05/18 - 05/20 - 2012 Friday Harbor CBGT

We've made a last minute decision to skip this year. Our boat is in the water right next to the Ballard locks, and we're so busy this week that we don't think we'll be able to get the boat back on a trailer, do our first long distance tow, our first sound crossing, etc. We're both working, and we're trying to get all our stuff out of our cabin so we can rent it next month. So instead we're going to an overnight trip with our dog, leaving through the locks, maybe head to Kingston or something. We'll be able to get some practice in the sound (of course, more protected than the San Juans), get more practice with the radar, etc.

Have fun out there, and maybe we'll be able to get to La Conner.

PS - Any recommendations for marinas to stay at within 2 hours of Seattle? Preferably ones with bathrooms/showers, and close to restaurants.

C-Dawg's crew (Shirl-girl and Rick) will be mooring in Oak Harbor Thursday night, and then headed to Friday Harbor via Deception Pass Friday morning. Saturday morning we are headed to Sidney, BC, to visit Butchart Gardens.

Anyone that would like to meet in any of those locations is more than welcomed.

We found non-ethanol gas at West Sound close to Deer Harbor but none at Friday Harbor last week. This is just meant to inform everyone and I'm not telling anyone what to do, but after what we went through with ethanol gas I'm not using the stuff. We are at Ganges right now and maybe Sidney is on our list before heading down to the greatest small boat bunch in the world. See you soon. Roger and Cheryl

We plan to launch at Sidney on Tuesday and overnight at the marine park. Roche on Wednesday for an overnight then make our way south perhaps blind bay or Friday Harbor. Will keep VHF on 68 for anyone nearby. George

We are not going to make it to Friday Hbr again this year. We are just not ready to leave the dock for our summer cruise. We had wanted to see everybody as we also missed the Seattle Boat Show Gathering.

If you see the Jacari Maru in BC this summer, stop by for a coffee, or just wave as you fly by!

Roger, I think there is non-ethanol gas to be had at Friday Harbor. IIRC, there is a station by the saw shop that has it. I can track it down for you if interested.

c-dawg. Are you going to anchor out behind the gardens?
Nah, we're planning on staying in Sidney and taking a bus over to the gardens. But, plans have a way of changing. ;-)

Thisaway is in Sequim and looking over the Straits they are kicking up. The forcast for the next couple of days seem to suggest that we may be riding the ferry from Port Townsend on Friday, Although Sunday is better, of course the truck and trailer will be up at Deception--so a ferry ride home may be in order.

We are part of the advance crew for Friday Harbor - just got here this morning. Didn't stay long though, since we had to catch the ferry back to Anacortes to get our truck. The trip over on Wild Blue this morning was pretty smooth - Rosario was nearly calm, a bit lumpy east of Lopez Island. Getting settled in and looking forward to seeing everyone for the gathering!

Best wishes,
Jim & Joan

Has the group arranged with the harbor master for a common location on their dock? If so, where is it?

Intend to be there Saturday morning.

Here is a repost of the important info.

OK, Here's the detail on the FH gathering: We have 45 slips reserved. We have all of "H" Dock and at least half of "G" dock. To get to those docks approach the marina, find the customs station about dead ahead and then look to the right, you will see a small kiosk on the end of a breakwater with a sign giving 66 as their operating VHF frequency. Enter the protected area there leaving the kiosk to your starboard and look to the right. You will see "H" dock. The kiosk is on breakwater "A". As you approach please contact the harbormaster's office on VHF 66, just tell them you are with the C-Dory group. They will not assign a specific slip. Take any open slip on "H" dock. After "H" is full new arrivals head in the same direction but pick a close in slip on the right side of "G" dock as you are heading in. There will be other Brats there to help you. As usual the Port of Friday harbor is very glad to have us there; normal moorage is 95 cents per foot, they charge us only 70 cents per foot. Once you are moored please walk up to the Harbormaster's office to register and pay for moorage, other brats will give you directions. Each slip has 30A power and potable water. There is an extra cost for shore power. C-Cakes will be moored somewhere near the middle of "H" dock. We have a dinner planned for Friday evening at "Downriggers" a nice restaurant within easy walking distance of the marina. It is up to you whether you join us for dinner. There are several nice restaurants within walking distance, Downriggers is the only one able to handle a group our size. No one will fault you if you choose another option.
There are several good breakfast options, all within walking distance, folks just decide what they want to do, there is no organized breakfast or lunch on Saturday. The Friday Harbor West Marine store hosts us for coffee and donuts at about 10:00 and they give brats 10% off most stuff. Some people head out to fish, others cruise the general area, others walk around Friday Harbor, there is a farmer's market, an interesting Whale Museum, and a very nice local bookstore. You can also rent a car, scooter or two person scooter to tour San Juan Island. English and American Camps are worth a visit. You can also get to Roche harbor by auto/scooter. Many of us just hang around and gossip. David McKibben on Anna Leigh and I will be doing Coast Guard vessel safety checks throughout the weekend, just find us if you want a VSC. Saturday is a good day to look over everybody's boat and to steal their good modification ideas. The potluck will begin about 5:30ish on Saturday and will be on breakwater "A" at the end of "H" dock. There is no power on the breakwater but food is usually devoured before it has a chance to get cold. It is a true potluck, no assigned dishes, after the potluck we usually have boat christenings courtesy of rev Jim or Asst Rev. Dave. If you would like your boat christened, (A good idea, Neptune gets picky), bring some greenery from your home area and libation of your choice then watch while your friends pour all kinds of stuff over the bow of your baby  Most people plan to arrive noonish on Friday and depart by noonish on Sunday. There are always impromptu flotillas heading out to any of several great cruising areas, just ask around and don't be shy

Ferret30

Two hours out of Seattle, Brownsville, nice facility but I don't remember the showers. As to being more protected than the islands -- maybe not so much. Crossing the Strait of Juan -- carefully.

Looks like I may have to work Sunday, so It might be a quick over and back if the weather is a guarantee. Can not afford to not be back by Sat Night. Barry, do your thing.

I plan on attending this on Friday to take a look at some boats and meet some owners to help me decide what options to get on the 22 Cruiser I will soon be buying. There is a ferry that arrives in Friday Harbor at 10:35AM and the next one after that would arrive in Friday Harbor at 3:45PM. Which one should I shoot for? Thanks!

Dene,

I'd advise you arrive as early as you can on Friday if you want to look at some boats and talk to skippers. Most of us will be heading to dinner about 4:30-ish.

Larry,

That map is all fine and good for some, but without highlighting the location of a brewpub, it's pretty worthless to me. :teeth :beer

Lori has gone to Salt Lake and I don't have the boat in the water yet due to house projects. I was hoping to take the ferry over for a quick visit on Friday evening but the ferry schedule and the dinner schedule don't mesh too well so just know I'll be thinking of you guys Friday evening! Hope to see some of you at LaConner.

Warren
