    Helm Wheel Clearance Solutions

One drawback to our C-Dorys is that there is not a lot of space at the helm. If you modify the seat, you are likely to run into leg clearance problems. One solution is a tilt helm hub ($$$$$) which also compounds the problem as it extends out further. A second solution is shims or wedges to...

    Just an opinion...

Jim -- Thanks for starting this thread. The C-Dory is a great boat but can be made greater. There is certainly room for the new factory owners to improve the boat and no matter how expensive the boat, there is always room for the owners to improve them as well. Absent a full custom build, a...

    S1000 Data Cable

Just checked the cable pins and sockets for continuity. There are 9 wires in the cable and no changing of pin assignments. It is a true "serial extension cable" and does nothing more or less. I got it at Staples. It is 6 ft long, made by Belkin and is called a "Serial Extension Cable" on the...

    battery weight

The best way to figure things out is to go to the web site for the battery manufacturer and do a careful comparison of the specs. www.optimabatteries.com. Lifeline is another brand of AGM battery. I have used Lifelines for years on several boats as well as Optimas which I use as my starting...

    S1000 Data Cable

I just came in off of working on the boat but in the morning, I will check the continuity pin to pin of the cable I got from Staples which purports to be an extension cable. Presuming it checks out, I will post the part number and then there will be at least one cable that we know is simply an...

    S1000 Data Cable

Peter -- I think it is even simpler than thinking about color coding. If it is a 9 pin with a male connector at one end and a female connector at the other end, it is simply an extension cord. It picks up whatever pin is on the S1000 computer and carries it along without changing pin...

Thanks for posting the pics. Nice reach to that davit. Jim

    S1000 Data Cable

I wrote RayMarine and asked whether they sold a longer data cable or whether the cable could be extended with a serial cable. They wrote back less than 24 hours later and indicated that they did not sell a longer cable but that the cable could be extended. Problem solved! Jim

    Garhauer Davit setup questions

John -- Thanks for the fast response. The tank was giving me issues as well with a motor well mount. My thought was to put the base as close as possible to the vertical side of the motor well which is the starboard lazarette and a bit aft in the motor well. I have been thinking about...

    Garhauer Davit setup questions

John (of Swee Pee) -- You have the Garhauer davit mounted on the floor boards and mention the possibility of cutting a wedge and adding another mount in the motor well. If you were only going to have a single mount to move a dinghy engine from the dinghy onto a transom mount on the C-Dory...

    S1000 Data Cable

I am installing an S1000 autopilot and want to put the computer underneath the galley along with the drive motor. The supplied data cable is not long enough to reach the area behind the helm. Am I correct in thinking that the data cable can simply be extended with a 9 pin serial extension...

    Anchor Light Problem

Just returned from Radio Shack with a 3A diode (Part No. 276-1141) and wired it across the two switches with the ring on the diode on the anchor light switch. Voila, it all works properly. I spent $1.58 at Radio Shack for a package of 2 diodes with tax which sets a record for the least cost...

    Anchor Light Problem

Steve -- Thanks but the original is gone. I just went out and measured the amp draw when using the anchor light and the two nav lights. They are all LEDs and the draw is 0.06A so I suspect that a 1 AMP diode will do but RadioShack also sells a 3A diode. Jim

    Anchor Light Problem

I am rewiring my boat and need to get the correct diode that was mentioned in this thread by Art and Roger. I looked at Radio Shack on line and find a number of diodes. I don't know enough to pick the correct one. Does anyone have any guidance? Thanks in advance.

    Aux. Fuel Tanks for Trucks?

Nick -- I understand the concern about having the tank hang down by 3 inches. Wonder if the manufacturer sells an optional skid plate. You might get high centered but you would not rupture the tank to add to your problems and a winch or a high lift jack would get you going again.

    Erie Canal Closed

I suspect that the Erie will be open in a day or so. It was not the sky that was falling but rather a plane. Jun 14th, 2009 | SCOTIA, N.Y. -- A small plane plunged into the Mohawk River in eastern New York with three people aboard Sunday, and at least two were found dead after the aircraft...

    Interior Paint

I have used 1 3/4 qts. I have given 2 coats to the forward and middle cabins including the overhead and inside the galley. I have a little bit left to go -- the back side of the helm, the area by the helmsperson's knees, and the dinette cabinetry. I suspect that by the time I get 2 coats on...

    Interior Paint

I have just finished painting the interior of my CD22 which had lots of stains I could not remove after trying a whole bunch of solvents. I used Interlux Brightside, a 1 part epoxy paint which I have used on other boats with great results. I lightly sanded the Decraguard and applied it over...

    Heavy weather handling

KVOSKA -- I grew up boating on Great South Bay (lived in Bayport and boated from Sailors Haven east with occasional trips out Fire Island Inlet) and know the chop that you are talking about. We get the same chop on LI Sound from the prevailing SW breeze combined with all the wakes. I have had...

    C-Dory Sightings

Proving that you can play this game remotely and sight a West Coast C-Dory from the East Coast, I read the blog for Campbell Maritime, a small towing operation in Seattle which is always interesting and which always has a photo. Today's photo is of Westrac II but right next to it is a CD-16...
