09/15 - Lake Powell September Cruise

Well I think I've finally got my act together and will be leaving Reno on the 18th for Lake Powell and Wahweep. I was wondering if Antelope Point Marina might be a bit closer to Oak Canyon? I don't expect to launch until late on the 19th or early on the 20th and 51 miles is a long day for a 21EC. Any other suggestions or advise on finding the C-Brat group would be helpful as I may not get to that part of the lake until the 21st. Thanks in advance and I'm really looking forward to meeting some of you.

I don't do much in the south end, because I launch at Bullfrog. Since the Castle Rock Cut is open to traffic, it's probably about even on getting up lake from the south end when it comes to Antelope or Wahweap. I've heard from others that since CRC is open, there is much less traffic coming up the Maytag Straights from Antelope, so it isn't so bad. If it's closer for you to go to one or the other, pick the closer one is what I'd probably do.

When CRC closes after water goes down, which won't be for many more months, Antelope would be the closest by far. Hope that helps.
 
I haven't seen any messages from Chris (Rana Verde) for a lonnnng time. How is he doing?

From Antelope Point about 4.2 miles. From Wahweap 5.2 miles. This is just to the main channel. Antelope sees a lot less traffic. If you don't want to deal with a lot of people go there. You can go look at the ramp webcams and see for yourself.
 
when you guys are finished playing around and having all kinds of fun, please post pictures so the rest of us poor, hard at work people, can, if for just a moment, enjoy what we have missed.

We pulled the boat at noon today at Wahweap. Did six days of the cruise and had a wonderful time. This was the first cruise my wife had done with me other than a few overnighters. We are already thinking about a repeat next September. We took a ton of pictures but the free WiFi here can't deal with the pictures. I will post some when we return home.

I keep seeing C-Dory ads posted here and wishing I was ready to become a C-Dory owner, but I have to sell the above houseboat first. Such is life...
 
Great trip thanks to everyone for such a good time. One could spend many years on this lake exploring the canyons and sites. I think i'll have to go again and again. Posted some pics in the album.
 
We are back home in Fall City! This was probably our best cruise and vacation ever. Thanks to Chris for organizing it, and Bill for the on-going information on the geology of Lake Powell.

The landscape in the Southwest in general and Lake Powell in particular is eerie, surreal, alien to us Upper Left Coasters. The weather was perfect, endless sunny days and blue skies, warm water for swimming, magnificent scenery all around, wonderful evenings with friends old and new.

Chris made sure we saw all the usual highlights - Rainbow Bridge, Cathedral of the Desert and Defiance House - but also got a great sampling of different canyons. Lake Powell is ALL about the canyons!

The Stan Jones map is essential, as is a GPS with Lake Powell cartography. Powell is a lake because it is behind a dam, but it was first a river, with a defined channel, and woe to those who stray too far from the original channel, since the lake covers up pinnacles or spires that could be just a few feet below the surface. So we stuck (mostly) to the defined channel while traveling. We covered a total of 360 miles on the lake, and burned 107 gallons of gas.

The Honda BF150 was seriously affected by the altitude, so a lot of cruising was at about 7 knots (which we prefer anyway) and some at more like 12 knots, which was about the best we could muster, and seemed to be the preferred speed for the CD22s which were much less affected by the altitude.

For those who have not cruised Lake Powell, this is an absolute "must do" destination. We will be returning for sure.

We had a great time, but Baxter had a FABULOUS time, it was about the only time in his entire life when he has been able to be off-leash virtually all of the time. He is now known as "Baxter Barrett Anderson, Dog of the Desert"!

Pat, I don't feel badly that my Honda 130 couldn't get on a plane until we burned off some gas last year!
 
At 5 PM Saturday while headed back to Las Vegas from Orange County on I 15 about midway between Barstow and Baker I spotted a southbound C Dory -- boat hauler had a kayak on the roof.

Betcha they were headed home from Lake Powell gathering -- if not bet they had fun wherever they were.

Sorry you couldn't make it, Bob - it was terrific. Chris said in his experience over the years ALL CD25s had more or less the same problem on Lake Powell. I don't know why we would be so much more affected than the CD22s except that we are a lot heavier.

OK, until there is an album for Lake Powell 2008 in Cruises and Events, my pix of Lake Powell are here. They are not in chronological order, that may await another day. In looking at them, I am sorry I did not take more pix of people around our nightly campfires, that was really the highlight. And on the subject of campfires, thanks to Ken and Jane on Cavu for not one but three awesome nights of sharing Ken's smoked salmon!
 
One last post on this for now. A HUGE thanks to our fearless leader Chris on Rana Verde. Without him, we would not really have known where to start, and probably run aground as well...

I gotta tell ya, Pat, that picture of Baxter is priceless. It looks like he's clearly saying " Touch me and I'll rip your head off and stuff it down your throat."

After that trip (which I truly envied) he's probably gonna be leash shy for a while....
