Wahweap campground now and will meet two sets of our kids later today to take them on their first visit.

Andy & Molly made it home to South Dakota on Saturday. MollyJ took a break and is now sitting in a storage yard in Fort Smith, Arkansas waiting for us to pick her up on our way to Florida in December for the winter. Thanks to everyone for a great gathering. We, too, enjoyed renewing acquaintances and meeting new CBrats. We hauled out on Wed. after a couple extra nights on the lake. Was hard to leave.
On our way home we met another couple traveling east on I-40 with their Venture heading to Green Turtle Bay to start the Great Loop. Other than a flat on the trailer (thanks for BoatUS Towing insurance) the trip home was uneventful, always a good thing.
Happy Boating to all of you. Hope our paths cross again.

"Katmai" is finally off the lake.

We arrived at Wahweap about 3PM yesterday after traveling (displacement mode) from Dangling Rope marina. The forecast was for afternoon winds 15-25, and sure enough by the time we came through the 'cut from Warm Creek, Wahweap Bay was fairly bumpy.

We decided to go ahead and retrailer the boat/kayak rather than spend a howling night afloat after nineteen blissful days on the lake. Our reward was a spectacular mexican food dinner in Page.

A couple of comments on items that were tried for the first time on this summer:

WAECO/DOMETIC 50QT FREEZER. We left both 50QT Igloo cooler's at home and decided to try the Dometic freezer. It was GREAT. We never had to buy ice while on the lake, and REALLY added to the menu choices by permitting us to take a lot of frozen items ((salmon, steak, chicken, vege's, etc). It uses 12/110V power, so it did require us to occasionally run the outboard for a while to bump the batteries a bit. It seemed best when we were in a daily-cruising mode. ...and the insulated cover (I called it a "topcoat") seems to help quite a lot.

To supplement the limited non-freezer area in the Dometic, we used a small Igloo for cooler items. We took four of the "blue ice" cubes, and by freezing/refreezing them in the Dometic, we could use two in the small cooler, while re-freezing the remaining two in the freezer. We put about 2" of water in the bottom of the small cooler and it would be chilled by the blue ice, and kept things at a nice cool temp. (It was still seemed a good idea to use a wet towel atop the Igloo and Dometic ....)

MAGMA A10 TRAILMATE GRILL. This small (8" x 12" grilling surface) is just GREAT! We used it almost every night. It seems very economical on the 1# propane bottles (we used one, for the whole trip), and aside from (me) breaking the plastic control knob on Day 17, it worked fine.

COLEMAN PROPANE BURNER. This was an impulse-purchase at the Page Walmart, and we used it virtually every morning for coffee, omlette's etc. In fact, I think we only started the Wallas once on this trip (just to see if it still worked ... it did, but it really heats-up the cabin). The only problem is that I need to devise a more stable way of setting it in the sink ... it's too tippy there, and sitting it on the counter, it's too high.

All-in-all, these three items have become a regular part of our "cruising inventory" of 'stuff.

Best,
Casey&Mary

Sorry we missed you two! We are in the Wahweap Marina, heading out this morning. We can't see the ramp from where we are in the marina, so never would have seen you.

Glad you both had a good time here... sure will be a proposal to remember! Now that I think about it, I don't even remember how Joan asked me.

We've been thinking about an aux freezer and will check into that Dometic.

Safe travels and happy wedding planning.

Best wishes,
Jim & Joan

Hello All,

We loaded up the Allyson Marie at the Wahweap ramp Tuesday morning after spending a week. I'm sorry we didn't run into more C-Brats on the lake. Just like a rain dance, It's all in the timing.
We did run into Dave and Donna on Patriot at the ramp and bumped into Les
Lampmen in his Marinaut and had a good visit. We have been boating at Lake Powell since 1980 and normally It's quite a bit cooler by this time of the year,
but maybe because we're getting older we just can't tolerate the heat (90 deg)
like we used to. We got home yesterday afternoon just in time. It went below
freezing last night.

Kathy and I were remarking how Lake Powell has changed since we started going there. I realize everything changes over time, but..... Specifically, The truck and trailer parking is insane being located further and further from the ramps, whether it be State Line or Wahweap Ramp. At 65 it's a bear to hoof it all the way up the
ramp and then another 1/4 mile to the trailer parking. It sure used to be nice
to park ON the north side of the ramp for at least 26+ years.
It appears that the entire operation seems to cater to the tour bus crowds and
the Houseboat rental thing with what appears to minimal instruction. As most of you know that have been there, you really have to keep your eyes peeled (as in VFR for those of you that fly) for the weekend rental folks going through the cut or any of the close quarters areas, "No Wake, What's that?"if you catch my drift. While tooling along at 14 kts,in open water we were passed by a ski boat full of kids within 25 ft with NO warning on the starboard side which shakes you up to say the least. I felt like going after them until I realized that I wasn't in my SeaRay any more. Oh Well! Maybe I'm getting too old for this. Enough Ranting!

On a technical note: Our heavily-loaded 22 w/Honda 90 EFI was a dog with the
standard 3-blade 15" pitch but when I changed to my 4-blade 13" pitch it
really performed well. In addition, the Floscan fuel flow meter showed a significant
drop in fuel consumption. As a side note, when I talked to Les, he had the same
results by changing from a 15 to a 13 on his E-Tec.

It would be interesting to hear any stories on the major blow we had on Monday
night 9/24. It was certainly interesting at the marina, especially the spots of red
dirt all over the boat after I spent Monday afternoon cleaning off the road grime.

I'm sure more than the three who posted their's were taking photos during this gathering. Come on let's post them up for all to see.

I know many have made more of these Lake Powell Gatherings then me, though this year was number four for the Hunkydory. They all have been fantastic with each one leaving a continuing desire to return again if at all possible. I'm now hoping many will consider both a spring & fall gathering or one or the other next year.

Hi Jay and Everyone,

We have some excellent pics, but we are still on the road and have limited internet access. We'll be home in about a week and I'll get them out then. We've been cruising on land to the GC north rim and thru AR and NM. Carlsbad NM tonight. We got in a day and night on the water on Apache Lake in AZ. Very beautiful, we'll post them in our album.
We had a wonderful time at the gathering meeting you all. Lake Powell was an amazing experience for a flatland boy from Indiana!
We'll be in touch.

Still repairing the RV-haven't even started on the boat! (Hail storm, awning damage, back TV frame torn up on the various roads en-route!)

I'll get some photos compressed and on the album in the next couple of days.

We are finally home after a wonderful trip, 5500+ miles in all. I have posted some pics to the album, many are of the wonderful people we met at the gathering. We hope to see you all again.

As the first snow falls here for the season in the Madison, Wi area I"m already thinking about next summer's boating. When is the Lake Powell event usually held? Anything on the calendar yet for next year? Colby
