09/15 - Lake Powell September Cruise

Just shine a flashlight under some rocks at night and count the eyes. I have been boarded by mice and pikas. A paper plate with a hole in the center stops them.

Ken...a frisbee with a slot cut in it so it will slide on the line works great. And yes...the critters will board you at night if your lines are dry.

Checked the Utah online fishing license site, guess I will leave the fishing pole home!

Getting the BF150 serviced on the 4th, and getting the trailer bearings repacked some time before we leave. Wallas is pulled out out, Patty will probably take it in to Scan Marine today but no big deal if it is not fixed in time. We have the Coleman Fold-n-Go for cooking and Mr Heater Buddy to take any chill off the cabin. Windlass I will pull and look at next weekend - will check all the electrical connections, if cannot make 'er go, again, probably no big deal. Need to get that fixed for NW cruising for sure though.

So Chris, if you are there two weeks, you anticipate traveling 600 - 800 miles? With the price of fuel, we may have a bit more modest expectations! Or maybe do more side trips up canyons in the dinghy with the little 2 hp Merc! Wow, 800 miles, that would be a lot of gas even with the more economical CD22! And take more time than we have at 6 knots!

Well...I just looked in my logs at the last 5 or 6 trips and they were all between 300 and 400 miles. It's a big lake...and the shoreline is a bit convoluted...thousands of miles. Lots of exploring. All depends on what you want to do. Could go there and not travel 20 miles. Or you could try to get into every nook and cranny and travel thousands.
There are certain high points...sights to see. I like to hit those and then wander around between them. Especially with folks that have never been there before.

Hi Ken and Jody,

No, Molly is not for rent - you have to get your own sweet kitty. Many of you think Molly has a life of leisure... and you'd be right. But before Molly adopted us, she was pretty much on her own. Oh, she had a home, but wasn't allowed in it (she lived in their garage) and came and went as she pleased. That's how she found us. She didn't need food (she overate from a gravity feeder), she wanted attention. I can't say she's ever seen a mouse... but neither have we since Molly has been a part of our family. :D I know these wonderful furry family members have a hunting instinct... we've seen it with Molly when she goes after the geckos and grasshoppers. She wants to chase rabbits and birds... well, she has a time or two but they're a lot faster.

I highly recommend you look into being a cat-daddy or mommy... and not just for keeping mice off the boat. Great travel companions, easy to care for, lovey... and great stress reducers... something about a snuggly purring cat that makes each day even better.

To get back on topic, Lake Powell is such an amazing place - circumstances prevent us from joining you on this cruise, but we'll be back there again!

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Oh, and Molly likes dogs... she said if she ever decided to get a pet, she'd consider one. :wink

OK, this is not a flame and maybe we should take it to That's Life, but I vote for DOGS over CATS on a boat...Will have to introduce Baxter to Molly the next opportunity we have. I cannot IMAGINE a cat litter box on board (and we do have a cat at home)! Baxter has to be taken to shore, but he would rather explode than do it on the boat!

OK, I wasn't going to bring this up, but what the heck is Patty doing to that poor little Baxter in this photo???

Gulf_Islands_001.jpg

Is she "stringing him up" 'cause he couldn't hold it any longer??? Oh, the humanity... um, dogmanity? :cry

Molly says her poop doesn't stink. Um, she'd be wrong... but we do keep her box in the compartment under the co-pilot seat and the litter does a good job with the smell. I wonder if they make a kitty-litter-air-head?

Molly doesn't potty outside... doesn't explode, either.

Molly also said, "That Baxter is cute. I'll bet he sits up and begs on command, too." Then she chuckled. Interesting... you don't often hear cats chuckle.

Pat-

There's another opportunity to use and demonstrate the superiority of the Airhead composting toilet!

Make Baxter a flat plywood panel covered with artificial turf and a hole in the middle and put it smack dab on top of the Airhead! Viola!

Come to think of it, it might just work for cats to, except you'd have to carry along some sand to seed the area around the hole with!

Joe. :teeth :thup

My only problem then, would be Eli walks when she goes. Maybe it could be a little mini escalator with a hole at the bottom.

Yesterday we pulled Daydream out of Hilton Harbor in Bellingham and said "See you next year" to Curt, who runs the place. Great place, we will want to get her back in there much earlier next year.

Back at Birch Bay, the boat is in driveway. Now to get ready for the Powell trip!

We hit the brow with some color restorer, since she has been outside for three years, and was quite oxidized. This stuff has apparently worked miracles, after a coat of wax (several more coats today), it looks just like new again. We are going to wash the boat and Patty is going to wax her - we have a little Coleman buffer that is really slick, used it on the brow and don't think I could have done it at all without the buffer. I think we just have to get a cover for UV protection of the gelcoat though.

Today and tomorrow are my days to do a lot of stuff - get the Wallas back in, trace the power to the windlass and see if we can get it working again (assuming the gears are not all gone inside), install a 12 volt socket in the cockpit and troubleshoot one in the cabin, and other little stuff.

Patty is staying up here to take the boat in to West Coast Marine in Bellingham on Thursday to have the BF150's 400 hour service , and will then be towing her back to Fall City.

We've got a list going, and hopefully will be ready. Going to look at stuff to take OFF the boat as well as stuff to put on!

We'll be getting the trailer bearings repacked (and new lug nuts with anti-sieze compound!), and an oil change for the Titan, for the 2,400 mile round trip.

Counting down the days - for me, nine more work days to departure!

Reading Pat's recent note, decided I would check in here. I left Oakland and the Outboard Motor Shop where I purchased Blue Bayou on Friday at 10:30am, and was able to ride the crest of the wave of Labor Day weekend traffic all the way out of California, up Interstate 80 over the Sierras---not one traffic jam.
Camped in the boat at Rye Patch Dam just East of Lovelock, Nevada the first night.
Sunday morning finds me in Salt Lake City, hoping to make it to Flaming Gorge Resevoir this evening. The Grand Slam of Western Lakes pod is leaving Yellowstone Lake on September 2, and I will meet them later this week at Flaming Gorge.
From there, this smaller pod will meet you-all at Lake Powell in mid-September. We are gathering from all corners of the country, for the fabulous annual Lake Powell Cruise. Looking forward to meeting you all in person.

After a hectic weekend Sue and I decided we just can not make that drive.... we have had a short summer with not much accomplished...so we are going to stay at home and try to catch up before the snow....
YouAll have a great time.... we'll sure miss seeing everyone...

Back up to the top! It will be close but things are coming together!

West Coast Marine discovered a nick out of the gears in the Honda BF150, so Daydream is still in Bellingham, should be ready Thursday for Patty to go up and retrieve. Otherwise all serviced and ready to go. Hope this is a warranty repair...

The windlass is in at The Offshore Store, a new motor is on order for the Sprint 600, should be done by Friday and ready to pick up. It is actually a V700 motor, which the service tech just discovered will fit the Sprint 600.

Les Schwab is repacking the trailer bearings and checking the brakes Friday morning.

So the plan is that the boat is all packed and ready to roll Thursday evening, Patty takes it to Les Schwab Friday morning, runs in and picks up the windlass in Seattle, we go back to Les Schwab when I get home from work and take off directly from there.

Aim to make Yakima Friday night, Camp Walmart or whatever. Saturday to Mountain Home, ID. Sunday to Brent and Dixie's in Richfield, UT. Monday roll in to Page, head for the Safeway, and then on to Wahweap, to be in the water by some unknown time after noon, hopefully well before dark!
