Steve,

On an iPad 3g or 4g there is no reason for a cell contract. The iPad uses it's internal GPS and is independent.

On the recently completed Catalina cruise we used the iPad running the Navionics App. It's for us much easier to use than the Raymarine C80 and has more useful information. The C80 was on, but only used for depth/sonar.

We left "Thisaway" at Big Water Storage today, and when headed back to Kanab (where we parked the RV)we saw a 25? C Dory headed to Powell.

Hot, (about 105 at Big Water). But a number of heavy rain showers cooled off Kanab.

Steve we have the 3 G i Pad wich has a built in GPS. We have used the I pad in the Gulf Of Mexico, The delta Cruise, the San Juans, Powell and Catalina. As Brent says, a great navigational tool. We do also use our two Garmin Plotters. One has AIS on the screen, and the other spits with the sounder.
 
Two little iPhone/iPad points to add to some of the recent posts in case it matters for people's planning:

One is that I've used my AT&T iPhone in the mid-lake area with a view of Navajo mountain, so AT&T does work there.

The other is that an iPad doesn't need to have the 3G contract activated for the GPS to work, but you do have to have the iPad with the 3G option installed or it won't have the GPS built in. That's my understanding direct from Apple. A person contemplating an iPad purchase for navigation should be sure to ask and not end up with a model not suitable.

I'm pretty sure I can attend this year, and I'm on the event sign up list. I saw 22, not 27 boats there, however. That's a big number for some of the beaches and anchorages. Another adventure....

It may have been me that you saw passing through Kanab.

I was trailering from Anacortes, headed for Page (for some engine service). I was through Kanab about 4PM as I recall, and spent the night in the Walmart parking lot in Page, prior to my appt at Page Honda Friday morning.

Earlier that day I received a call from Dixie as I was heading down I-15 toward the Cove Fort cutoff. Bentenson's were headed North and Brent said "...I think that's Casey!" Dixie called, and we chatted for a bit.

You can run; but with a C-Dory (...or C-Dory 'like boat) You Can't Hide!

How much is a non-resident Utah fishing license for 1, 3 or? days?

(For Chris) Typically how many miles total do you go for the 'standard' tour? Do you also go at non-planing speeds for most of the week? I'd like to align ourselves to your time frame, it works best for us.

Steve...in round figures I usually go up lake 100 miles...with about 100 miles of side trips...and 100 miles back down lake. The week usually comes in somewhere between 300-400 miles. Our usual most distant canyon is at mile 106...with marinas at mile 40 and 95.
While in the canyons we usually are moving slowly...non-planing...but will bring it up to 15-18 mph for the transits...especially in the main channel. Conditions sometimes will cause us to slow down even on the transits. As you know I run light and my big Yami 75 has a tendency to push my boat pretty fast if I don't keep all those ponies under control. With a big group of diverse boats...the comfort zone varies quite a bit...but it all seems to work out.
Don't know about the fishing stuff...Brent or Jody should be along soon to answer that one.

I believe that an annual out of state for Utah ran $75 in 2010. Given state economies, it may have gone up by then. If you're on the water for more than a couple of weeks, and you like to fish a lot, it seemed that it made sense to get the annual. I believe that you can purchase on line.

Thanks Chris, that's much farther than I expected, glad I asked. I plan to tow with the tank nearly empty then fill up in Page, AZ. Then at least one more time at a marina.

And thanks Steve for the fishing license price and link. I see that it's $32 for a 7-day non-res, probably what I'll do. All on-line, no snail mail.
 
Sorry to have missed Casey!

We got an e mail annual Utah license. Earlier none of the marinas or shops could issue a license- that may have been resolved by now.
 
I buy the Utah fishing license at the Walmart in Page or there's also at a tackle store downtown I think. The license "start" date can be after the purchase date, so you can buy it and have it "active" during the stretch of days you're most interested in.

I guess buying it online would give the same options.

The tackle store referred to is probably Styx. It's on Lake Powell Blvd. Its a good place to get tackle and learn the latest hot spots and techniques.
 
Earlier this year Walmart or the sporting goods store could sell licenses because of computer issues.
 
We have purchased a Verizon phone because of lack of reception of the AT&T i Phone in Glacier Nat. Park. (We did get reception on A T & T only when we could see the power plant towers, in the lake, but not in other areas where we could see Navajo MT. This should work when in view of Navajo mountain, and If anyone wants the phone number to contact while we are on the Lake from 13 Sept until the gathering; please PM me.
 
Sounds like fishing is getting good at Powell now. Hopefully it will hang around till the end of September.
 
I was at lake Powell in May and stopped in at Styx and bought a license. I asked if the license was good for all of the lake and was told it was. First day fishing we were stopped by UT rangers. I thought I was good to go but they told us we only had a AZ license.

I know, I should have done my homework, not been in a hurry, looked at the license. I knew we would be fishing in Utah.

I feel the employee selling the license should have told me I needed a Utah license since I told him we were going up lake and I asked if the license was good for the whole lake.

A friend had been in the store an hour before me and got the same license and we were both in the boat when stopped. They let us off with a warning but we could not fish until we got a Utah license and we wasted the $$.

I will go to Walmart next time.

Buy it online from Utah DWR and print out the copy. They will send you an official license within a week. Just do it now so there's time to receive the license before you leave home. You could probably get by with the self printed copy.
 
I forgot to mention that there is a phone number where you can buy a Utah license. They will let you fish before you receive a license if you have the number they give you to show you have paid for it.

The rangers told us about it and that is what we did.

Change of plans....

Carole and I will not be at Lake Powell. I'll explain in a moment. But first I want to thank all of you for your input as to planning.

Okay here's the why of our absence. Carole and I live on a very steep lot and have been looking for a replacement home for sometime. We are both looking at 70, so the flat lot home is a priority. As such we found a listing which fits our needs. With the buy/sell process starting all of you now understand the why.

Well it's looking good, for those into probability, about 80% good to go. Some work issues occur 1 week before leaving, if not handled by trip time, boss says will have to cancel or delay.

Chris, I plan on leaving Thurs 9/20 and stay over in Vegas. But I don't think I'll make it to Wahweap by noon Friday, more like 2-3pm. Do you know which cove you're planning to stay in Friday night? I'd like to meet up with you.
 
Steve...can't really say where we will be at this point. PM me your cell number and I will call you Friday when I know. Glad it looks like you will finally make this trip...I know you have really wanted to do this for some time.
