09/15 - Lake Powell September Cruise

Pat sound like a very ambitious week anyway have a Great trip wish We could be there . We are having a crappy summer waiting out these Hurricanes and storms here in Fl.Haven't been out in my boat for 2 weeks
Anyway what kind of Restorer did you use for Oxidation (Gelcoat) .Hopefully see all you Guys in Seattle this jan.

Pat,

I mentioned some time back that I'd check on the ham repeater on Navajo Mtn. I heard from Wayne (W7WAC), the trustee, and he told me that they have a trip planned to go to the repeater site on Navajo Mtn this weekend (Sept 12th) where they hope to add a link radio to the repeater that will tie it into a system of other linked repeaters with the Utah VHF Society. I don't know if it will be full time or how it will pan out, but you may find that there may be wider coverage and more traffic on the repeater than has been seen in the past.

Hopefully I'll find the C-Dory group eventually, but I won't make it to Oak Canyon by the 20th. I'm going to a large fishing rally at Stanton Creek, just uplake from Bullfrog on the 19th, 20th, and head south on the 21st. We'll probably take a few days to get up the San Juan somewhere, but I'll listen for you and try calling now and then on the repeater. Hope we can hook up and see some C-Dorys!

Tony...my plan at this point is to be up the Escalante on the 21st...probably overnight in Fiftymile...then up the main channel again the 22nd. Probably in Iceberg the next night. Should be able to hook up about the time you are headed down. Hope this helps you find us.

Tony
I will be at Bullfrog and Stanton on the 19th and then head for Oak on Saturday morning. See you at the Shad Rally on Friday, but I'll miss the fish fry.

We are on the way-got a late start from Spokane this morning. We are settled in for the night in Baker City, Or. We still plan to launch on the 15th at Wahweap.

Jody,

I hope I manage to get on the lake on Friday in time to find you. I expect to be at Stanton by mid-afternoon, but you never know. I have a bunch of work to do on my boat before I launch. Look forward to seeing you.

TF

P.S. Did you get your ham license yet?

Tony
I will drive to Wellington on Thursday night and then to Bullfrog Friday morning. Should be at the ramp about 10 to 11 on the water by 12 noon. I will stay in Stanton on Friday Night will monitor 16 and 68 VHF. Boats name Voyager.

Ken,

Wish we had known that you were stopping in Baker City, you could have stayed with us. We live about 10 miles NW of the city and have lots of parking space. Maybe another time.

We will be leaving on the 16th and be putting in on the evening of the 17th. Any other C-Brats coming in around that time? Also, is there a set time for meeting Chris on the 18th.?

This Brat is departing Tahoe Calif. on the Monday the 15th. Driving Nev. HWY 50 to Utah HWY 70 and down to Bullfrog. Planning to launch on the 17th sometime and heading up lake to explore. Heading down towards Oak Canyon on the 19th to hook up with the others and Chris sometime on the 20th. Hanging with the group until they arrive up at Bullfrog around the 22nd and pulling out to head home.
Hope to catch you somewhere along the way.

We are in the Wahweap Campground at Powell. Arrived last night after a long and (thankfully) uneventful trip down from Flaming Gorge. There were thunderstorms with strong associated winds all along the route, but somehow our route seemed to miss them all. For those coming down I-15 through Utah, we recommend the Cracker Barrel stop in Springville, just south of Provo, for brfst, lunch, or dinner -- big parking lot for truck and boat, good meal, easy on-off the freeway. We also suggest staying on the Interstate to just below Beaver (good fuel stop there at the truck stop) and then take the 20 over the mountains to 89. Then south to Kanab, east on 89 from there along the southern edge of the Vermillion Cliffs to Powell. You'll see a sign for Wahweap Marina, turn to port there. At the entrance, you can get the less-expensive 7-day permit (even if staying on the lake longer) -- just don't take the boat out of the Rec Area after the 7-day and return -- if you need to do that, get the annual. Ranger told us we could stay months on the 7-day if we simply don't leave. Down the hill from the entrance station there is a stop. Go straight to go to the launch ramp, marina, restaurant, truck parking, etc. Go left to the campground. You'll see the sign where to enter. Register at the store. Electricity and water available if you wish. Geezer Pass (Golden Age) saves half price, both for boat permit and camping. We will be launching this afternoon (or tomorrow) after re-supply at Page. Call us on VHF 72 if we're around we will answer. Looking forward to arrival of trip leader Chris and all. Or P.M. us and we'll send cell phone number. (Good cell at camp and good internet (ATT). Safe driving.

The Grand Slam of Western Lakes tour was wonderful. A month on Lake Yellowstone ( http://www.geocities.com/bill_fiero/yellowst.htm ), then Jackson Lake at the base of the Tetons, and Flaming Gorge. And now Powell - Wow!

See you folks soon.

El and Bill, WOW! What a fantastic write-up. Thank you for taking the time and energy to put together such a great chapter in Cruising America. Very informative and a joy to read. A+

El and Bill,

Thanks for the fabulous write-up on your latest cruise and also for the information for those traveling down I-15. We will be stopping for the night at Lakeside RV and campground just south of Provo, and I believe it is the same exit as the Cracker Barrel you recommended. If so we will have dinner there and also breakfeast the next morning. Should be arriving at Wahweap around 2 PM on the 17th and will try to contact any C-Brats in the area.

Chris,

We will be arriving Wahweap on the 17th and joining you on the 18th at whatever time suits you. Can you or any other C-Brats recommend a place nearby to anchor and overnite? Maybe we can join others on the water at that time.

So, Chris - if there is a plan, maybe you could post and let us all in on it!

When I want to anchor out in the vicinity of Wahweap I usually head for Lone Rock Canyon...just north of Wahweap. With the shortcut at Castle Rock open this year it would be easy to use Warm Creek Bay also.

Why don't we say we will leave Wahweap around noon on the 18th? If that works for everyone...gather at the store on the docks in the marina...just south of the ramp...there are spaces to tie there next to the store. We will hook up with the group that is already on the lake where ever they might be. Of course the big rendezvous for everyone from all corners will be in Oak Canyon...at about mile 51...on the 20th.

Pat...I don't have much of a plan...with all the different arrival times and launch points...best we can do is shoot for the rendezvous at Oak Canyon on the 20th. After that we can head out as a group if that is what we want to do. But it's all tentative...we may go into Fiftymile and not find a place to stay....and we will be in some other canyon that night. We will have some favorite spots we want to see...and after a group discussion we will decide which we want to visit. The lake will be much different this trip than it has been the last 5-6 years. It looks like it will be about 25 feet higher than of late...which really changes the sand bar/beach configuration/locations. Some of the beaches we have been using lately will be non existant...and new beaches will be accessible. The canyons will be much deeper/longer. It will be much more of an adventure than the typical marina to marina cruise.

Thanks Chris. We will meet you at the store on the dock at noon. Also thanks to all the C-Brats that took time to provide me with information and pictures of Lake Powell. All have been very helpful since this is our first trip on Lake Powell...in fact it is our first extended cruise! Very excited and looking forward to meeting all.
